New York Knicks History

The Knicks were established in 1946 and are one of the founding members of the Basketball Association of America, which became the NBA after merging with the National Basketball League in 1949. The Knicks and Boston Celtics are the only two original NBA teams still located in their original cities.

The Knicks saw early success, advancing to the NBA Finals in three consecutive years from 1950 to 1953. They lost all three series, twice to the Minneapolis Lakers and once to the Rochester Royals. The franchise’s next successful era began in the late '60s, under the tutelage of head coach Red Holzman. They won 54 games in Holzman's first full season as head coach in the 1968–69 season, then improved to 60 wins the following year. The Knicks won their first NBA Championship in 1970, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games. Holzman won Coach of the Year, while center Willis Reed won NBA MVP and Finals MVP.

Holzman and Reed led the Knicks back to the finals in two of the next three seasons, facing the Lakers both times. They split those two series, winning their second championship in the 1972–73 season.

The Knicks did not experience success again until the '90s, when future Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing led them back to the NBA Finals in 1993–94 and 1998–99. They lost both series, first in seven games to the Houston Rockets, then in five games to the San Antonio Spurs.

The Knicks traded for star Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets in 2011. He proved to be an elite scorer, but team success eluded the Knicks. They made it to the playoffs three times in Carmelo's seven-year tenure with the team, winning one series in 2013.

The Knicks reached the playoffs once again during the 2020–21 season, reinvigorated by power forward Julius Randle, who was awarded the NBA’s Most Improved Player distinction in 2021, and advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2023 with the additional firepower of newly acquired point guard Jalen Brunson.

New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden

Located above Penn Station, the current Madison Square Garden has been the home to the Knicks since 1968 and is one of the most iconic arenas in all of sports. The Knicks' arena has always been called Madison Square Garden, and they played in the previous iteration from the founding of the franchise in 1946 until moving to the current building in 1968. The current MSG is the oldest NBA arena still in use. Madison Square Garden also has the distinction of being the only NBA arena that is not named after a corporate sponsor.

MSG knows how to run a sporting eveny

by hkjfsd on 11/5/09Madison Square Garden - New York

Cost aside( and they are exceptionally high). The Garden is clean safe and well managed. I just don't understand why food and drink are so expensive or why a senior like myself can't get a break

    FINALLY!!!

by Smoove1 on 11/3/09Madison Square Garden - New York

I think that for the first time this season, including the pre-season, the Knicks finally played some solid basketball as well as solid team defense. The game was a pleasure to watch!!!

by sixer1 on 11/3/09Madison Square Garden - New York

I love seeing basketball in the hallowed halls of the Garden. Travelled from Philly to NY to see my 76ers club the Knicks again. Nothing better than a day in New York.

Knicks are for Enterteinment purposes only

by DirectorNY on 11/3/09Madison Square Garden - New York

This is no longer a basketball team that NY fans go watch and root for, it has become a tourist attraction and it's for enterteinment purposes only. There are numerous activities during the game such as shows, acts, dancers, competitions, games, "fake" fans employed by the garden and it makes for a bnice time, however, Basketball is secondary. No one really cares about the game.

    knicks win

by knuke on 11/3/09Madison Square Garden - New York

While the Yankees struggled and ultimately fell to the Phillies, our Knicks sent the Hornets home crying to their mommies.

    Amazing!

by mdrago on 11/1/09Madison Square Garden - New York

The game was incredible, though it is my belief that the Knicks have to work the defense!!! Despite that everything was AMAZING!!! The place, the whole show! If I am ever in NYC again definetly I'll go see another game!

    Knicks still need work but...

by Zoe2628 on 11/1/09Madison Square Garden - New York

They really stepped it up in the 4th but it was hard to watch the first 3 qtrs. They need to play better defense and more scoring options. Inconsistent shots, unsure shots, forced shots, just all over the place. But I definitely enjoy the atmosphere of the garden. And of course they couldn't hold it together in OT

    Knicks Home Opener 2009

by Amillie on 11/1/09Madison Square Garden - New York

as a die hard knick fan, it is difficult to watch them lose this game to the 76ers.. it looked disappointing in the beginning but the determination and drive of this team inspires you to stick with them and hope for a comeback, which they did. It just shows that the knicks are trying hard and hopefully the 09-10 season will be better
