New York Knicks History

The Knicks were established in 1946 and are one of the founding members of the Basketball Association of America, which became the NBA after merging with the National Basketball League in 1949. The Knicks and Boston Celtics are the only two original NBA teams still located in their original cities.

The Knicks saw early success, advancing to the NBA Finals in three consecutive years from 1950 to 1953. They lost all three series, twice to the Minneapolis Lakers and once to the Rochester Royals. The franchise’s next successful era began in the late '60s, under the tutelage of head coach Red Holzman. They won 54 games in Holzman's first full season as head coach in the 1968–69 season, then improved to 60 wins the following year. The Knicks won their first NBA Championship in 1970, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games. Holzman won Coach of the Year, while center Willis Reed won NBA MVP and Finals MVP.

Holzman and Reed led the Knicks back to the finals in two of the next three seasons, facing the Lakers both times. They split those two series, winning their second championship in the 1972–73 season.

The Knicks did not experience success again until the '90s, when future Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing led them back to the NBA Finals in 1993–94 and 1998–99. They lost both series, first in seven games to the Houston Rockets, then in five games to the San Antonio Spurs.

The Knicks traded for star Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets in 2011. He proved to be an elite scorer, but team success eluded the Knicks. They made it to the playoffs three times in Carmelo's seven-year tenure with the team, winning one series in 2013.

The Knicks reached the playoffs once again during the 2020–21 season, reinvigorated by power forward Julius Randle, who was awarded the NBA’s Most Improved Player distinction in 2021, and advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2023 with the additional firepower of newly acquired point guard Jalen Brunson.

New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden

Located above Penn Station, the current Madison Square Garden has been the home to the Knicks since 1968 and is one of the most iconic arenas in all of sports. The Knicks' arena has always been called Madison Square Garden, and they played in the previous iteration from the founding of the franchise in 1946 until moving to the current building in 1968. The current MSG is the oldest NBA arena still in use. Madison Square Garden also has the distinction of being the only NBA arena that is not named after a corporate sponsor.

    Knick Game

by sgmetfan on 11/12/09Madison Square Garden - New York

It's so frustrating to root for this team. They are setting their team up to be major players in the free agent pool of 2010 but they are crazy to think LeBron James would sign here. He wants to come to a team that has a chance to win a championship. He's got a much better chance for that staying in Cleveland...This team doesn't know how to play defense to a man. To me, Mike D'Antoni will not be the coach to take this team to the promised land if they can't stop anybody. The losing atmosphere is a long way from being removed.

    Knicks game was fun

by Princessniecy on 11/12/09Madison Square Garden - New York

We had good seats. There were a lot of activities during the timeouts. The snacks are a bit overpriced but overall not to bad. I recommend public transportation because parking cost about $35.00. Of course, the Knicks lost but we had fun anyway.

The hot dog was delicious! MSG is huge and beautifull! one day i'll never forget...thanks Knicks, thanks MSG, thanks Ticketmaster, thanks New York.

Knicks are just a bad team this year

by treez on 11/12/09Madison Square Garden - New York

Thank god I bought the tickets for 50% off otherwise it would've been a total rip off. They are SO bad this year. I would only recommend going if you are a die hard fan like me. If you do, please don't pay for full price tickets. MSG has to give away steals becuase of how bad they are this year.

Ringling Bros. Presents The NY Knicks

by DeanWien on 11/12/09Madison Square Garden - New York

Well, I've been going to a lot of sporting events at Madison Square Garden which includes The NY Rangers, and NY Knicks. I've also gone to many many concerts at The Garden since 1975. Last Night, I went to see The Knicks vs. The Hawks, and I have to honestly tell you that I was pretty angry. Not so much about The Knicks losing, but I was angry about the following: Last night felt like I was going to The Circus. There was so much going on like contests, dancers, games, music, that you kinda feel that The Knicks get lost in this whole circus. Everytime they went for shots, loud music was playing. I would think basketball involves concentration on playing the game. I'm willing to bet that The Knicks are totally distracted when trying to play. It looks like the reason that we all come to see The Knicks is totally overlooked! If I want to go see a Good Circus, I will definately go see The Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey Circus at The Garden. If the owners of The Knicks are reading this, or the owner of Madison Square Garden, I would hope you would agree that we need a winning team that won't be so distracted when playing. I'm all for fun, but last night really felt like everything was just way too much, and more concentration should be on the sport of Basketball itself.

Knicks: A Great night out but just a losing effort

by JuniorMcMuffins on 11/12/09Madison Square Garden - New York

this is my 5th time going to a knicks game... going to the Knicks v Hawks (11/11/09) was a great game up until the final minutes... the knicks like usual or at least the past 9 years just don't have it in them to close games out but besides that the seats (sect. 424 15/16) were nice a view of the court making the experience of the game and stadium even better... the fans were into the game for the entirety. The only thing is that Jared Jefferies is one of the worst players in the NBA but its funny to listen to people call him out and boo him...

    Lebron is amazing!

by CavsFanfromNY on 11/11/09Madison Square Garden - New York

The only bad part about the game was that the Knicks are so bad that Lebron didn't have to play as much as I'd like to see him.

First time at MSG, a good time at MSG

by MemoFan on 11/10/09Madison Square Garden - New York

Nicks-Jazz game was the first time for me at Madison Square Garden and, yeah I liked it. Watching Mehmet Okur from my country playing a good game was fun, watching Nicks coming from behind was fun, all the shows and the beer I had with a footlong was also fun :) I was even on the big screen for a while. What can you ask for more? I will be definitely coming to MSG again and, sorry Nicks' fans but, to support Hedo and the Raptors :)

Better if the Knicks had won

by paulinhah on 11/10/09Madison Square Garden - New York

Very good organization. Bought my ticket online (I live in Paris) and retrieved it from the Ticketmaster automated kiosk at the MSG just one hour before the event without any fuss or line. PERFECT. Plus, my friend could not join me with a last minute emergency at work...so I went by myself and it felt 100% safe for a girl to be at the basketball game. I would not do the same in other cities...

Good Knicks Experience, Concession Workers Slow

by redking on 11/9/09Madison Square Garden - New York

It was a typical basketball game. There were a lot of celebrities in the building because the Yankees parade was the same day and LeBron James and Shaq were in town. I sat in the 400 level and the food concession workers didn't know how to process the season subcriber food & merchandise coupons I had. So I stood there forever waiting for them to process the coupons while not getting my food. Please teach all the concession workers how to accept these coupons, otherwise what is the point of giving them out to season subscribers?!?

MSG knows how to run a sporting eveny

by hkjfsd on 11/5/09Madison Square Garden - New York

Cost aside( and they are exceptionally high). The Garden is clean safe and well managed. I just don't understand why food and drink are so expensive or why a senior like myself can't get a break
