New York Knicks History

The Knicks were established in 1946 and are one of the founding members of the Basketball Association of America, which became the NBA after merging with the National Basketball League in 1949. The Knicks and Boston Celtics are the only two original NBA teams still located in their original cities.

The Knicks saw early success, advancing to the NBA Finals in three consecutive years from 1950 to 1953. They lost all three series, twice to the Minneapolis Lakers and once to the Rochester Royals. The franchise’s next successful era began in the late '60s, under the tutelage of head coach Red Holzman. They won 54 games in Holzman's first full season as head coach in the 1968–69 season, then improved to 60 wins the following year. The Knicks won their first NBA Championship in 1970, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games. Holzman won Coach of the Year, while center Willis Reed won NBA MVP and Finals MVP.

Holzman and Reed led the Knicks back to the finals in two of the next three seasons, facing the Lakers both times. They split those two series, winning their second championship in the 1972–73 season.

The Knicks did not experience success again until the '90s, when future Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing led them back to the NBA Finals in 1993–94 and 1998–99. They lost both series, first in seven games to the Houston Rockets, then in five games to the San Antonio Spurs.

The Knicks traded for star Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets in 2011. He proved to be an elite scorer, but team success eluded the Knicks. They made it to the playoffs three times in Carmelo's seven-year tenure with the team, winning one series in 2013.

The Knicks reached the playoffs once again during the 2020–21 season, reinvigorated by power forward Julius Randle, who was awarded the NBA’s Most Improved Player distinction in 2021, and advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2023 with the additional firepower of newly acquired point guard Jalen Brunson.

New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden

Located above Penn Station, the current Madison Square Garden has been the home to the Knicks since 1968 and is one of the most iconic arenas in all of sports. The Knicks' arena has always been called Madison Square Garden, and they played in the previous iteration from the founding of the franchise in 1946 until moving to the current building in 1968. The current MSG is the oldest NBA arena still in use. Madison Square Garden also has the distinction of being the only NBA arena that is not named after a corporate sponsor.

    What An Amazing Game!!

by FrexNyc on 11/23/09Madison Square Garden - New York

Yesterday Afternoon, we went to see the Celtics vs. Knicks Game and were pleasantly surprised at how quickly we got thru Will Call to pick up our tickets and how amazing our seats were. We were in the 300's and expected to have awful seats but they were all that were available and to our surprise the seats were great!! The Knicks did a great job of keeping the audience entertained with the Knicks Dancers, Kids and the Quick Change Magic Act. The game itself was great, going into overtime... What an amazing experience for my first Knicks game!! Although I was routing for the Celtics, I would def attend another Knicks game!!

    What an Event

by Spencey on 11/23/09Madison Square Garden - New York

An absolutely fantastic 'EVENT'. From the first minute to the last we were entertained. I'm a huge football fan but we could learn a great deal from basketball. I thought that being a stop start type of game, it might be a tad boring! Definately not.............. The organisation, the inbetween play acts, the food, seating etc etc was great. I would go back to the States just for this. I'm hooked.

Too much noise through the PA system. Do we really need to hear all the "DEFENSE" chants in the final 5 minutes and overtime?

    Knicks vs Celtics

by Lene0205 on 11/23/09Madison Square Garden - New York

I had a great time at the game. It is definitely more fun to go to the game than it is to watch on TV. I danced, I screamed, I ate a foot-long hot dog. On the way home I to told my husband that I had a really good time (as I was still dancing in the car). He looked at me, laughed and told me to look for more tickets. It was a good night out for a Knicks fan. I wanted a free t-shirt but no such luck. Anthony Anderson started a wave that was the best I've seen. It is that kind of stuff that you don't get to see on TV. There was one older gentleman who was on the jumbotron dancing in a suit. He then unbutton his shirt and took it off. Underneath his shirt was a Knicks T-shirt. He had the crowd going. With all that is going on in the world, it was nice just to have fun and be around people who were just out for a good time.

    First Ever Knicks Game

by Choiness27 on 11/20/09Madison Square Garden - New York

This was my first-ever Knicks at Madison Square Garden. I have seen a St. John's University/West Virginia game there, but have always wanted to see a NBA game there. I have been to a Rangers game and the circus at the Garden, but it is truly meant to showcase basketball. The game was competitive, as the Knicks had the Hawks number for the first half (or the Hawks played horribly...depending on how you look at it), but in typical Knicks fashion, they got blown out. I would absolutely come to another Knicks game, as the atmosphere, ambiance, and setting were great!

    Never seen anything like it!!

by SamHannah on 11/18/09Madison Square Garden - New York

A Brit travelling to USA HAS to go to a Basketball game. The whole evening was just surreal..the entertainment on court never stops and the actual game seems like a sideshow to the danceoffs, trampolinists and cheerleaders. You have to witness this, Such a good atmosphere, the Yanks are definately passionate about sport!

Another loss to a bad team

by abpapush on 11/16/09Madison Square Garden - New York

We lost to the Warriors, one of the most dysfunctional teams in the league right now. That sucked. The general atmosphere during the game was subdued, it was probably the most subdued I have ever seen it in the Garden. We need to stop bringing out the New York Sticks and bring the cheerleaders out more. Also, it would be fun if some of the cheerleaders walked around the arena like they used to. I did not really like the 16 - 18 year old kids sporting Knicks gear running around trying to pump up the crowd when we were getting blown away. Also, I would like to see like a $5,000 half court shot during half time, something exciting, where I fan could win money. I think that would get the fans riled up. I enjoyed the Tic-Tac-Toe game that two of the fans competed in. Last point, which I make a lot so it probably falls on deaf ears. It is a bit aggravating to see that the garden continues to change "outlandish" prices for food and drinks. I understand overcharging for beer, but hot dogs / pretzels and water should be cheap. If the Knicks were winning, and you were putting out a quality product that would be one thing. But so far they stink, and so I think prices need to come down.; Its tough to excuse, when the team is so bad.

    Knicks Bad/Service Worse

by Dano22 on 11/16/09Madison Square Garden - New York

We all know the Knicks are terrible this year. But get this. I purchased a special package that including a hot dog, popcorn and soda. The lines were long and slow. I waited twice with my 11 yr old son for over 10 minutes. Finally in the middle of the 3rd Qtr the line was only 8 deep. I ran up but they ran out of hot dogs or popcorn. They were sold out! The "most famous arena" was half full but they didn't have enough hot dogs and popcorn. What a joke.

    Lebron comes to NY

by Amillie on 11/15/09Madison Square Garden - New York

it was great seeing Lebron, but until he docks a knicks jersey, he is still the enemy. Lebron did put on a show and it looked like the knicks were out of it but they always keep the fans into the game. Compared to the inferences that people made about NY getting blown out by the cavs, we only lost by 9 points..maybe next time NY

    Knicks vs. Golden State

by Anonymous on 11/14/09Madison Square Garden - New York

There is always a great feeling watching a game in MSG. However, for the last decade the Knicks have been disappointing. Come on guys, get it together!! Your fans deserve more. You have "heart" to play for New York. Besides the game, the lines at Will Call were ridiculous!! There needs be a better way of managing this process.

Time out and half time was entertaining. The team ,doesnt know each individual role as players. confidence non existent. Horrible product, long time knick fan. Coach not getting most out of players skills. I was a part of history yesterday, worse start ever. Dolans spent ton of money and still no results. Similiar to mets debacle. very tough as a paying fan to continuously swallow. Should have begged Charles Oakley to sit as bench coach. I wish Clyde would coach some resposibility to the current roster. This is New York
