    Will surely flop on Broadway

by Thom5 on 2/4/13Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

It never ceases to amaze me that local audiences give standing ovations for everything. It's a lot like the over use of "very". What should we do when we really want to use very to be emphatic or really point out that a theatre performance is truly excellent? There's nothing left to do. A poor story line, departing significantly from actual history, along with forgettable lyrics and music will mean a short run on Broadway -- if it makes it that far. This one may have already seen its longest run here in Raleigh.

    Very good

by Unhappycampers25 on 2/4/13Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

Very good. Talented, energetic performers, pleasant music, entertaining, light musical. We need more musicals like this. I strongly suggest subtitles for the musical numbers for the hearing impaired.

Took my husband a computer geek by trade and we both thoroughly enjoyed this show. One of the best ever we have seen! Great story. Super funny. Cast was great.

    Nerds was awesome!

by Anonymous on 2/3/13Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

Loved the show! Hope that it does great on Broadway. The singing and dancing was great but the humor was hilarious! Anyone would get a laugh out of this play I think, at least anyone who is technologically connected, which is the majority these days for sure!

    Nerdiful Night

by shotsy on 2/3/13Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

overall this was a great production. voices of all actors were superb. the story flowed well and dynamics between actors was very smooth. witty. played well to the audience. in a smaller venue like the a.j. fletcher with 600 seats, the high intensity lights from the stage set that flashed periodically were briefly blinding. least favorite effect is when it is difficult to understand singers when dueling duets and overly presenting the individual's song. gate and jobs duel/duet was also difficult at times to get the words, despite their handling of mics. not uncommon in musical shows, unfortunately.

    Clever; good for off-Broadway

by karenfromdurham on 2/3/13Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

This a very clever production. I learned a bit about Gates and Jobs (knew nothing previously) and I had enough computer background (lots of word processing and web use) to get most of the more techie jokes and appreciate the technological progression. The dialogue is witty, music, varied and fun, choreography animated, and the cast was outstanding both in their acting and singing. However, overall it felt a bit shallow -- lacking something. Perhaps the larger truth -- that "nerds" are cool people that add a lot to our world -- isn't all that surprising, or large enough. Some more dialogue that gives us more substance about Gates' and Jobs' personalities might be good. The 4 of us who attended would rate it between 3 and 4 stars -- $50 a ticket would have been more reasonable than $75. It seems right for off-Broadway where it might go for a year, but not meaty enough for Broadway.

Nerds was just ok with a few laughs

by Dannyinnc on 2/1/13Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

The story was cute but simple. If you grew up in the 80 and 90's you will laugh at jokes about that time. The story is the start and building if Apple and Window's empires. The songs were ok as well as the dancing. Both seemed forced at points. The set was cool. If you want some mindless laughs, this is a good show, just not for $80+.

Very Good For A Pre-Broadway Engagement

by ChrisW18 on 1/29/13Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

This was a very good show, overall. It was especially well done considering there were numerous parts and only nine cast members. It was funny at times but had a nice storyline. Sometimes the scenes did get a little cheesy but I would go see it again!

Get down and nerdy with NERDS!

by KAB54 on 1/29/13Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

This was a Sunday afternoon surprise. From the bumbling Bill Gates (Stanley Bahorek) to the sweetest Oracle angel on earth (Diana DeGarmo), the show made me laugh, cry, and cheer for all of those who were considered losers in their struggling youthful days. The show, with a few adjustments in the set and in comfort with the blocking, will be a great success in NYC. I'll be tracking the Tony awards in a year to two! This musical was an unexpected joyful experience -- one that I will be enjoying for a second time this weekend. Do not pass "Go," do not collect $200, get to the AJ Fletcher theatre. You'll be applauding before the show ends and then clapping in sync with the cast after the curtain call. It will be your lucky day. PS: In addition to Bahorek and DeGarmo, keep an eye on Cole Escola and Leslie Kritzer.

    Interesting and funny new show

by HairHopper on 1/29/13Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

It's the story of Jobs and Gates, done via satire and music. Lots of fun computer references and jokes. Darren Ritchie and Stanley Bahorek are perfectly cast and I hope they, along with Diana DeGarmo and Leslie Kritzer, are around to be in the show if/when it makes it to NYC. Great cast, and nice to see a new broadway bound show that is not based on a movie.

    NERDS

by svandive on 1/29/13Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

Fantastic show, full of energy and life. I loved the story. While this isn't a historical accounting of the events of the late 70's, 80's or 90's in the software / consumer computer market it is a great melding of truth and fun.

A fun way to Nerd out!

by GCLP on 1/28/13Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

This show was funny and entertaining. A semi-fictionalized history of the famous rivalry between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, Nerds lovingly pokes fun at the two innovators while honoring their passion, ingenuity, and profound influence on our current technology-driven culture. Jobs is a balance of creative visionary and self-absorbed jerk, and Gates is a brilliant yet insecure super-nerd, corrupted by greed but ultimately finds redemption. The songs and jokes are not the most innovative, as song styles and punch lines are repeated a few times. However, there are numerous references to elements of nerd culture to crack up the nerdy viewers, but enough recognizable jokes to keep the uninitiated laughing along too. With the exception of a loving remark about the innovators' friendship leading up to Jobs' passing, there's no emotionally intense moments. The conflict and its resolution are predictable, with events playing out as you'd expect. But this show is more about silly fun. You will be entertained; just don't expect deep drama. In summary, I'd recommend seeing this show to anyone wanting a fun experience.
