NATALIE MERCHANT IN CONCERT:

In 2014 Natalie Merchant wowed both critics and fans with a self-titled, self-produced album -- her first record of all-new material in more than 12 years and a triumphant reminder that she remains one of the most influential voices in alternative rock. The former 10,000 Maniacs singer still possesses the same charm and magnetism on stage that made her a star in the ‘80s, enchanting audiences with her signature unadorned style and whirling dancing. Whether she’s performing new songs like “The End” backed by a full symphony orchestra or wending her way through a medley of fan favorites accompanied by only piano and acoustic guitar, Merchant’s perfectly preserved voice and unbridled passion always make for an unforgettable concert experience.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Jamestown, NY, Natalie Merchant was encouraged to study music by her mother, who also influenced the budding singer’s development by banning TV from the house. After dropping out of high school and working at a health food store, she started singing for the band Still Life, which eventually became iconic ‘80s alt rock outfit 10,000 Maniacs. Merchant released five critically acclaimed albums with the band -- including the multi platinum-selling LPs “Blind Man’s Zoo (1989) and Our Time in Eden (1992) -- before leaving the band in 1993. She made her official solo debut in 1995 with the album Tigerlily, a critical and commercial success that spawned three hit singles including “Carnival” and “Jealousy”. Merchant has continued to build on the legacy she established with the Maniacs over the course of five more acclaimed solo albums, including a self-titled work released in 2014 – her first album of entirely new material since 2001’s Motherland.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Saw Natalie with the Jax Symphony and it was incredible! The pure, beautiful voice is still there. Didn't disappoint and saved her oldies for the end with the piano and guitar - very intimate in contrast to playing with the symphony.”

“She certainly didn't disappoint. Her voice is just as amazing live as it is in studio, which didn't surprise me at all. What a beautiful talent. And a full orchestra is always appreciated.”

“The woman rocked the stage with just a pianist and acoustic guitarist (did not need the other 9,999 Maniacs). She doesn't just perform the songs, she embodies them.”

  • Natalie Merchant

by NewMusicFan on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

I have long declared "Cannonball Run" the worst film I have ever seen. Natalie Merchant has firmly taken her place in my hall of shame as "The Worst Live Performance of all Time." This was the most self-indulgent, audience be damned display of artistic arrogance I have ever witnessed. Ninety minutes of late 19th century/early 20th century children's poems put to song ranging from an Irsh jig to a Yiddish folk tune. Akin to watching a weekend reader of the NY Times wax poetically about climate change, recycling, and Keynsian economics all the while expecting her rapt, sophisticated audience to hang on her every intelligent word. Do the music scene a big favor - save your $50 on Natalie Merchant and go support ten independent bands by paying $5 covers at your neighborhood music venues.

  • Very entertaining. Theatrical.

by Anonymous on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Natalie did not disappoint. She performed songs from her new album, all poetry, in a theatrical style. She educated her audience on each poet before each song which was quite interesting. She came out with "encore" that was actually almost a whole second set and performed the old Natalie songs, too! Took my 10 year old daughter with me, she was not bored.

  • Her voice still makes me melt

    by JMS924 on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

While I'm definitely a major fan of her soap box 10,000 Maniacs songs it is still amazing to hear her sing anything. She played well with the audience screaming requests to her. I enjoyed the current album and the way she delivered it with the utmost respect to the poets. If I had one additional wish I would have loved to hear Happy Puppet or Poison in the Well. Two of my all time favorites. I'm also secretly hoping she releases another political/socially lyrical based album. She has so much talent this generation should experience.

  • Nursery Rimes Disappointing

    by Chic1 on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

Disappointed that the entire concert was nursery rimes (poems with music). If I would have known this, I would not have bought any tickets. I have never been to a concert and the artist didn't sing any past songs - - this is what made them popular!

  • Too bad if you left early...

by MaryandJeff on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Unbelievable show! First half was her new stuff (great!), second half (which we thought would be her encore) was about a dozen 10,000 Maniacs songs. She gave all of our money's worth last nite!

  • Surprisingly Good!

by RSSSS on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

I have been a Natalie & Maniacs fan for years. I've noticed in her last few releases that she is growing out of being a pop act and more into experimenting with new sounds. I admit I was skeptical of seeing Natalie's show this time around, as admittedly I wasn't that impressed with the clips I've heard of her new album...while I like the idea of poetry to music, the few clips I heard were sparse and too much alike. Still, I bought tickets in faith that she puts on a good show. I was proven right! While the show starts off very mellow, the songs became more and more upbeat and very entertaining. Her musicians are fun to watch and very tight. There are a few tracks from "Leave Your Sleep" that I hadn't heard before the show and will now download after seeing them live. After playing about 15 songs off the new album, she came back and did another 10 song set of her radio hits and some covers. Her band helps to make the show. Check this tour out if you can.

  • Soothing

by Bujo on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Natalie presented what I would call a soothing show to put you in a relaxed state after a busy week at work. She presented her new and meaningful material in a calm playful manner as a sophisticated icon as she is. Some people were expecting a rock show but they should have just taken a deep breath, listened closely, and taken in her distinct movements that accompany that voice that we have all grown so fond of. She finished off the second half of the show teasing us through a bunch of familiar hits done exquisitely well while interactively addressing the crowd with some personalized fun. Bravo Natalie! Great Job!

  • Natalie put on an excellent show

by PlusOrange on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Over 2 and 1/2 hours of pure Natalie. It was perfect and as always, she was a gracious and generous performer.

  • Natalie Merchant ignores her past

    by JPchicago65 on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

If you are a big 10,000 maniacs fan or fan of Natalie's early solo work, then you should probably skip this tour. Natalie did songs from her latest CD of children's poems. Her voice is beautiful and the songs are okay, but the slide show and history lessons about the authors was pretty painful to sit through. Alcohol helps, but you may prefer to listen in the comfort of your home.

  • Natalie rocked

Loved it. she was fun, still has an awesome voice, and I loved her new music.

  • Natalie is Amazing

    by Radman2 on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

We had no idea what aa amazing performer Natalie Merchant is. Her stage presence and interaction with the audience made the show. She was having so much fun on stage, which extended out to everyone in the audience and made the show really special.

  • Two concerts in one!!

    by johnboy213 on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely one of the best performances I've ever attended! She played a selection from her new CD, Leave Your Sleep, and then nearly an entire 2nd show of her older, classic music. Her voice never sounded better and she is always entertaining. This is a show not to be missed.

  • unexpected

by oprfman on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

when you do something like this, get the word out before you sell the tix, not days before the show. Her show was ok, but I wouldn't have paid to see this knowing that she was just doing new songs.

  • Great performance and concept.

by alenghi on 7/23/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

As usual, Natalie was at her best! Although, I wasn't too familiar with her current work, I thoroughly enjoyed the music and, of course, her!

  • Natalie Merchant - Revitalized

by jaydez on 7/21/10Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The most upbeat show with energy synergized from her successful career. Since I am a stay at home dad who is always with his kids I appreciate her new album and its roots. The show had me reflecting on my relationship with my own children. I was smiling the whole time and feeling the great vibe. The narration and personalization accompanied by Natalie’s sense of humor was very intimate. She belted out her encores for the roar of her NY audience and to never ending applause, which were well deserved.

  • so entertaining

    by shb6400 on 7/20/10Music Center at Strathmore - N. BethesdaRating: 5 out of 5

Natalie Merchant provided a very entertaining show in the perfect venue for showcasing her voice and music. More familiar music at the end of the show was appreciated. She made the audience feel engaged with her. The Strathmore is an incredible facility. The music center and mansion provide the best atmosphere for all the arts.

Two and a half hours of shear brilliance. Natalie was in fine form and had an excellent rapport with the audience. Her voice is as good as ever. Highly recommended.

  • It was my privilege to be part of her audience.

    by nicelp3 on 7/19/10Music Center at Strathmore - N. BethesdaRating: 5 out of 5

I knew very little about Natalie before the concert. I had heard her on an NPR interview and was intrigued enough to purchace a ticket to the closest venue (which was 3 1/2 hours away). At the concert I found out that she is far more than a voice on the radio. She shared herself with her singing voice, her dancing body, her intellegent commentary, her wonderful humor, her loving and grateful interaction with the audience and her direction of her superb band/orchestra. I never saw an artist offer such an extensive set of tunes after receiving a standing ovation at the "end' of the concert. It was like attending 2 concerts for the price of one. An excellent concert well worth the 7+ hours of driving needed to get there and return home. I've already recommended the concert to some of my friends. There's so much more to her than an amazing voice, and we got to enjoy all she was willing to share for hours. If you have any doubts, BUY THE TICKETS!

  • One of the Best Ever

Great singer, great stage presence, wonderful witticisms.
