NATALIE MERCHANT IN CONCERT:

In 2014 Natalie Merchant wowed both critics and fans with a self-titled, self-produced album -- her first record of all-new material in more than 12 years and a triumphant reminder that she remains one of the most influential voices in alternative rock. The former 10,000 Maniacs singer still possesses the same charm and magnetism on stage that made her a star in the ‘80s, enchanting audiences with her signature unadorned style and whirling dancing. Whether she’s performing new songs like “The End” backed by a full symphony orchestra or wending her way through a medley of fan favorites accompanied by only piano and acoustic guitar, Merchant’s perfectly preserved voice and unbridled passion always make for an unforgettable concert experience.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Jamestown, NY, Natalie Merchant was encouraged to study music by her mother, who also influenced the budding singer’s development by banning TV from the house. After dropping out of high school and working at a health food store, she started singing for the band Still Life, which eventually became iconic ‘80s alt rock outfit 10,000 Maniacs. Merchant released five critically acclaimed albums with the band -- including the multi platinum-selling LPs “Blind Man’s Zoo (1989) and Our Time in Eden (1992) -- before leaving the band in 1993. She made her official solo debut in 1995 with the album Tigerlily, a critical and commercial success that spawned three hit singles including “Carnival” and “Jealousy”. Merchant has continued to build on the legacy she established with the Maniacs over the course of five more acclaimed solo albums, including a self-titled work released in 2014 – her first album of entirely new material since 2001’s Motherland.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Saw Natalie with the Jax Symphony and it was incredible! The pure, beautiful voice is still there. Didn't disappoint and saved her oldies for the end with the piano and guitar - very intimate in contrast to playing with the symphony.”

“She certainly didn't disappoint. Her voice is just as amazing live as it is in studio, which didn't surprise me at all. What a beautiful talent. And a full orchestra is always appreciated.”

“The woman rocked the stage with just a pianist and acoustic guitarist (did not need the other 9,999 Maniacs). She doesn't just perform the songs, she embodies them.”

  • Natalie Merchant was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by swimchick16 on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Natalie Merchant has an incredible voice and is lovely to listen to. The concert was very mellow and relaxing, everyone sat the whole time and enjoyed her music. In her new album,Leave Your Sleep, she takes poems about children from the 1900's and sets the poems to music. I enjoyed her new songs and thought it was very creative of her to do that for her new album. When she came back onstage she did a long encore and sang Wonder, Rivers, Carnival, and The Letter. I thought it was amazing how many instruments accompanied her including guitar, piano, clarinet, fiddle, tuba, banjo, and even accordion. All of the musicians were very talented and overall it was an excellent concert.

  • Awful

by kensington on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 1 out of 5

The show was a collection of children's poetry turned into songs. The poets were British and American authors from the late 1800s. NM showed slides (B&W pictures) and talked about each author for a few minutes before singing and dancing these poems turned songs. It was unbelievably bad -- after 3 songs, 4 people in our row left the show. NM sang/danced about 15 of these "songs" and then performed 5-6 greatest hits for an encore -- but forgot the lyrics to Don't Talk. Her band is talented and fun to watch/hear even if the poetry songs were awful.

  • Natalie in top form

by OfraFan on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Natalie Merchant's latest tour reminds me of an MFA thesis presentation, only backed with a steady confidence and of course, that incredible voice. The first two hours are a careful performance of her latest album, with a slide show and plenty of explanatory verse. The songs and the delivery were very engaging and the unfamiliarity of the material on my part only lead to many pleasant surprises. The fact that this concert was in an opera hall was emphasized in that dancing was not allowed and uninvited audience participation in the form of shout-outs and glow-stick waving were quickly dismissed by Natalie with comments such as: "the duran-duran concert might be next door, you came to the wrong place", or "trust the professionals" when some particular favorite song was shouted out. Ironically, she then proceeded to forget the lyrics to "don't talk" and asked for audience help. Ms. Merchant has perfected charming and entertaining dances for nearly every song (this, despite being somewhat short of oxygen in the mile-high city and having traveled from London the same day). Her dancing is simple, almost innocent, and incredibly alluring, as it has been throughout her career. She invited a young boy from the audience on-stage to help narrate one poet's song that she interpreted. It's hard to believe the kid wasn't a set-up, because he was very entertaining and their interactions were adorable. A half-dozen older tunes rounded out the night. Natalie's voice is as strong and clear and distinctive as ever. Truly a great show.

  • Childrens Show

by kriyayogi on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 1 out of 5

This was more a show for kids than adults - some of the music was interesting but the lyrics were childish (not surprising as the songs were written based on early 20th century childrens poetry) - I must say that I was pretty bored - especially with the interminable biographical information presented on each poet. Perhaps this would be a better afternoon show for elementary school children!

Excellent show. Wasn't sure what to expect with her new album but was blown away. Definitely worth catching and stay all the way to the end. Lots of folks left before the encores.

  • Fantastic

by Jamesrules on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

She played her new album for the regular set, but since I really like the album it was fantastic! An awesome set of musicians backing her up. She did two encore's of her popular stuff. It was a fantastic show!

  • Miss the Old Natalie

by Ashleyciera on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

The voice is still haunting and beautiful . . . the musicians talented . . . but it's difficult to listen to ditties set to music when Natalie's own work is so superior, in lyric poetry and in vocal range.

  • the MOST beautiful voice

by Phoebe21 on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Natalie's voice brought tears to my eyes! What fun to hear her new work and then several of her Tiger Lily songs at the end!

I GUESS IF ONE KNEW THAT THE ENTIRE CONCERT WAS DEVOID OF ANY OF HER NUMEROUS HITS, ONE COULD HAVE TAKEN A PASS. HOWEVER, WHILE THE SHOW WOULD BE BEST PRESENTED TO A DAYTIME AUDIENCE FOR FAMILIES, THE ADAPTATION OF ALL THE POEMS TO MUSIC WAS WONDERFULLY DONE AND VERY CREATIVE. IN ALL MY HUNDREDS OF CONCERTS ATTENDED THROUGHOUT MY LIFE, THIS IS THE ONLY ONE THAT I DIDN'T WAIT AND CHEER FOR AN ENCORE. OUT THE DOOR WITH MY FRIENDS WHO SHARED THE SAME THOUGHTS!

  • Lecture or Concert?

by momof2review on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 1 out of 5

The show was forgettable. There was so much info given on the basis of the songs that it was boring. Many times the songs themselves were shorter than the info on the poem the song was based on and the history of the authors. She sang only songs from her newest album, which don't include any 'hits' from the past. I would say I liked her past songs much better and was very disappointed. I think she is an example of an artist who has adapted her style so much that is it unrecognizable to when she was more popular.

  • Natalie Merchant was disappointing

by Anonymous on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 2 out of 5

Natalie has a great voice, good band but we were very disappointed not to hear any of her earlier music. We enjoyed a couple of the songs.

  • Natalie is wonderful

by kirk55 on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Although I like her new record "Leave Your Sleep", I would have preferred the material being covered to have been at least half from her older albums (Motherland, Ophelia, Tigerliily, & The House Carpenters Daughter). I hope next time I see Natalie that is the case. She is so talented and her music and style always shine thru. Will always try and see her shows if possible.

  • Not what we expected...but we loved it!

by jdhxj524 on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

I got tickets for my wife's birthday expecting NM's greatest hits. What we got instead was a collection of childrens poetry set to music. I'm not a big NM fan but I absolutely loved it. I liked it more than her older music but not everyone agreed. In all I would highly recommend going to see her.

  • Great voice but...

by OyVay on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

This is the first concert I have gone to in some time where I regretted not doing some research ahead of time as to what her set was going to be. The concert as announced was just 'Natalie Merchant'. It seems she has a collection of songs that she has adapted from 19th and 20th century American and British poems....children's poems. Her voice remains incredible, and frankly makes just about anything 'work'......but I find it a little self indulgent and less than forthcoming that none of the marketing for this performance mentioned what the content was going to be. It is a an age old complaint by fans........but I thought I would hear at least some of the songs that made me a fan to begin with......

  • You won't want to miss this!

by Anonymous on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Natalie Merchant and the band she has assembled are genius! This is a show you will never forget. The range of music and her voice have a richness that cannot be captured on a recording, no matter how good your sound system. She also revealed her humanity by sharing the origins of the songs and her breathlessness in the Denver altitude. It wasn't apparent! She has a wonderful connection with the audience. She has truly evolved over the years and we got to see that in the encores. It was like getting a second show!

  • Natalie Merchant

by Jambino on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Very educational--her latest album is adapted from poets of the 20th century. An amazing encore of familiar tunes from the past. Funny inclusion of a little boy from the audience. Some berating about people leaving seats and glow sticks, but other than that, all and all a relaxing and enjoyable event. Musicians were amazing and of course Natalie's voice was spectacular and emotional as always.

Fantastic concert. Great new music and old favorites.

  • Merchant has an incredible voice;she composes too

by jkeehr on 7/30/10Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 4 out of 5

Natalie Merchant and her band gave a great show. She sang a great many songs from her new CD and she described briefly every poet that contributed to her effort. After doing two hours of songs from her new CD, she gave a forty five minute encore, singing many of her trademark songs with great elan. The music she composed for the poems was eclectic and melodic; and her voice is simply unforgettable.

  • Natalie is a Dream

by NatFans on 7/30/10The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Although we knew it was gonna be awesome we weren't sure what to expect - but oh my gosh, Natalie blew us away! Her new songs are incredibly heartfelt, diverse and touching. Her performance of them was magical, moments never to be recreated. So many highlights and too many to list. Her opening song was pure emotion and beautiful music and set the tone for the evening. Then, after covering most of the songs from her new album, which was completely satisfying in itself, she came out and did so many incredible versions of her wonderous hits. Bottom line --- absolutely one of the best concerts my wife and I have ever seen in our life, and we've seen hundreds of superb artists over the years. Natalie is right there near the top -- She's a gem!

  • A very intimate and enjoyable concert

by DiabetesDoctor on 7/29/10Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Natalie Merchant at the Michigan Theater, in Ann Arbor, MI. It is a relatively small venue, but I think this actually made it a better concert than others of hers that I have attended. In any case, there wasn't an empty seat in the house. She performed most of the songs on the new album, which were varied but uniformly enjoyable. She provided quite a bit of explanation and commentary about each, which really helped my understanding of the material. She performed for about an hour and forty five minutes without taking a break. She then gave a 45 minute encore after thunderous demand from the audience. The encore felt almost as long as the concert, and reprised a nice selection of her older material. I've heard it said in recent years that her voice wasn't quite what it had been when she was younger. However, that certainly wasn't true at this concert. She sounds as wonderful as ever, and she retains an endearing stage presence and charm that only increased as the concert went on.
