This is my seventh concert this year, I would rated this one the top show. Natalie's present was incredible, she very animated, had great interaction with the audiences. Of course we all know how amazing her voices are.

About
NATALIE MERCHANT IN CONCERT:
In 2014 Natalie Merchant wowed both critics and fans with a self-titled, self-produced album -- her first record of all-new material in more than 12 years and a triumphant reminder that she remains one of the most influential voices in alternative rock. The former 10,000 Maniacs singer still possesses the same charm and magnetism on stage that made her a star in the ‘80s, enchanting audiences with her signature unadorned style and whirling dancing. Whether she’s performing new songs like “The End” backed by a full symphony orchestra or wending her way through a medley of fan favorites accompanied by only piano and acoustic guitar, Merchant’s perfectly preserved voice and unbridled passion always make for an unforgettable concert experience.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Born in Jamestown, NY, Natalie Merchant was encouraged to study music by her mother, who also influenced the budding singer’s development by banning TV from the house. After dropping out of high school and working at a health food store, she started singing for the band Still Life, which eventually became iconic ‘80s alt rock outfit 10,000 Maniacs. Merchant released five critically acclaimed albums with the band -- including the multi platinum-selling LPs “Blind Man’s Zoo (1989) and Our Time in Eden (1992) -- before leaving the band in 1993. She made her official solo debut in 1995 with the album Tigerlily, a critical and commercial success that spawned three hit singles including “Carnival” and “Jealousy”. Merchant has continued to build on the legacy she established with the Maniacs over the course of five more acclaimed solo albums, including a self-titled work released in 2014 – her first album of entirely new material since 2001’s Motherland.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
“Saw Natalie with the Jax Symphony and it was incredible! The pure, beautiful voice is still there. Didn't disappoint and saved her oldies for the end with the piano and guitar - very intimate in contrast to playing with the symphony.”
“She certainly didn't disappoint. Her voice is just as amazing live as it is in studio, which didn't surprise me at all. What a beautiful talent. And a full orchestra is always appreciated.”
“The woman rocked the stage with just a pianist and acoustic guitarist (did not need the other 9,999 Maniacs). She doesn't just perform the songs, she embodies them.”

Natalie and her band are incredibly talented and SUPER entertaining! I enjoyed this show way more than I intended to!
Natalie Merchant is angelic...
by MikeInBoulder on 8/6/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 5 out of 5Natalie Merchant put on a wonderful show. The Ellie Caulkins Opera House is a beautiful venue to see any form of show, great sound! The altitude was a little problem for her, but didn't slow her performance in the slightest. I have always loved her writing and angelic voice, this was my first time seeing her. I hope to see Natalie perform in the near future.
Natalie Merchant is timeless!
by Anonymous on 8/5/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 5 out of 5I honestly had no idea what to expect, as I have never seen her perform before. She far exceeded all my expectations by being real and utterly human. I was moved and drawn in by her personal interpretations of the music. The musicians were equally amazing in their ability to read and understand her every inclination. Natalie is a true star...I am grateful that she shined on me!
Natalie Merchant was enchanting
by leroi333 on 8/5/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 4 out of 5Extremely well-done set to her new CD of children's poems and her interpretations of those poems with her orchestra. Excellent encore of her hits played acoustically. A wonderful evening. Very magical.
Best ever, thank you Natalie!
by Voises on 8/5/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 5 out of 5Words may tell of 'the smile on my heart', if you were there you know the imensity of that smile. If you miss this show, catch the next one. This performance was awesome, a full serving of wonderful. The house was full and captivated for a beautiful night of intrigue with splendid, perhaps uncommon yet familiar verse impossibly connected through soulful creation of harmony to the heart. Thank you so much for being here. If you haven't seen this show, go, find one and go. P.s. Do Natalie a favor and try to catch her closer to sea level, there's more oxygen. Maybe bring your child along (thanks Sam, you lucky little man).

We really enjoyed the concert. Her latest album, her first in seven years, was created from a novel concept. She put multiple, mostly children's, poems to music. You would think that this might have been excruciating but it wasn't,. The poems and the biographies of the poets were interesting and she varied the tunes by sampling different musical genres. And of course she does have a beautiful voice. It was a unique and enjoyable musical experience. She had a lot of fun and the crowd did too. One of the highlights was when she brought up a little boy from the crowd to interact with. The banter was quite funny and charming. Her encore was a medley of hits and some emotionally charged songs I wasn't familiar with but they all worked. She even handled forgetting the words to one of her hits with grace and humor.
different
by notalie on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 3 out of 5I was a little shocked about the content. Thought this would be some of her fiery lyrics with the old sultry sound. Didn't like the subject matter "poems from childrens books". If I had known what this would be, I wouldn't have gone. I think when a singer goes so diverse from their previous MO, it should be posted in the ad somewhere. I'll go back to listening to her other albums. This new one, disappoints me. The saving grace of the show was the last 30 minutes when she did an encore and broke into some of ther former hits.
Unexpectedly Delightful!
by DiningSolo on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 4 out of 5When I spontaneously bought my ticket to see Natalie Merchant last night, I was expecting a fabulous concert of all her hits, and maybe a few back-of-the-drawer test runs thrown in. What I didn't realize is that this concert was an homage to American and British children's poets from the last two centuries. Ms. Merchant has released a new album entitled "Leave Your Sleep" that features twenty-six songs that she wrote featuring children's poems as the lyrics. They range from bluesy, to jazzy, to country, to rock-and-roll, with everything in between. Accompanying her on this tour is an eight piece collection of amazing musicians that are as fun as they are talented. Natalie was playing off of them all night, especially with her complaints about the lack of oxygen in the Mile Hi City. And I was thrilled to see her still dance around the stage in the bohemian manner that I remember. The audience delighted to an additional set of her oldies as an encore to the show. Everyone in attendance received their money's worth. The only complaint I have was with the venue...the box seats at the Ellie are horrific! Never buy them!
Merchant and band are solid
by runandsee on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 4 out of 5Natalie Merchant's show at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver on August 3rd, 2010, had inspired vocals and rock solid playing from a great 8-piece band. Standouts in the band were the woodwind player, the bassist, and both guitarists. Cellist and violinist had inspired moments as well. There was a solid set from the album the tour is promoting, "Leave Your Sleep", and two encores of earlier material. Recommended for those with eclectic tastes. There were flavors of klezmer, swing, blues, jazz, old timey country, folk, early 20th Century pop, and classical in the pre-encore show. Merchant interacted with the audience, sometimes during songs, but the strength and charm of her stage presence made even some minor song derailments enjoyable and charming. The new album is made up of poems for kids, with her musical arrangements. Archival pictures of the poets on a screen behind the band, and audience interaction with a 6-year-old volunteer on stage. Didn't consider myself a part of her core audience, but I do now.

Wasnt expecting a poetry session and kids reciting from cartoons, love Natalie's voice so wanted to hear her sing more
Natalie Merchant was totally awesome
by Ruppy on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 5 out of 5The best and most moving event I've attended in a great many years.
NATALIE MERCHANT WAS EXTRAORDINARY
by JON1951 on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 5 out of 5Natalie's back-up band consisted of stand-up bass, an unbelievable Isreali clarinet player, piano, remarkable violinist, a cellist, her two long-time guitarists (playing mostly acoustic) and a versatile tuba player. The night was magic and she followed it with a 7-song mostly acoustic encore of 10,000-Maniacs material. This is a must-see!
Snoozefest
by missappointed on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 1 out of 5Her voice was wonderful, but....and a huge BUT it was so boring. There was way too much talking, not enough singing. Her latest CD, a compilation of poems from different poets put to music is fine and dandy I suppose, however, I am not coming to a concert for a freaking history lesson on each person who wrote each poem. I really don't care! And if someone does, have them look it up later. Then, there was about a full half hour dedicated to speaking with a little boy in the audience. Come on!!! Fine, bring the boy on stage, speak with him for a moment, and get to singing! I cannot believe it. I was so looking forward to seeing her, and it was absolutley disappointing. She didn't play a single old song, it was all this new lullaby crud...Well, I guess it worked....I couldn't wait to fall asleep.
Natalie phones it in
by bornlucky on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 3 out of 5I think Natalie had an off night. She complained several times about being short of breath from the altitude, and seemed to be just going through the motions. She's a pro, however, and completed a relatively satisfying set, showing off her new album, and doing some older stuff. I would recommend seeing a Natalie Merchant show, hoping she's feeling better and more into the music.
Disappointed!!!!
by RAuhll on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 1 out of 5I really wish someone would have told us we were going to go listen to an evening of poetry for children. What a disappointment! When she announced that we were going to listen to 26 poems put to music I thought she was kidding! The act belongs in a coffee shop for $20. Not in a theater at $55 plus service charges.
Natalie Merchant was mesmerizing
by 1Denverfan on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 5 out of 5Her performance was amazing! The new album made up of poems was so fun, quirky and abosutely entertaining. We were amazed at all of the instruments used during the performance. She ended the show with a variety of her popular songs. She sounds just as good as she did 20 years ago. This show was so much more than we hoped it would be!!
Great Show In Denver
by sag123 on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 5 out of 5I took my wife to see Natalie Merchant last evening, and the show was a very pleasent suprise. Her new work is great and her approach in honoring a group of poets (all her new songs are based upon poems ...), and making the performance about them and there work, was increadibly cool.
Natalie Merchant is Incredible
by bogie1 on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 5 out of 5This is the best concert I have been to in years--the energy Natalie brings to the stage and the way in which she interacts with the audience and the amazing musicians backing her is so Springsteenesque, you know she loves what she is doing. Her new works with poets and their poems transformed into various forms of musical expression is very ingenious and fresh and works incredibly well. What a talent this beautiful woman is!
Natalie is so unique and relevant, what a voice!
by Sicgmblr on 8/4/10Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 4 out of 5Went to the Natalie Merchant show Tuesday and wasn't disappointed. Not sure what to expect. Her show consisted of songs she composed from children's poetry written in the late 1800's and early 1900's. She loves being a mother now and this project was done for her daughter no doubt. Subject matter is not exactly my forte but she was brilliant in her interpretations and musically and vocally amazing. She told a story with a slideshow of the authors that helped make the songs more intimate and personal. Her haunting voice and ecclectic dancing were mezmerizing and I was content that this was the only material she was going to cover when she came out and did a 5 or 6 song encore of her beloved hits like Carnivale, River, and Don't Talk. Finally ending a 2 hour and 20 minute show with Thank You where a reserved audience was left standing, dancing and cheering for more. Thank you Natalie for an unforgettable show.
