NATALIE MERCHANT IN CONCERT:

In 2014 Natalie Merchant wowed both critics and fans with a self-titled, self-produced album -- her first record of all-new material in more than 12 years and a triumphant reminder that she remains one of the most influential voices in alternative rock. The former 10,000 Maniacs singer still possesses the same charm and magnetism on stage that made her a star in the ‘80s, enchanting audiences with her signature unadorned style and whirling dancing. Whether she’s performing new songs like “The End” backed by a full symphony orchestra or wending her way through a medley of fan favorites accompanied by only piano and acoustic guitar, Merchant’s perfectly preserved voice and unbridled passion always make for an unforgettable concert experience.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Jamestown, NY, Natalie Merchant was encouraged to study music by her mother, who also influenced the budding singer’s development by banning TV from the house. After dropping out of high school and working at a health food store, she started singing for the band Still Life, which eventually became iconic ‘80s alt rock outfit 10,000 Maniacs. Merchant released five critically acclaimed albums with the band -- including the multi platinum-selling LPs “Blind Man’s Zoo (1989) and Our Time in Eden (1992) -- before leaving the band in 1993. She made her official solo debut in 1995 with the album Tigerlily, a critical and commercial success that spawned three hit singles including “Carnival” and “Jealousy”. Merchant has continued to build on the legacy she established with the Maniacs over the course of five more acclaimed solo albums, including a self-titled work released in 2014 – her first album of entirely new material since 2001’s Motherland.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Saw Natalie with the Jax Symphony and it was incredible! The pure, beautiful voice is still there. Didn't disappoint and saved her oldies for the end with the piano and guitar - very intimate in contrast to playing with the symphony.”

“She certainly didn't disappoint. Her voice is just as amazing live as it is in studio, which didn't surprise me at all. What a beautiful talent. And a full orchestra is always appreciated.”

“The woman rocked the stage with just a pianist and acoustic guitarist (did not need the other 9,999 Maniacs). She doesn't just perform the songs, she embodies them.”

    Great show!

by Pama on 5/17/23Taft Theatre - Cincinnati

I loved seeing Natalie Merchant again! It had been so many years since I saw her last. Her voice is still amazing and rich, and she is mesmerizing with her songs and style of dance. Lots of songs from the new album which I expected and enjoyed; only a few songs I didn't know, and only one 10,000 Maniacs song (These Are Days). She took time to talk to the audience, which I appreciated. She also took an intermission but ended up playing for 2 1/2 hours total. The musicians on stage with her were also amazing: two violins, a viola, a cello, an upright bass, a guitarist, drummer and pianist (who also played accordion). Her one backup singer was so good too! Wonderful and entertaining!

    Great

by NatureBoy on 5/17/23Taft Theatre - Cincinnati

I love her voice, she’s my all-time fave chanteuse but she didn’t sing any 10,000 Maniacs songs or her powerful rendition of ‘Because The Night’ neither which is why I wanted to see her. Other than that, she is still the great Natalie Mechant. 4 Stars.

    Natalie Merchant

    by s. h. on 5/17/23Taft Theatre - Cincinnati

Her voice and energy are still amazing!! She can sing and looks amazing. Was disappointed in her selection of songs as the majority of the songs she sang were “more recent” and not the “favorites” that obviously made her popular and so well loved. Left early and I knew I would miss some oldies that I enjoy but I just wasn’t a fan of the new sad music. She can definitely still sing though and her band mates sounded amazing.

    Song selection

by JOEPA on 5/17/23Taft Theatre - Cincinnati

Thought the overall experience was excellent. Natalie's voice is as strong as ever and enjoyed her ever entertaining twirling and dance! I like all the new songs very mich, but would have liked about 1/2 of what was played from new album and more of her older hits--espicially more songs from album Tigerlily. The new album is more low keyed whereas some of the older songs are more lively and upbeat. But, again, thoroughly enjoyed the event!!

    Kindred spirit

    by F. M. on 5/15/23

Natalie Merchant was fantastic last night in cincinnati. Her voice is absolutely haunting and resonated with the crowd. it seemed like she projected her voice into every nook and cranny of the Taft theater. I’m rather disappointed at some of the negative reviews, I won’t dwell on those because any true fan knows this was just glorious Natalie Merchant living her best life and sharing her time with us. One sidenote after the concert she came out and met with us on the street….. This was a dream come true thank you, Natalie😊❤️

A Moving Evening with a True Artist

    by T. W. on 5/14/23

These modern times can easily leave one feeling jaded and with the proverbial heart of stone. Then, by surprise, you unexpectedly get caught off guard by a true artist. A voice so unique and sincere, it can soothe the most jagged of souls. This was my experience at Natalie Merchants concert at The Key Bank State Theater in Cleveland May 14th, 2023, with my wife. Admittedly, a casual fan here, that enjoyed her radio material in the 1990’s, I found myself moved to tears at points. Her voice is as strong as ever and her band is in tune with every sway of her movements. They are true talents, as well. Her interaction with the crowd indicates her true appreciation for her fans. Truly calming and soothing, like a massage for your ears. Highly recommended!

    Close to perfection

    by Jim G on 5/5/23

I've been a fan from the beginning and I have seen her a few times before this show. The most amazing thing is her voice. It shown no signs of wear. She sounds better every time I see her. I knew most of the songs she performed and the symphony was an beautiful accompimant. There were some moments that it was feeling a little depressing, one to many sad soungs about death, I know and love all of the songs, but it was overwhelming for many. She rebounded in the 2nd half of the show with everyone on their feet. It was an honor to see her with the symphony, but my favorite way to see her is with her band. Never a disappointment.

    Great collabiration

by Music Lover on 5/3/23Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

What a fun and wonderful experience to hear Natalie Merchants vocals along side the Atlanta Symphony Hall. Both sounded amazing and blended well together. The hall itself has amazing acoustics and only amplified both vocals and instruments.

    Exceptional

by AtlMike on 5/3/23Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

She gives it her all and I don’t know how she does it. Her voice is as perfect as it was in her 10km days. She’s not just a singer, she is a powerful storyteller.

    Disappointed

by CH on 5/3/23Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

She has one of the most melodic voices I've ever heard, but most of the songs she sang were very sedate. The dancing on stage was odd and the leg kicks that the crowd went wild over were just bizarre. At the end of the second set, things did pick up a bit and my wife & I enjoyed those songs. She definitely needs a stylist and someone to direct her show a great deal more. Overall, I'd give the performance a C+.
