NATALIE MERCHANT IN CONCERT:

In 2014 Natalie Merchant wowed both critics and fans with a self-titled, self-produced album -- her first record of all-new material in more than 12 years and a triumphant reminder that she remains one of the most influential voices in alternative rock. The former 10,000 Maniacs singer still possesses the same charm and magnetism on stage that made her a star in the ‘80s, enchanting audiences with her signature unadorned style and whirling dancing. Whether she’s performing new songs like “The End” backed by a full symphony orchestra or wending her way through a medley of fan favorites accompanied by only piano and acoustic guitar, Merchant’s perfectly preserved voice and unbridled passion always make for an unforgettable concert experience.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Jamestown, NY, Natalie Merchant was encouraged to study music by her mother, who also influenced the budding singer’s development by banning TV from the house. After dropping out of high school and working at a health food store, she started singing for the band Still Life, which eventually became iconic ‘80s alt rock outfit 10,000 Maniacs. Merchant released five critically acclaimed albums with the band -- including the multi platinum-selling LPs “Blind Man’s Zoo (1989) and Our Time in Eden (1992) -- before leaving the band in 1993. She made her official solo debut in 1995 with the album Tigerlily, a critical and commercial success that spawned three hit singles including “Carnival” and “Jealousy”. Merchant has continued to build on the legacy she established with the Maniacs over the course of five more acclaimed solo albums, including a self-titled work released in 2014 – her first album of entirely new material since 2001’s Motherland.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Saw Natalie with the Jax Symphony and it was incredible! The pure, beautiful voice is still there. Didn't disappoint and saved her oldies for the end with the piano and guitar - very intimate in contrast to playing with the symphony.”

“She certainly didn't disappoint. Her voice is just as amazing live as it is in studio, which didn't surprise me at all. What a beautiful talent. And a full orchestra is always appreciated.”

“The woman rocked the stage with just a pianist and acoustic guitarist (did not need the other 9,999 Maniacs). She doesn't just perform the songs, she embodies them.”

    Free Spirit Natalie - Unplugged

by DGLM123 on 4/13/10The Concert Hall - New York

This was a great show. Natalie connects with her audience and it seems it's important to her that we do so. She thrives on everyone feeling the music. I have seen Natalie several times, One time at Town Hall a few years ago, She was moving and gooving with a chick she brought upon stage to dance with. I was sitting in fhe front row last night so I was hoping she would do the same, but that's ok. Her new ALBUM is great. I recommend that we all buy it. You can see that Natalie is a natural who feels her music. Gotta Love Natlie

Natalie Merchant is a must see!!

by ohsheila99 on 4/13/10The Concert Hall - New York

This was an amazing show. What was particularly meaningful was the way Natalie Merchant provided context for each song through both a visual presentation of the poet and some stories about who they were and why she chose that particular poem. It really helped me as an audience member to appreciate the music more.

Comical, witty, & stunning performance by Natalie

by markaaronpolger on 4/13/10The Concert Hall - New York

Natalie Merchant's Monday April 12th, 2010 performance at the NY Society for Ethical Culture was stunning. Her repertoire of poetry --set to songs was stunning and powerful. She gave social history and gave alittle bio on each poet. Educational, informative, and an overall fun evening. Every seat in the house was great. The venue was beautiful and the overall experience was intimate and casual. The only disappointment was that she only sang 3 of her classic songs from her previous albums; Tigerlily, Ophelia, and Motherland . Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the concert.

    Natalie Merchant did not disappoint!

by 4chumley on 4/13/10The Concert Hall - New York

She was fabulous as was the venue chosen. She was engaging and her voice the same as it has always been. Too bad that the sound guys didn't realize that the band tended to drown her out, making it hard to decipher just what she was singing at times. But the intimacy of the venue and her performance still made it more than worth the ticket price. And thanks for the extended curtain call ... it was nice to hear some of the older hits!

Natalie Merchant could have done better

by Dreamwalker on 4/13/10The Concert Hall - New York

The best part of the concert was after the encore. Natalie just performed too many songs from the new album. Although she did it in a good humored way, the hard sell for the new album was not funny. People enjoy the old familiar songs. The visuals of the poets, her informative comments, the great back up music, and Natalie's dancing made all the time devoted to the new songs tolerable. Without the long encore, the concert would have been a major disappointment..
