Natalia Lafourcade on Tour

One of the more colorful and charismatic pop artists to emerge in Mexico during the early 2000s, Natalia Lafourcade debuted in 2003 with a fascinating solo effort before switching to a rock band format, Natalia y la Forquetina, and proved herself worthy of acclaim in whatever guise she chose. Born Natalia Lafourcade Silva on February 26, 1984, in Mexico City, she took an early interest in music, for her parents were musicians. She knew at an early age that she wanted to become an artist, and over the course of her childhood she studied accordingly: painting, theater, and music, including such instruments as flute, guitar, piano, and saxophone, as well as singing. Though she attended a Catholic middle school, Instituto Anglo Español, Lafourcade spent several years living with her mother in Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico, where they both studied music. Some of her cited contemporary influences are Fiona Apple, Björk, Café Tacuba, and Zuco 103.

With time, Lafourcade was taken under the wing of Loris Ceroni, a well-regarded Italian producer perhaps best known for his work with Alejandra Guzman. Recording at Le Dune Estudios in Italy, he produced the bulk of what would later be released by Sony Norte as Natalia Lafourcade (2003), with the remainder of the album produced by Aureo Baqueiro back in Mexico. An eclectic, free-spirited album encompassing everything from gentle, bossa nova-style acoustic guitar to hard-hitting dance beats, often within the same song, Natalia Lafourcade is a fascinating album of pop confetti anchored by well-written songs and charismatic singing. It found a captive audience in Mexico, generating four hit singles ("En el 2000," "Busca un Problema," "Elefantes," "Te Quiero Dar"), topping the album chart, and going three-times platinum. Moreover, it wasn't only consumers that were captivated by the album, as Lafourcade earned four Latin Grammy nominations for her debut effort: Song of the Year ("En el 2000"), Best New Artist, Best Rock Solo Vocal Album, and Best Rock Song ("En el 2000"). She also earned a standard Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album.

In 2004, the following year, Lafourcade assembled a four-piece rock band, Natalia y la Forquetina, also comprised of Alonso (drums, programming), Chanona (guitar, bass guitar), and Yuno (accordion, keyboards). Fernando Eimbcke, a filmmaker who had directed the video for "En el 2000," invited Lafourcade and her new band to record a song for the soundtrack to his film Temporada de Patos (2004). The song, "Un Pato," is a reinterpretation of a traditional bossa nova, "O Pato," and it marked the debut of Natalia y la Forquetina. Meanwhile, the band worked on a full-length album with producer Emmanuel del Real, aka Meme, from the band Café Tacuba, and also with Baqueiro once again.

The resulting album, Casa (2005), is indeed the product of a genuine rock band, with surging electric guitars driving many of the songs. Though considerably more one-dimensional than Lafourcade's self-titled debut, and not quite as successful, Casa nonetheless spun off some hits, topped the album chart, went platinum in Mexico, and won a Latin Grammy for Best Rock Album by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Furthermore, the band arrangement facilitated Lafourcade's emergence as a concert performer, and indeed, she took Natalia y la Forquetina on the road, touring extensively throughout Mexico over the course of a year's time. Their last show was August 18, 2006, after which point Lafourcade disbanded la Forquetina with plans to resume her solo career. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi

  • Fantastic Show

Natalia LaFourcade has a fantastic voice. Her back-up bad was great. She sang a good mix of new material and her older material. It is always a thrill to see her live. Hopefully she returns soon.

  • Good experience.

Good experience overall. However, some of the staff inside building selling tickets for other event day - did not seem friendly or willing to give out imformation concerning other concerts.

  • Great performance, rude audience

by Mortimer on 10/11/19The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory - IrvingRating: 4 out of 5

Natalia Lafourcade was amazing, as usual. I can’t say the same thing about some of the audience members in the front of section 100 that decided to stand up for the whole concert, blocking the view for dozens of people who were calmly sitting behind them. Even after being yelled at to be seated, they kept on and yelled back. I guess this is why I don’t go to live music concerts anymore. At least not the ones with assigned seating that can’t be respected by people who think they’re special.

  • Exciting night

I enjoyed the friendliness of the staff, the security made it enjoyable but not overbearing, the restrooms are super clean, the venue was well suited for the show, no technical difficulties, it was a very enjoyable night. Thank for presenting Nat and being a quality establishment.

  • Natalia was awesome! Food expensive and drinks distasteful

by CC on 10/5/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

The show was amazing, Natalia, as always, made everyone dance, sing, and fell in love with her music and rhythm. The music, the scenario, the view, and the whole getting in process was excellent. I appreciate the restrooms capacity. The food wasn’t really good and it was expensive, the drinks options were bad. Thanks! CC

Had a great experience, beauty place perfect for a singer like Natalia.

  • Would've given 5 stars but....

by Steph C on 9/6/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

The sound was horrible. I could barely hear her, it wasn't her fault but they definitely needed to do a sound check beforehand. The concert started while we were still waiting in line just to get into the place, which was of course upsetting. They should've had more than 1 escalator to enter.

  • ESPECTACULAR

    by J. K. on 9/6/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I had been dying to go to her concert for such a long time and am so glad I got to see Natalia perform at Pier 17- what a stunning venue. She was much better live than on recordings and beautiful on stage. She covered most of her hits and expressed gratitude with her audience. She may be a tiny person, but her voice was astounding. Muchas gracias Natalia!

  • Great performance! Poor venue entry forma and sound engineer

by Benji on 9/6/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

The performance was excellent! However, there were some technical errors relating to the gating/security entrance as well as sound errors during the show. The line to enter was extremely slow (it took us 30 minutes to get in and winded through the entire pier). There appeared to be several other possible locations at the venue to open up at least a 2nd entry point to speed up entry, however these were not being utilized. During the show itself there were many sound errors that occurred (drop-outs, instruments being silent completely, and feedback/white noise). Nevertheless it was a great performance by Natalia Lafourcade! It seemed more like the venue security and sound engineers need to get their act together.

  • an amazing artist

by MR142 on 9/6/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I have always enjoyed Natalia Lafourcade, she is charming, has an amazing sweet voice and a great stage personality. The show was wonderful, she interacted with the crowd both in Spanish and English. Charming as anything, loved watching her and listening to her sing, at times my body was dancing to her tunes. The venue in the other hand really needs help, it took 45 minutes to get in, the sound at times was bad, but didn’t stop her singing and her band playing, the staff were constantly speaking loud while she was singing and the “VIP” section was not well define and people were standing in front of the passage so more loud speaking from the staff…They really need to get it together. I will go see Lafourcade again and again and please keep in mind my Spanish is very very limited.

  • She was a great performer. Great crowd too!

The music, the environment, the place. Having Natalia singing, surrounded by skyscrapers, is fantastic.
