Natalia Lafourcade on Tour

One of the more colorful and charismatic pop artists to emerge in Mexico during the early 2000s, Natalia Lafourcade debuted in 2003 with a fascinating solo effort before switching to a rock band format, Natalia y la Forquetina, and proved herself worthy of acclaim in whatever guise she chose. Born Natalia Lafourcade Silva on February 26, 1984, in Mexico City, she took an early interest in music, for her parents were musicians. She knew at an early age that she wanted to become an artist, and over the course of her childhood she studied accordingly: painting, theater, and music, including such instruments as flute, guitar, piano, and saxophone, as well as singing. Though she attended a Catholic middle school, Instituto Anglo Español, Lafourcade spent several years living with her mother in Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico, where they both studied music. Some of her cited contemporary influences are Fiona Apple, Björk, Café Tacuba, and Zuco 103.

With time, Lafourcade was taken under the wing of Loris Ceroni, a well-regarded Italian producer perhaps best known for his work with Alejandra Guzman. Recording at Le Dune Estudios in Italy, he produced the bulk of what would later be released by Sony Norte as Natalia Lafourcade (2003), with the remainder of the album produced by Aureo Baqueiro back in Mexico. An eclectic, free-spirited album encompassing everything from gentle, bossa nova-style acoustic guitar to hard-hitting dance beats, often within the same song, Natalia Lafourcade is a fascinating album of pop confetti anchored by well-written songs and charismatic singing. It found a captive audience in Mexico, generating four hit singles ("En el 2000," "Busca un Problema," "Elefantes," "Te Quiero Dar"), topping the album chart, and going three-times platinum. Moreover, it wasn't only consumers that were captivated by the album, as Lafourcade earned four Latin Grammy nominations for her debut effort: Song of the Year ("En el 2000"), Best New Artist, Best Rock Solo Vocal Album, and Best Rock Song ("En el 2000"). She also earned a standard Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album.

In 2004, the following year, Lafourcade assembled a four-piece rock band, Natalia y la Forquetina, also comprised of Alonso (drums, programming), Chanona (guitar, bass guitar), and Yuno (accordion, keyboards). Fernando Eimbcke, a filmmaker who had directed the video for "En el 2000," invited Lafourcade and her new band to record a song for the soundtrack to his film Temporada de Patos (2004). The song, "Un Pato," is a reinterpretation of a traditional bossa nova, "O Pato," and it marked the debut of Natalia y la Forquetina. Meanwhile, the band worked on a full-length album with producer Emmanuel del Real, aka Meme, from the band Café Tacuba, and also with Baqueiro once again.

The resulting album, Casa (2005), is indeed the product of a genuine rock band, with surging electric guitars driving many of the songs. Though considerably more one-dimensional than Lafourcade's self-titled debut, and not quite as successful, Casa nonetheless spun off some hits, topped the album chart, went platinum in Mexico, and won a Latin Grammy for Best Rock Album by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Furthermore, the band arrangement facilitated Lafourcade's emergence as a concert performer, and indeed, she took Natalia y la Forquetina on the road, touring extensively throughout Mexico over the course of a year's time. Their last show was August 18, 2006, after which point Lafourcade disbanded la Forquetina with plans to resume her solo career. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi

  • Pure acoustic set

by Candy on 8/6/23Rating: 4 out of 5

I wish I would’ve known it would’ve been a pure acoustic set…there are a few songs that needed more energy from her. She was great and friendly overall though. Would I see her again? Not unless they’re free tickets

  • A True Musical Artist

by Smarty on 8/6/23Rating: 5 out of 5

A classy musical performance that was poetic from beginning to end. First class worldly musicians. I can’t wait to see the musical progression. Can she get better?

  • Wi-Fi at the Greek

by Eva on 8/6/23Rating: 3 out of 5

The concert was great, Natalia did not disappoint. But there were some technical problems. Before getting in, the Wi-Fi was hard to connect to. We had to have an attendant to help us. And the jumbo screen was blurry and no close-ups of the Natalia and her band. But I think I'll still go back to the Greek. .

    by Hector O.H. on 8/6/23Rating: 5 out of 5

The whole concert was amazing! She played for a good while and you can tell she just enjoys performing with her band in front of an audience. Would definitely recommend her shows to anyone even if they don't know Spanish.

  • Everytime I see her, it’s the best concert ever.

    by M. S. on 8/27/21Rating: 5 out of 5

She’s a gift to my life and to this world. A complete artist: talented, humbled done to earth, educated, passionate and always reinventing herself. Would love to see her for the rest of my life. Cant wait for more concerts to come!

  • Outstanding/Arte en Música

by CPonce on 10/16/19Aztec Theatre presented by Cricket Wireless - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Natalia gave us a gift, the art of music in song. She made us live in sound, music and song for one fantastically spent night. We enjoyed every minute of it and when it was over, we had the good fortune of seeing her as she left the theater and kindly took a selfie with us. The Aztec theatre made the concert feel more intimate, warm, close to the artist. Beautiful venue. The only drawback was the sound. Someone should have monitored that better. Other than that, it was a happy and joyful night.

  • Great concert.

by G. A. on 10/16/19Aztec Theatre presented by Cricket Wireless - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Just wish the fans could be allowed in faster. Line was very long. One thing I really didn’t care for was the offer to upgrade our tickets for an additional $65.00 per ticket. I think it was ridiculous, and turns out most people agreed since that area was not sold out. Stop trying to nickel & dime the fans for every dollar possible.

  • The fans love her!

by J.hern on 10/16/19Aztec Theatre presented by Cricket Wireless - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

I could not believe she came to San Antonio! She had a stripped down set but once she began singing nothing else mattered. She had the attention of every ear and on multiple occasions you could her a pin drop in anticipation for her voice to elevate our hearts! She is simply amazing....

  • Truly an artist

  • México's finest delivers another stellar performance

by the prince project on 10/14/19Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to each of Ms. La Fourcade's DC shows. Each have been unique and found her in top form. She is clearly the pride of central America and mexicanos living in DC during the Trump era. She's as beautiful and as intelligent as ever. Also she brings latinx pride, but mostly, she brings some of the best music being made anywhere today. Her set, in what looked like a sold out show, included most of her hits, one exception was Recuerdame, the Oscar winning song from Coco. She sang it the last time she was in town and some people brought children, probably primarily for that song, but she didn't perform it. Of course, i blame Disney, because Natalia is a treasure and can do no wrong. Besides that, her voice was in perfect form, the band was tight, especially her horn players and it was a joyous evening. Anyone lucky enough to catch her at the small, intimate Sixth and I on her Musas tour was very lucky, because she will never play a small venue here again. Ms. LaFourcade is always welcomed here and should not be missed.

  • Concert was great, venue was lackluster

by Crys on 10/13/19Revention Music Center - HoustonRating: 3 out of 5

Revention Center has a strange and not convenient setup. If you are short do not get anything but front row. It would be better if seats had a gradual rise to them. Or off center from each other instead of straight lines. That way you could peacefully watch the concert without getting a sprain in your neck. I hated that I could not select which row or seat I wanted in ticket master when I tried the buy the ticket.

  • Great Concert

by Alex on 10/12/19The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory - IrvingRating: 5 out of 5

Experience was great; easy to get to the parking lot of the venue, which I was able to pre-pay and make it easier. Close distance to the venue with a lot of dining options in between. Quick to get in; surprised on the food options inside, didn't expected vegetable based sandwich or Topo Chico.. and the best... the concert. Natalia stayed for about 2 hrs singing... amazing !! I was on the side area and the view was great... I guess I would only suggest a little bit more of room in between the seats... this are chairs that were placed for the concert... so I am sure a row or 2 could be removed for that... although a lot of the time we weren't sitting...

  • So beautiful!!

One of the best singer/songwriters from Mexico. She sounds just like her music videos. Thanks so much for bringing this gem to Houston.
