Natalia Lafourcade on Tour

One of the more colorful and charismatic pop artists to emerge in Mexico during the early 2000s, Natalia Lafourcade debuted in 2003 with a fascinating solo effort before switching to a rock band format, Natalia y la Forquetina, and proved herself worthy of acclaim in whatever guise she chose. Born Natalia Lafourcade Silva on February 26, 1984, in Mexico City, she took an early interest in music, for her parents were musicians. She knew at an early age that she wanted to become an artist, and over the course of her childhood she studied accordingly: painting, theater, and music, including such instruments as flute, guitar, piano, and saxophone, as well as singing. Though she attended a Catholic middle school, Instituto Anglo Español, Lafourcade spent several years living with her mother in Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico, where they both studied music. Some of her cited contemporary influences are Fiona Apple, Björk, Café Tacuba, and Zuco 103.

With time, Lafourcade was taken under the wing of Loris Ceroni, a well-regarded Italian producer perhaps best known for his work with Alejandra Guzman. Recording at Le Dune Estudios in Italy, he produced the bulk of what would later be released by Sony Norte as Natalia Lafourcade (2003), with the remainder of the album produced by Aureo Baqueiro back in Mexico. An eclectic, free-spirited album encompassing everything from gentle, bossa nova-style acoustic guitar to hard-hitting dance beats, often within the same song, Natalia Lafourcade is a fascinating album of pop confetti anchored by well-written songs and charismatic singing. It found a captive audience in Mexico, generating four hit singles ("En el 2000," "Busca un Problema," "Elefantes," "Te Quiero Dar"), topping the album chart, and going three-times platinum. Moreover, it wasn't only consumers that were captivated by the album, as Lafourcade earned four Latin Grammy nominations for her debut effort: Song of the Year ("En el 2000"), Best New Artist, Best Rock Solo Vocal Album, and Best Rock Song ("En el 2000"). She also earned a standard Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album.

In 2004, the following year, Lafourcade assembled a four-piece rock band, Natalia y la Forquetina, also comprised of Alonso (drums, programming), Chanona (guitar, bass guitar), and Yuno (accordion, keyboards). Fernando Eimbcke, a filmmaker who had directed the video for "En el 2000," invited Lafourcade and her new band to record a song for the soundtrack to his film Temporada de Patos (2004). The song, "Un Pato," is a reinterpretation of a traditional bossa nova, "O Pato," and it marked the debut of Natalia y la Forquetina. Meanwhile, the band worked on a full-length album with producer Emmanuel del Real, aka Meme, from the band Café Tacuba, and also with Baqueiro once again.

The resulting album, Casa (2005), is indeed the product of a genuine rock band, with surging electric guitars driving many of the songs. Though considerably more one-dimensional than Lafourcade's self-titled debut, and not quite as successful, Casa nonetheless spun off some hits, topped the album chart, went platinum in Mexico, and won a Latin Grammy for Best Rock Album by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Furthermore, the band arrangement facilitated Lafourcade's emergence as a concert performer, and indeed, she took Natalia y la Forquetina on the road, touring extensively throughout Mexico over the course of a year's time. Their last show was August 18, 2006, after which point Lafourcade disbanded la Forquetina with plans to resume her solo career. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi

  • Wow

by JC on 12/11/23WAMU Theater - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

This was the lovliest concert experience I've had in my life. I usually am not a fan of concerts where an artist performs an the entirety of a new album, but the way it was done by Natalia and her team really brought new depth and appreciation for me. Then after the new album was performed following with some of her hits was a real treat!

  • Magical experience

by Laura on 12/11/23WAMU Theater - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

One of the most touching and moving shows I've even been to. It was an amazing experience, it felt intimate, because it wasn't at a huge venue. Was able to see and hear everything clearly. She is exceptional at her craft and truly moved me.

by PB on 12/11/23San Jose Civic - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

The concert was stunning; she showcased her latest album while treating the audience to some of her biggest hits. However, some attendees just wished she'd played more of her chart-topping classics. The only downside was the cramped seating, making it tough to move around for drinks or when people needed to pass through. There was no encore, but overall, it was a captivating experience.

  • Perfectly paced

by Fan of great authors on 12/9/23San Jose Civic - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The pace of the concert was carefully defined: starting with the most recent record, performed, following with nostalgia songs, closing with her greatest hits. Outstanding musicians. Subliminal messages about Flores (new record). Natalia is a great and smart artist.

  • Natalia's voice is angelic

by Robert831 on 12/9/23San Jose Civic - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

The venue is nicely organized. The sound system can use a little bit of help. The monitors are great. Lighting was good Parking was a breeze. I would repeat.

  • Beautiful concert

It was an amazing experience because she sings beautifully and she sang for a good amount of time. The venue was really good, as soon as we got there we were able to go in, we went through security really fast and the venue workers inside were really helpful. Overall a really good experience. Very satisfied.

  • Love Natalia

Great performance, but only 4 stars due to venue seating. Not enough space between rows of seats.

  • Amazing Concert

by Jazmin on 8/24/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Saw Natalia at the Greek Theatre in LA and she was amazing! Loved that she started with her newer mellower songs and ended the night with her classic fan favorites with more rhythm. Loved that the concert ended with everyone dancing! She is such a talented performer live and I feel lucky to have been able to see her. As for the venue, not a huge fan of the amount of traffic to get to the Greek Theatre - make sure you get there an hour before to avoid missing part of the show.

  • Sounds quality was subpar

by Susie on 8/12/23Rating: 2 out of 5

The lighting was too dark to enjoy and the sound quality was sub par. At one point Natalia's mic completely cut off.

  • It was too mellow for me!

by Pao on 8/7/23Rating: 2 out of 5

I have seen Natalia perform before and it was just too mellow than I expected. I was yawning most of performance until the last few songs. I invited a friend for her birthday but we were both surprised, because we like her music. I was just expecting more. I can see everyone was kind of quiet around us too, until the last couple songs. 😕

  • Magical, Soulful experience

With the purity of her voice she transports you to an ethereal plane. One of the best performances I have seen in my life! Very thankful for the experience .

    by Roni C on 8/7/23Rating: 5 out of 5

I've had the pleasure to attend her show for a third time now and she never disappoints. It was my first time attending The Greek Theater and I was very much satisfied with the venue and it's amenities. Will be back for another event in the near future!

It was an outstanding show and venue! Viva Natalia Lafourcade ❤️

  • Great performance, fans were smoking though.

by Fan on 8/7/23Rating: 4 out of 5

Didn't know the venue allowed smoking. Should had done more research. Several individuals were smoking or vaping and it triggered my asthma causing difficulty to breathe since I had no inhaler. Performance was great, sound was great also.

  • Memorable Experience

by Ruben on 8/7/23Rating: 5 out of 5

She was amazing! The performance was very layered and multifaceted yet conceptually came together. First part were her new songs, which were beautifully performed. Eventually in a performance art manner her large graceful yet lush dress was "shed off"and she returned going more back to her relatively older music and even some with old Mexican folklore. Beauty, passion, lyricism, poetry and Art all in one memorable experience....the rest was in the music and it's beauty inexplicable with mere words...

  • She’s the best!
