About

LAURYN HILL IN CONCERT:

As a member of the Fugees and a decorated solo artist, the legendary Ms. Lauryn Hill broke new ground for female artists in hip hop, becoming one of the most dominant musical figures of the '90s and the first hip-hop artist to take home a Grammy for Album of the Year. With new material and a critically-acclaimed tour in 2013, Hill proved she hasn't lost her edge – or her voice – taking the stage with a full backing band and breathing new life into her catalog of hits with updated arrangements, extensive improvisation, and dramatic readings of her socially conscious verses.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Do not sleep on Lauryn! She is back. She was on point! This is what music has been missing!"

"The vibe was continuously raised to higher heights. What is quickly apparent is that this is no traditional act – from the beginning a very unique and nostalgic vibe is set through the familiar set list, but against brand new arrangements that drive the classic material head first into the multi-genre-infused present."

"Epic performance by Lauryn Hill. She killed it in every way possible. So happy I was able to be a part of it."

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Hill rose to international fame when the Fugees' seminal 1996 album The Score topped charts around the world, earning a Grammy for her spellbinding cover of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly." The group’s dissolution in 1997 did nothing to hinder her success – 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, her only solo studio album to date, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, landed a No. 1 single with “Doo Wop (That Thing)”, and took home five Grammys, including Album of the Year. A seasoned performer, Hill continued to impress fans in 2013 with her substance-over-style approach, building excitement for the much-anticipated 2014 release of her sophomore album Letters From Exile.

    Lauryn Hill

by Staxxchips on 1/3/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

This show would have been better if the tickets actually had her performance time correct! The tickets said 8pm yet the show didn't start until 12:15... very late for a show to start. Other than that, the show was okay. She has changed a lot of her songs to be more rock influenced. do not go to this show if you are a fan of the "miseducation of Lauryn Hill fan" she does some songs, but they are changed so much that you may not enjoy them.

i'm so glad i had this experience!

by ilovefashion on 1/3/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

i go to concerts at least 10 to 12 times a year and this is by far the BEST concert i have seen yet. she recreated music that was already at its artistic peak and made it more amazing. she rocked for 2 hours straight and the energy, emotion, and sincerity in her performance blew me away. she's what these artists should strive to be like in concert. i will say that the venue should have properly informed the audience that the time when the doors open and when the concert actually starts are two different times. the doors opened at 8pm but she went on at 1130, 12am. that's not her fault, but the venues. i guess they wanted people to come in and spend money on drinks while waiting for the performance. anyway, GO, GO, GO see her!!! if you can appreciate creative musical genius (which is not to prevalent these days) you can't miss it.

    Never again

by Nana10027 on 1/2/11Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

I've always heard about Lauryn Hill being late to her concerts but 4 hours is a bit much. She did not show up until 4am, NO consideration for the working class. She finally came out on stage and told the crowd " I know i'm worth the wait, and if you dont agree, you can ask for a refund." I did not enjoy the first 20 minutes of the show because i was stuck in shock. Her band played all her songs in a "rock" situation. Never again! Standing for 7+ hours, she should have paid me for that.

3 hours late, but still incredible

Whether it was the whether or a scheduling misshap, Lauryn was about 3 hours late. The show was absolutely incredible tho.

    4 hours late!

by ratbloodonher on 1/1/11Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Lauryn was great once she got on stage but that wa 4 hours late. The crowd was angry drunk and tired (standing room only). People were throwing drinks at the DJ and band that was sent out to stand around mortified for an hour. Then when Lauryn came out she said she was "worth the wait" and chastised the crowd for not understanding what goes into putting on her show and we knew where the door was if we didn't like it. Although she sounded and looked great, the vibe was bad. Prince was there and he left early through the front door!

Ms. Hill cam one after 12 and played a rambling set. She had a great couple of remixes, a lot of Marley and then ended with the classics. If it had started close to on time, it would have been a decent show. But by the end I was tired, ready to leave and embarrassed by the amount of verb support she had.

    Total Diva

by Yankee119 on 12/30/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

She showed up at 12 15 for a show with doors that opened up at 730, hung her band out to dry... gave a lame excuse that a lot goes into a performance when in reality the instruments were there for about 4 hours and her band stood there like stooges for 40 minutes. Told the audience that if we didn't like it we could ask for a refund and then went on to perform all her songs remixed. Couldn't be more disappointed with her. What really sucks is she sounded great. She can still do it, if she wanted. Too bad she pooped on her own fans.

    3 and half hours late

by Aj1230 on 12/30/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

She shows up at midnight for a show that was scheduled at 830 instead of a sorry she say "I gave all you people my 20s so I think I'm worth the wait" and when she finally does start singing her classic stuff she completely changed the sound of all her old songs. Will never attempt to see her live again I'll just play her original stuff on my iPod instead

    She finally showed!

by Sandybandy on 12/30/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Doors were supposed to open at 730, we were let in at 8. It was GA and luckily I was all the way in the front, up against the stage. There were no opening acts so the crowd was patiently waiting for Lauryn Hill. Her band finally showed up after 11pm and at this point we had all been waiting for over 3 hours. The crowd was getting restless waiting for her to show up and it turns out that she didn't come out until 1205am--the next day!!! She was kind of apologetic but then said that if we didn't like it we could have left...it's not like we had a choice. We couldn't have gotten a refund. She sang for about and hour and forty minutes and for the first half hour, the band was louder than she was, but after that, her voice was the voice that we all know and love. She was high energy throughout though.

    Save your money.

by danidanidanidani on 12/30/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

The doors opened at 7:30pm and Lauryn did not come out until 12:05am! There wasn't an opening act so we all just stood there for hours. Two fans held up a sign that read "this is insulting". Lauryn did not like that at all! As soon as she came on stage she had her band stop playing music. She then took time to tell the two fans to go ask for a refund if they didn't like waiting. That attitude she had was not hot at all!! She continued to sing songs from the MOLH album and some Fugees songs. Her voice isn't the same anymore. Lauryn definitely has the passion, but I think she left her voice in the 90's. Her band is....horrible. They were all over the place and it just wasn't working. Overall, save your money. Her lateness and voice aren't worth it anymore.

    Insulting and disrespectful!!

by Sally1215 on 12/30/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

She came on 3.5. hours late, after midnight for a scheduled 8:30 start on a worknight and said to the fans to go ask for a refund if they want. Except the exorbitantly expensive tickets are not refundable. And her songs weren't that good. She changed them from anything recognizable, which isn't necessarily bad, but none of them sounded that good. Mostly fast and noisy. And 3.5 hours late, after midnight!! So disrespectful to the fans. I left early. She said the fans could ask for refunds. Refund my money please ticketmaster!! It was a total waste of money and time. Worse, I was insulted.

    Disgrace

by Movemeant on 12/30/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Lauryn showed up at midnight, left her band on stage on their own for the previous hour to have cups thrown at them, and was unapologetic even saying things like "There's the door - you can go ask for a refund" when the crowd booed her when she came out. Her excuse? "It takes a lot of work to put this together... " and said "Personally, I think I'm worth the wait." And the performance wasn't that great. She does make efforts, but the songs sound nothing like they did on the albums. If you're going to change the melodies and style that much, write a new album. Completely disrespectful and disconnected form the people who put her there in the first place.

    Embodiment of soul

by Jmedstud on 12/30/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

she took it to that level effortlessly. If you were looking to hear her albums, then you would have been disappointed. Ms Hill offered a total experience. I didn't want to listen to her hits, I wanted to be reminded why she is a godess on the stage. Her performance, four hours late..., was stellar.

Great energy, even if a little rusty

    by mdw225 on 12/29/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Lauryn Hill was an enthusiastic and engaged performer. She tried out new versions of favorites and sang a few great covers. The band performing with her was really fantastic, although for the intimate venue, she could have used at least two less pieces and one less back up singer. The back up singers in my opinion were too loud for the kind of voice that Lauryn has, and I found them distracting. Not all of the reworked songs from "Miseducation" or "The Score" worked - some were too sped up and lost the original groove. Also, Lauryn was quite late. Lucky for her she had enormous good will with the audience, who were annoyed but quickly won over. Overall it was a good set for a woman who has not performed much over the years, but there was definitely room for growth and improvement.
