About

LAURYN HILL IN CONCERT:

As a member of the Fugees and a decorated solo artist, the legendary Ms. Lauryn Hill broke new ground for female artists in hip hop, becoming one of the most dominant musical figures of the '90s and the first hip-hop artist to take home a Grammy for Album of the Year. With new material and a critically-acclaimed tour in 2013, Hill proved she hasn't lost her edge – or her voice – taking the stage with a full backing band and breathing new life into her catalog of hits with updated arrangements, extensive improvisation, and dramatic readings of her socially conscious verses.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Do not sleep on Lauryn! She is back. She was on point! This is what music has been missing!"

"The vibe was continuously raised to higher heights. What is quickly apparent is that this is no traditional act – from the beginning a very unique and nostalgic vibe is set through the familiar set list, but against brand new arrangements that drive the classic material head first into the multi-genre-infused present."

"Epic performance by Lauryn Hill. She killed it in every way possible. So happy I was able to be a part of it."

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Hill rose to international fame when the Fugees' seminal 1996 album The Score topped charts around the world, earning a Grammy for her spellbinding cover of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly." The group’s dissolution in 1997 did nothing to hinder her success – 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, her only solo studio album to date, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, landed a No. 1 single with “Doo Wop (That Thing)”, and took home five Grammys, including Album of the Year. A seasoned performer, Hill continued to impress fans in 2013 with her substance-over-style approach, building excitement for the much-anticipated 2014 release of her sophomore album Letters From Exile.

The show was scheduled to start for 9 p.m. on a monday. My friend and I stood for over 2 hours waiting for Lauryn Hill. When I went to ask for a refund for the tickets, the manager of the Wilbur said that the theatre stays open till midnight and she has till then to perform. It was awful and she didn't start playing till ten past eleven. There wasn't an explanation or an apology for why she was not there.

Complete waste of time and money

by Nomoredj on 12/23/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

I will not apologize for giving Lauryn Hill 1 star because she did not apologize for being 2 hrs late and having a terrible, amateur performance.

A LOT of people JUST don't get it!

by HOOOOOOO on 12/23/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Hey guys! I'm going to keep this review short because I actually want people to pay attention. This concert is a MUST SEE for anyone who has been rooting for Lauryn for the past 8 years, ever since she released MTV Unplugged, to get up on her feet and ENJOY performing again. Seeing her jump around the stage and laugh and joke made her fans and supporters UNBELIEVABLY happy. She had a great time. She looked healthy. She sounded great. AND she revamped all of her songs. Lauryn is an artist who is CONSTANTLY evolving. She can't play her songs exactly as they were 12 years ago because she is in a different place personally, creatively, and musically. The new arrangements reflected the frenetic, buzzing, manic energy of the 2010 Ms. Hill. If you're looking for a "memory tour," this is NOT it. However, if you are a supporter and you want to see Lauryn reclaiming her throne, you can NOT miss this concert. Who cares if she was an hour late. She played for nearly 2 hours, and the wait was definitely worth witnessing her triumphant return.

Miseducation indeed - We were DUPED!

by BRodinBtown on 12/23/10Wilbur Theater - Boston

You could've taken any bad review from a different city and changed the name to Boston. Arrgh.. I'm SO ripped. The show time was 9pm and she didn't come on until AFTER 11 with no opening act except a DJ that didn't come on until well after 10. Worse, she changed the arrangement of all her classics making them barely discernable.. What's that about? If she wanted to sing different songs then why not write and produce DIFFERENT songs? I feel completely exploited. No one was happy with her that night.. not the fans, the Wilbur Theater or her own her band- you could tell. The only positive thing I can say is that she brought a lot of energy to the stage and the band was actually not bad. But it was NOT Lauren Hill on the stage. It was was some wanna be eclectic rockish something - not good enough for any specific genre. Bottom line.. she did not deliver and everyone deserves their money back. Please please please DO NOT book her for anything and DO NOT process her ticket sales. No one needs this grief, and I'll be contacting you next for a refund.

    Lauryn a bit boring

by Jkidds on 12/22/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Lauryn was suppose to start playing at 9, but wasn't even in the building until 10:30. In the meantime, the DJ cranked up the music and tried to get the crowd involved to some avail. The crowd started chanting "Lauryn, Lauryn!" as 11 approached. She finally came out and began with "Lost Ones" to a rock infused song. None of the songs were recognizable to me because they were completely different beats/melodies. I am used to hearing her '97 Miseducation of Lauryn Hill...so I was a bit surprised. Hardcore fans will probably love her act, no matter what....but I couldn't sing along because the music was so fast paced. Not what I expected and not a big fan or artists strolling in late.....I left around 12:15 and sensed the band was trying to just speed through the act. The acoustics at the Wilbur are not ideal for hip hop/rock concerts.

    Lauryn Hill

    by BW12 on 12/22/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Well after waiting for 2 hours and 7 minutes for her to come on, with no explanation as to why the show started 2 hours late I was pretty mad. I brought my daughter with me and it was our first concert together, we were both pretty pissed off about the wait. When she did finally come out, without an explanation for the 2 hour delay from either her or the venue, she didn't acknowledge the wait at all. For someone who has been off the scene for 13 years we both thought she should have sang her songs as she did when they were originally recorded. You could hardly hear her over the music, which by the way she kept telling the band to kick it up some more. She pretty much rapped through the show and did very little singing. She performed for an hour and half which is less time than we sat waiting to see her. With a voice like hers and a fan base equally as good, I expected so much more from her. I will never pay to see her again. For $70 plus service charges, her show should have been much better especially considering she has nothing new to offer. I love her but she has definitely lost me as a true fan after that performance. I feel like I was robbed, like I paid $70 to be at a club for two hours then oh yea Lauryn Hill is here. It was like paying $70 to go to a club for 3 and a half hours, total waste!

    Just not Lauryn.

by Aleesh on 12/22/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Didn't sound like her music. It was her lyrics but it didn't sound like her. The show was sold out because we love Lauryn's music and consider her songs classics, but everything was just a remix of the originals. The band was too much, and overpowered music (from her albums) that focuses on the vocal parts the most.

Lauryn Hill IS A TERRIBLE PERFORMER

by previouslyDedicatedfan on 12/22/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Worst concert I've ever been to. She made the audience wait for 2 hours, with no apologies or explanations. Mind you there was no opening act, only DJ's, so we sat and listened to club music for 2 hours (and they repeated some songs in the mix). When she finally came out, she rushed through the set. Her songs were unrecognizable as she rapped every song (how do you rap through Zion). She DID NOT SING ANYTHING, everything was remixed to be upbeat/techno and like I said it was all rap, no R&B. She performed less than an hour and a half, and spent too much time talking to the audience rather than performing!! I felt very disrespected as a fan, and definitely don't feel like I got my money's worth!

Lauryn Hill gave an excellent show.

by TheOriginalMax on 12/22/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Lauryn gave a great show. However my only 2 complaints would be: 1. That DJ she had opening the show. He started out good, on fire.. then he just went left. I think he was on for way to long. I think like an 1/2 hour of him would of been good enough. (2) I was up in the balcony section. I don't know how the acoustics were below us, but at times i found it to be a bit too loud; bordering on distortion. Louder is always better. Other than that, Lauryn had an excellent performance. I loved it.

My girl was too tardy for the party!

by ZMariscal on 12/22/10Wilbur - boston

I was extremely excited to see my soulful, talented Ms. Laryn Hill. I waited in anticipation for 2 hours for a scheduled 9:00 pm show. Ms. Laryn Hill showed up at 11:00 PM. The crowd's intial excitement and giddyness turned into a bit of irritability and frustration....Of course when Laryn Hill took stage she didn't dissapoint. She played everyone's favorite old school from Miss Education album to old Fugees...She is stunningly gorgeous, vocally skilled, and a outstanding performer....but to be 2 hours late for your gig and not even apologize or say THANK you for your patience is a bit of a diva move! I still love Miss Laryn Hill but just a little acknowledgement of the lateness would of been a nice touch to an audience that was waiting for some time.. Still would see her again but hope she's not only on point but on time.

Ms. Lauryn Hill was not worth it

by Lefte on 12/22/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

The concert started 11pm instead of the advertised 9pm start. When I purchased tickets the ticket description said floor reserved seating. There were was no seating on the floor section and with the concert starting 2 hours late, when Lauryn hit the stage all the excitement was gone from the crowd who had been just standing around waiting. The DJ couldn't even get the crowd into it. The band was too loud, and you couldn't hear Lauryn over the music. Overall not a good show.

Lauryn Hill was energetic, but was not the same. She sang songs from her first album but changed the beat to them. I still enjoyed the show, just wish she would have sang her songs the same way (with the same beat) as her album.

    Long wait

Waited over 2 hours for Lauryn Hill to come out on stage!! Not only that, but quality of sound was terrible for the first half of her set and couldn't make out anything other than the blaring instruments. Only during the second half was I able to even distinguish what songs were being played. Ridiculous, bad, DJ for 2 hours! I didn't pay $60 to go to a club with seats.

    Lauryn is BACK

    by cac1213 on 12/22/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Wow what an amazing show. At first I wasn't pleased with all of variation- i wanted to here the original melodies - but after she began her Fugees segment- I did not sit down once! My throat hurt the next day (probably from the mixture of cold/snow and singing too much). She killed it! The DJ at the beginning was TOOOO long. Even he looked liked he was over it!

    L-Boogie is almost back!

by NakLew on 12/22/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Ms. Lauryn had the crowd waiting two hours to hear her at a venue where the best seat was standing...needless to say my feet were numb when she finally came to the stage. BUT she rocked the house. Her band was phenomenal and she did all the favorites including tracks from the fugees. I'm glad I waited

“you might win some but you just lost one”

by PresidentialPotential on 12/22/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

In high school (late 90’s) I went to 2 of Lauryn Hill’s shows: 1 at the Wang Theater, Boston and one at Great Woods in Mansfield. She was the reason I fell in love with live entertainment. I knew every word of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and sang them proudly with her during these shows. She became an inspiration; her live performances were those that put goose bumps up my neck. Now I am in my late twenties and have not heard anything from her in over a decade, so of course I was thrilled when I heard that she was coming back to Boston. I invited one of my closest friends as a gift for her birthday and we attended her concert on 12.20.10 at the Wilbur Theater in Boston. Doors opened at 8pm, and the ticket stated that she was to go on stage at 9pm. There was not an opening act, only 2 separate DJs. After over 2 plus hrs of waiting for Lauryn, she finally came on stage around 11:13, 11:30. It being a Monday, a work night, and the fact that it was the first snow storm of the year - the audience began to grow restless. She is no longer the confident growing star of my generation. She is now an insecure, power trip who we walked out on after 5 songs. Lauryn checked her hair, fluffed her skirt, and wiped the sweat off her face so much that her physical insecurities were evident. She directed her back-round singers on cue, pointing at musicians and overall looked out-of-control. The music was so loud that the microphones squealed and my ears buzzed the entire ride home. All of this would not have mattered if she put on a great show. Sadly she took her most famous hits, sped them up, and tweaked them so much that I didn’t even recognize them until mid-song. She was yelling, oh man it was a mess. I am so disappointed, and must say to Lauryn “you might win some but you just lost one”.

Great show. We had to wait an hour and a half for the band to finally hit the stage, but given that it was snowing out, maybe that was a travel situation? My only complaint, if any, was that the sound was muddy and hard to decipher. Ms. Hill had an 8-piece band with three backing vocalists, so I think that all that instrumentation formed a wall of sound. It was hard to really hear what the players were doing musically, and difficult at times to really hear Lauryn's voice above the barrage. Not a complaint in reference to her voice or performance, though, since there were some really stellar moments where you could hear what she was doing, and that's what I wanted!

Show was great. Ms. Hill was almost 2 hours late arriving to the stage. Her songs were amazing and sounded different than how they were recorded on the albums. Her energy was intoxicating. I would love to see her again soon. Welcome back to the game Lauryn!
