About

LAURYN HILL IN CONCERT:

As a member of the Fugees and a decorated solo artist, the legendary Ms. Lauryn Hill broke new ground for female artists in hip hop, becoming one of the most dominant musical figures of the '90s and the first hip-hop artist to take home a Grammy for Album of the Year. With new material and a critically-acclaimed tour in 2013, Hill proved she hasn't lost her edge – or her voice – taking the stage with a full backing band and breathing new life into her catalog of hits with updated arrangements, extensive improvisation, and dramatic readings of her socially conscious verses.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Do not sleep on Lauryn! She is back. She was on point! This is what music has been missing!"

"The vibe was continuously raised to higher heights. What is quickly apparent is that this is no traditional act – from the beginning a very unique and nostalgic vibe is set through the familiar set list, but against brand new arrangements that drive the classic material head first into the multi-genre-infused present."

"Epic performance by Lauryn Hill. She killed it in every way possible. So happy I was able to be a part of it."

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Hill rose to international fame when the Fugees' seminal 1996 album The Score topped charts around the world, earning a Grammy for her spellbinding cover of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly." The group’s dissolution in 1997 did nothing to hinder her success – 1998’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, her only solo studio album to date, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, landed a No. 1 single with “Doo Wop (That Thing)”, and took home five Grammys, including Album of the Year. A seasoned performer, Hill continued to impress fans in 2013 with her substance-over-style approach, building excitement for the much-anticipated 2014 release of her sophomore album Letters From Exile.

I really enjoyed the show! At the beginning, Lauryn sang her classic songs with a different melody, so I couldn't connect as well. However, when she went with the original melody, the experience was superb. I would definitely see her again...although I don't know how often she will tour. I am very glad to have had the opportunity to see her live.

    Lauryn Hill is a has-been

by OldSchoolLaurynFan on 1/16/11Center Stage Theatre - Atlanta

I was thoroughly disappointed with the Lauryn Hill show. She changed the melody for all of her classic tunes to a rock/heavy guitar melody. When you have been away for so long and you play a SOLD OUT show for your fans, you should play the hits that they want to hear. At least the majority of them should be familiar to your true fans.

    Tardy for the Party.

by anonymous51273851 on 1/16/11Center Stage Theatre - Atlanta

Lauryn Hlll was unacceptably late to the concert (doors opened at 8pm and she came on the stage a little after 12AM) and by the time she performed I was tired and ready to leave. Furthermore, she had no opening acts and a DJ spun music for FOUR HOURS until she decided to perform. I was very disappointed in my concert experience.

She remixed all the songs. The music was louder than her. The DJ was awesome though. Tickets should have been forty bucks.

    Could've been so much better!

by runeski on 1/16/11Center Stage Theatre - Atlanta

Most songs she performed were rearranged to the point of nonrecognition. We paid money to hear the songs we grew to love. We didn't want to hear the remix versions of all the classics. Disappointing. Not to mention, she was 4 HOURS LATE!!!

    Ms. Hill

by Pearlfection08 on 1/16/11Center Stage Theatre - Atlanta

Luckily I had been forwarned that the arrangements for the songs I have held so dear to me would be re-worked with new arrangements. The new arrangements although may keep it interesting for Ms. Hill is not what her fans where coming to see, top that off with sound issues (the band was drowning her out), breath control issues for Ms. Hill (She had obvious trouble delivering some of her lyrics) and it made for a slightly disappointing start but luckily it did not end there. Then she moved on to her Fugee set and it was uphill from there. I really enjoyed all of the Fugee songs the only problem is I had seen her before with the Fugees so that is not the show I thought I was getting. I would have loved to hear more of the original versions of her songs from the Miseducation CD. Overall it was a decent show but for Ms. Hill decent is not good enough. Having your fans wait 5 hours for you to perform and give us a half representation of what we all know and loved was sad. We have been waiting over a decade for your return and you meet us with take it or leave it attitude. Not cool Ms. Hill, not cool and I chose to leave the present version of you and hold on to my precious memories from the past.

    I want a REFUND!!!

by bdionne on 1/16/11Center Stage Theatre - Atlanta

This concert was the worst concert I've ever been to!!! The sound wasn't right. She came on stage at 12:10am and the show started at 9pm and we had to listen to a dj for 4hrs. So I basically paid for a dj and when she did get on stage she sang like 7 song. Remixes all the songs so we couldn't sing along and we could barely even hear her sing em. The only song I understood was "that thing" she sang that right and then the show was over. "you might win some but you just lost one" she just lost a one by that concert :/ I'm a huge fan of Lauryn when I heard she was going on tour I got my ticket within the first 10mins of them being on sale. I'm not excited about her comeback anymore. I'll just bump "Miseducatoin" and "MTV Unplugged" album and be cool.

Lauryn Hill, you have hurt me in the biggest way. The show was terrible. Besides coming on at midnight, the songs were re-arranged in such a way that they were unrecognizable. The music was WAY too loud, you couldn't hardly hear her! Everyone was so confused about what was going on.

    OHHH Lauryn

by E104 on 1/16/11Center Stage Theatre - Atlanta

The venue was fine, a little warm but nothing to complain about. I am a Lauryn Hill fan but that performance was disappointing. I couldn't even sit through it's entirety, her band drowned her out - she pop rocked out her neo-soul style. And with all the lights out (at her request) my best guess is so she couldn't see people leaving - which they did.

    New vibe, same Lauryn

by Ralphdarula on 1/16/11Center Stage Theatre - Atlanta

Lauryn blessed the fans with a new twist and refreshing take on her cult classics. Offering live renditions of Lost Ones and Fu-Gee-La that sounded like a reggae rock hip hop jam fest. Fans were on their feet from start to finish as she thanked her beloved following for their patience and support. The performance was unforgettable!

    Lauryn Hill was horrible

by Tyra56 on 1/16/11Center Stage Theatre - Atlanta

Not only was she 3 hours late for the show (started at 9pm and she didn't show up until midnight) but her singing was horrible. The band drowned out most of her voice. She did some old school songs but completely changed the tune/beat so they were completely unrecognizable. It was so disappointing. We left after 4 songs as did many other people. It is just so rude to have your fans wait that long. We have lives too... we have our kids waiting at home, we have a babysitter that we are paying so we can spend money on an artist who has absolutely no respect for her fans. It is ridiculous.

    Over the Hill

by Herukhuti on 1/15/11Center Stage - Atlanta

A big fan of Lauryn Hill and the Fugees. However I found Lauryn's antics and performance to be selfish and disrespectful. She comes out 3 hours late, with no prelimary acts, so your just waiting there. Luckily the DJ was nice and kept the crowd jumping. Then when she comes out, the band doesn't play any of the music that we all grew to love of hers to her songs. Instead, she has her band play some rock like music to her songs. Which no one could hear or understand her over the loud music to even sing along. The crowd after a warm welcoming of her despite her having us wait, sat there stun as we try to determine what song she was singing. Finally, myself and many others simply chalked it up as a loss and left. That was the worst concert I've every been to, and I go to many.

    Ms Hill Was ON Point

by ShanaMedikaScott on 1/15/11Center Stage - Atlanta

Ms Hill was on point. After see her at African Street Festival in Brooklyn back in 2001 I was super excited to see her again 10 years later. Though her flow has changed it brought back a feeling of an old friend you had not seen in a while. Yes she took 2 hours to come on stage but the wait was well worth it. Her back commanded the stage and she commanded her band. I've seen many shows and this is the best yet so far. I lost my voice at the end of the night screaming as she belted out Lost Ones, Doo Wop That Thing, Final Hour and Everything is Everything. The arrangements changed to reflect her new image and I just loved it!

Lauryn Hill was absolutely AMAZING last night!! I hate it for which ever location(s) that's posting negative comments in regard to her tardiness or whatever but L-Boogie STILL has it and puts on a DYNAMIC show! *drop mic*.

    Lauryn Hill was a Disappointment

by andrewmichael on 1/4/11Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

The doors opened at 7.30pm -- she arrived at midnight. She then proceeded to perform all of her old songs in an essentially unrecognizable (and often, inaudible) manner. I love Lauryn Hill, and her music has genuinely made me into a more conscious person. I am glad that I can now say I've seen her live, but other than that, I wish I had not attended this event. Bottom line: Listen to Hill's music, avoid seeing her live.

    Only Lauryn

by JohnAM on 1/4/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

Seriously, only Lauryn Hill could have me show up at an event with a scheduled start time of 8:00pm, announce that she would go on at 11:30pm, and then show up at 12:30am.. and leave me thinking it was well worth it. The woman is a legend, an icon and one of the most important voices of our generation, and all of that was on display during this show. Hands down the best show I've seen this year (well in 2010) and I'm only two weeks removed from seeing Prince live. Amazing voice, amazing content, incredible arrangements... it was perfect.

    not worth the wait!

by Lewis43 on 1/3/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

My husband and I purchased these tickets for the day after his birthday. We live in Eliz. NJ and commuted over on the train. Thank God we drove to Newark and hopped on the PATH train from there or we would have been stranded. The tickets said doors open @ 8. Knowing it was standing room only we arrived extra early at 7:15 thinking we would hop onto a line and walk in at 8. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE AT ALL! The sign on the door said: "Ms. Lauryn Hill will perform at 11:30 PM! Here we are in the middle of who knows where with no where to go and nothing to do for 4 hours! So we went to a Chinese restaurant up the road and even though we took our time it was only 9:15. We then decided to go to Chelsea Piers and play in the arcade. Needless to say we spent about $90 EXTRA on top of the $160 tickets to entertain ourselves while our entertainer was...well who knows?! So we head back and long story short more cab rides and money later she strolls onto the stage @ 12:30! And THEN sort of remixes all of her classics! Does NOTHING from the unplugged album...just disappointing. She finished at 2:15ish. Then we had to find our way back to the PATH (The only train back to Jersey @ that hour) and ended up getting home @ 3:30AM...Lauryn Hill was my very first concert back in 97-98 for the Miseducation Album..This was just disrespectful towards loyal fans.

    Lauryn Hill @ Bowery Ballroom

by RPRIMETIME on 1/3/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

After poor reviews from her Brooklyn show (the show where she showed up 3 hours late then had the nerve to scold fans for booing) I was on the fence about seeing her at Bowery Ballroom. After showing up at 8:00 (when the tickets stated showtime was - NOT doors opening time) I was told by the bouncers to come back at 11:30 because she will be taking the stage then. 12:00 comes and the WORLD's WORST DJ takes the stage for the next 35 minutes until Lauren comes out. Show was just OK at best. NOT WORTH 75 bucks a ticket
