  • Great show, great cast, lousy local sound

by Where was the sound engineer? on 6/5/24Rating: 4 out of 5

Second time seeing Mrs Doubtfire. First time was in London last year. Loved it there and everything was well mixed with the band and singers all blending well. Last night at San Diego was disappointing. Took 8 people to see the show and the sound balance was horrible. At intermission, overheard lots of people saying they couldn’t hear the words, the diction etc. I’m a musician and the sound was truly disappointing. The band/orchestra was barely audible for most of the show and sounded like they were being amplified from a few small Bluetooth speakers. Bass player may as well not have been there. I’ve listened to this soundtrack over and over and at this performance, the “oomph” was totally lacking. Drums were so low in mix, the drummer may as well being using brushes. Guitar came and went and the whole balance was awful. Every now and then I’d hear some bass capabilities from the synth and so I have to believe they had bass cabinets and sub woofers available. The cast was great however and Rob McClure did a fantastic job as did the whole ensemble. I just wish the potential had been matched with a proper sound balance. And as mentioned, it was hard to hear dialogue at some points to do the low volume. This is a show that needs volume. London has it right. San Diego didn’t. Would have gotten five stars if the sound engineer did a better job

Could not stop laughing and smiling the entire show. It was like Mrs.Doubtfire was really on stage. I can’t believe how much it sounded just like her. This show is a must see to anyone !
