If you love the movie, just don't

by T. on 12/10/19Al Hirschfeld Theatre - New York

Sets are incredible. Choreography average to very good. Execution average to very good. Singing poor to average. Lighting needs fine tuning. Song mixes that are at the heart of the movie have been substantially altered in some cases and completely thrown out in others. The updated mixes do not work together nearly as well as the original. They need to hire a DJ to assist on transitions. Mezzanine seats have limited view for at least 20-30% of show.

No voice appropriate for Broadway show. Waist of money

Do not waist your money on this unprofessional event

    even better the 2nd time

by Sarah on 12/8/19Al Hirschfeld Theatre - New York

We saw MR in early August and loved it. Went back last week and it was even better. They made some adjustments to the second act and made the ending more impactful. I have no idea how Aaron & Karen can sustain their voices. They were both even stronger than a few months ago. Going to go back again in June - hopefully right before they all win their Tony Awards! Treat yourself and go experience this (to say "see" it not strong enough)

    Magnifique Moulin Rouge

by Zumba on 12/8/19Al Hirschfeld Theatre - New York

This show was one of the best I’ve ever seen. The costumes, the sets, the music, everything was magnificent. I’ve seen tons of Broadway musicals over the years and this one is at the top. A joy from start to finish!

The sets were unbelievable. The story was great, much better and more realistic than the movie. A must see.

The venue was extraordinary and the high stepping musical kept you excited and interested. Colorful and electric are the two adjectives to describe this play

    Wow, wow, WOW!!!

by J. on 12/4/19Al Hirschfeld Theatre - New York

Excellent production! We sat in seats 1 and 3 of Row E, Orchestra Left. These are superb front row seats—the best in the house in my opinion. You can look the dancers in the eye, and they interact with you! We also paid $69 each for the “VIP Package” which gave us a private lounge (and private restroom!) with about ten other folks where we could relax before the show and during intermission. Our attentive staff checked our coats for us and gave us each a glass of champagne and a huge bowl of mixed nuts. The lounge decor is lavish like the Moulin Rouge. We each splurged on $22 absinthe cocktails which were delicious. They transferred the drinks to souvenir Moulin Rouge sippy cups when for us to enjoy inside the theatre during the show. I can’t say enough good things about the show itself. The sets, costumes and talented actors make for an incredible production.

Spectacular Stage + Most Magnificent Medley Ever

by L. R. on 12/4/19Al Hirschfeld Theatre - New York

The first dimension of Moulin Rouge that stuns you is the set. Even while taking our seats, the audience is treated to a glimpse of gloriously plush staging, the spinning red windmill arms and the elephant den that make the Moulin Rouge an historic icon of Paris. Before the show starts, burlesque performers artfully strut the stage - arrive early to enjoy this! The music and dancers explode onto the stage in a sultry style, honouring both the raunchy seductress and the flirtatious can-can dancers that Moulin Rouge is famous for. The storyline mainly follows the movie, though the scenes tread further afield from Montmartre, to also take a stroll down the contrasting luxury of Champs Elysees. Satine's character brings a bit more modern day Beyonce-style sass to the role, compared to the classic exquisiteness that Nicole Kidman brought to the original movie. (I was thinking that adding a rouge streak through modern Satine's brunette hair could have been a nice touch!) But the other most striking dimension of this musical is the crazy genius of the music itself. Original songs are interweaved with a myriad of contemporary songs, chosen for their lyrical snippets, which spell out the ongoing dialogue between the characters. The Love Medley is a wildest blend of love song snippets you're likely to have ever heard. Across the whole soundtrack, be ready for Lady Gaga, Adele, Gwen Stefani, Pink, Gnarls Barkley, Madonna, Rhianna, Bono, Tina Turner, The Beatles, Elton John (and the list goes on...) to be sprinkled into the show somewhere. For me, the best musical reference was the Green Fairy swinging from Sia's Chandelier - magically suited! With this medley approach, your musical brain can't help but play the game of "which song do I know that line from?", and before you figure it out, the singers have leaped to another song, but that is part of the cleverness and fun of the night. I sat in the 2nd row of the Mezzanine level and had an excellent view. There is also great merchandise available so be prepared to visit the gift shop!

    A show not to miss.....

by D. C. on 12/3/19Al Hirschfeld Theatre - New York

If you loved the movie, you'll love the show more! Totally immersive experience, intimate theatre with. o bad seats. The cast is spectacular in every role, INCLUDING THE CHORUS! Love the updates, and for broadway geeks, the star power in this show (Aaron, Karen, Danny, Tam, Sahr, Ricky) is like a who's who of Theatre! If this show doesn't take home a majority of Tony's, the committee will have some serious explaining to do......

by Justin on 12/2/19Al Hirschfeld Theatre - New York

Great show....there was many changes from the original movie but I liked them and it gave it a fresh take on the story with just a bit of humor to along with some great voices and acting! Thanks I would see this again for sure!!

Enjoyable, but not a lasting impression

by Jessica P on 12/2/19Al Hirschfeld Theatre - New York

I went into the show as a huge fan of the film, but was somewhat disappointed (perhaps I had hyped it up too much). The sets were gorgeous, the aesthetic was perfectly immersive (from the second you arrive it feels like you are in the Moulin Rouge), and the costumes were stunning. However, the performances lacked anything that made it stand out to the audience as something to be truly invested in and the characters did not motivate you to care for them too deeply. I was also greatly disappointed that I paid an obscene amount for tickets in the very back of the Orchestra, but was not informed that they would be partial view (you could not see the top of the stage and I missed Satine's entrance because of this). I don't mind partial view but I should have known ahead of time and the tickets should have been quite a bit cheaper as a result. All in all a good show, but not a great one. I would probably not make a return visit (as I do when a show is truly astounding).

    A Perfect Theatre Experience

by Janice on 11/29/19Al Hirschfeld Theatre - New York

Moulin Rouge was the last of five tickets I purchased for my Thanksgiving theatre week celebration. It was the first show I saw and it was a wonderful experience. No other theatre experience this week has matched it ... I have two shows left to see today, but I believe I’ll be proven correct.

Seat had a restricted view but wasn’t sold as one

by Jamie on 11/29/19Al Hirschfeld Theatre - New York

The set was fantastic but the elephants trunk and runway stage blocked my view on several occasions. The evening was made worse by the constant sniffing of the patron to my left who clearly had no social intelligence. The show was bright loud and fun. Excellent leads and lovely to listen to and watch when I could.
