MOS DEF / YASIIN BEY IN CONCERT:

As one of hip hop's most revered lyricists, Mos Def never ceases to surprise and impress with his dexterous flow. On stage, he cuts a stylish figure, effortlessly displaying his wordsmithing skills, charismatic energy, and boundless positivity while paying tribute to cultural icons like Mohammed Ali. Whether performing with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli or rolling solo, Mos makes sure crowds are bumped, grinded, and fully educated in the "fundamental mathematics" of his intricate verses, laying it down as only he can on tracks like "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Body Rock." With a highly anticipated new album in the works, Mos will treat fans to another dose of cerebral hip hop on his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dante Terrell Smith, best known by his stage names Mos Def and Yasiin Bey, is a Brooklyn-born rapper, actor, and producer. His hip hop career began in the early '90s with local alt-rappers Da Bush Babees and De La Soul, with whom he collaborated before releasing his debut single "Universal Magnetic." In 1998, he teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the duo Black Star, whose debut LP is considered a contemporary classic and major influence over the "backpack rap" scene. As a solo artist, Mos Def has released four albums to critical and commercial acclaim, firmly establishing his reputation as one of the genre's most stylish lyricists. Reuniting with Talib Kweli for several highly anticipated Black Star shows in 2014, Mos has fans eagerly awaiting more as rumors of new material mount.

  • Surprisingly disappointing...

by MosDefLover on 9/4/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

I was soo hyped to see this show. Although I don't LOVE Erykah Badu I expected a great performance from her, and was definitely looking forward to seeing Mos Def in action on stage. Unfortunately -- this was the longest concert of my life (and not in a good way). Held in a symphony hall -- you would think they would be able to get the sound levels right - but instead the bass reverberated waaay too much, making it hard to Mos' lyrics! Erykah, was Erykah, and actually did an alright job. She's an amazing talent, and I think if you are a die-hard fan you would probably love her set. Mos' set was composed mostly of stuff from the new album -- but unfortunately at this particular show he didn't play the best cut from the album -- Quiet Dog! He's also rockin' the Michael Jackson clothes and moves this tour, so be prepared for that (although I must admit I enjoyed his MJ covers and his moonwalk ;) Oh, and Jay Electronica, who opened up the show? Don't even get me started on him. He's a funny dude, but his performance did not get the crowd pumped for the show. All in all -- for the price of the ticket it was definitely just an ok show. Nice to be able to see I've seen them both live in concert - but I didn't leave feeling hyped or like I wished they had played longer. ;(

  • Eryyhah, should be the front line performance

by Jusme on 9/4/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

I was surprised to say the least, the Mos Def was the headliner in this show. Erykah was the star but I was surprised her performance was so short. She used her time extremely well , but we only went to see her, not Mos def

  • Cosmic Funky Hip Hop

by Mdragonfly on 9/4/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

The mothership was piloted by Ms Erikah Badu! She put it down smack dab in the middle of Davies Symphan Hall. San Francisco climbed aboard and funked it up with the queen of Hip-hop and Neo soul! George Clinton woulda been proud! Then as we arrived at the planet of cosmic Funk we were greeted by the amazing Mos Def who gave us a tour of hip hop that left us sweaty and ready for more! See this show ya'll It's outta this world and the next!!!

  • WRONG VENUE

by Akadi on 9/4/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 1 out of 5

It sucked! Wrong venue for Mos and Erykah barebones shows. Also, I came to hear ECSTACIC, not Michael Jackson and songs from the 80's WEAK!

  • Erykah Badu is incredible

by Amandalynn on 9/4/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

a beautiful, powerful, prolific woman and incredible sound crew made it a great night

  • waited too long...

by meliyogini on 9/4/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

All the acts were amaizing.... i love these artists! But, the wait time in-between sets was WAY TOO LONG! I was hoping that Erykah and Mos woauld collaborate or share a set, but it never happened. It seemed that they were rushing to get Ms. Badu off the stage, but it took another 1/2 hour to move two turntables.... the drums were already on stage. It was impossible to keep the energy up the whole time.

  • Mos and Erykah

by LILJEN on 9/4/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

The show was HOT!! Erykah came with a new set, complete with her rappin and payin tribute to some old school classics. Mos came out on drums, and did most of the Ecstatic Album. One of the most amazing hip hop shows ive seen!

  • Mos Def is RAD

by pizamm on 9/4/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome performance by Mos Def and Erykah Badu. Couldn't have asked for anything except more. The opener was great as well. Wish it wasn't so expensive or I'd go back tonight

    by Swervie3 on 9/4/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Davies symphony hall was the nicest venue ever, coat check good seats and frisco. The only thing better was the concert. Mos rocked and badu was awesome.

  • The Might Mos!!!!

by YelloStar on 8/28/09House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Mos Def is definitely one of the most talented musicians to emerge from hip-hop in a long time. His vocal range and the energy he puts out at a performance is just mind-blowing.

  • This was a great show!!!

by Brianna1 on 8/24/09House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

I really enjoyed this show. J Electronica rocked it and Erykah Badu being present was a very nice surprise. The first rapper was really good too. The only thing I didn't like was Mos Def didn't come out until around 11:30 pm which I thought was a little too late but it was well worth it. This was my first experience with the House of Blues venue and I was impressed. I will definately go see other shows here. Bottom line: if you love hip hop and you should - this was a can't miss!!! Awesome!

  • Mos Def has sooo much energy!!

  • I missed Mos Def!

by Soopadave on 8/20/09House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 3 out of 5

Mos Def seemed off to a good start! However, he got on stage at 1115pm. I was unprepared to be there from Wednesday night at 8pm until whenever on Thursday morning! I don't go to many concerts so this may not be unusual but some of us have jobs!

  • The Best Show ever

by etate1920 on 8/20/09House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

From beginning to end. This show rocked: from Whosane, Jay Electronica, a surprise appearance from Bun B. I got my moneys worth!!!

  • Much more than what I expected

by MsDada on 8/20/09House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

I was pleasently surprised last night!! I had never heard Electronica perform before and he was great!! It is nice to see the South representing with the lyrics!!! Then I was even more surprised to see a different side of Mos Def than I had expected!! He sang, danced, played the drums, spit rhymes and did that without missing a beat. He made the concert personable with specially made riffs about Texas!! It made this Brooklyn native proud!!! They are a must see. By the way, don't know how to exactly spell but Whosayin or Hussein was good too!! LOL

  • Mos Def was Surprising

by NadiraBaker on 8/20/09House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

Whosane opened, it was good. Had to wait another hour and a half before Jay Electronica went on, he is absolutely entertaining and interactive. He hyped up the crowd, reminisced over those who passed (JDilla) and kept the nostalgia going by replaying his songs and having the crowd clap, dance or rap along. It took another excruciating almost two hours before Mos came on, and well, I hate to say it but it was worth the wait. He was smooth, engaging and had that quirk about him we all love so much. He was interactive through drums, and the live set was amazing. He also had a MJ tribute and need I say more? The concert was amazing, I just wish it went on for longer!

  • Makes you feel glowy.

by Nimiria on 8/20/09House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

Mos Def is pure class. His energy is infectious. He's got an intensity and a joy that he just beamed into the croud. Irresistable. I was right up front, close enough to see his eyes sparkle. A woman threw her undergarment on stage and all he had to say was, "I appriciate your enthusiasm!"

  • Mos ripped it!

by RootsLuv on 8/19/09House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I will never miss another Mos Def concert again. Wherever I am and if he is coming in town I will make sure to make that show. His presence is just as natural as it is whenever you see him doing anything else. Loved the show!
