MOS DEF / YASIIN BEY IN CONCERT:

As one of hip hop's most revered lyricists, Mos Def never ceases to surprise and impress with his dexterous flow. On stage, he cuts a stylish figure, effortlessly displaying his wordsmithing skills, charismatic energy, and boundless positivity while paying tribute to cultural icons like Mohammed Ali. Whether performing with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli or rolling solo, Mos makes sure crowds are bumped, grinded, and fully educated in the "fundamental mathematics" of his intricate verses, laying it down as only he can on tracks like "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Body Rock." With a highly anticipated new album in the works, Mos will treat fans to another dose of cerebral hip hop on his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dante Terrell Smith, best known by his stage names Mos Def and Yasiin Bey, is a Brooklyn-born rapper, actor, and producer. His hip hop career began in the early '90s with local alt-rappers Da Bush Babees and De La Soul, with whom he collaborated before releasing his debut single "Universal Magnetic." In 1998, he teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the duo Black Star, whose debut LP is considered a contemporary classic and major influence over the "backpack rap" scene. As a solo artist, Mos Def has released four albums to critical and commercial acclaim, firmly establishing his reputation as one of the genre's most stylish lyricists. Reuniting with Talib Kweli for several highly anticipated Black Star shows in 2014, Mos has fans eagerly awaiting more as rumors of new material mount.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"This was a dreamy, uplifting, soul-satisfying, freaky, funky time well spent!"

"I've always wanted to see MOS DEF/Yasiin Bey in concert. He didn't disappoint... Great energy..!"

"Mos is 100% in the moment and his show was an intimate experience with a nearly sold out crowd of true Mos Def fans. Great ambiance, music, flow -- and who knew Mos could step and dance like he did."

    OFF THE WALL

by CCDOC7556 on 8/3/09House of Blues Chicago - Chicago

WHEN MOS DEF TOOK THE STAGE AT 10-1030P; YOU COULD FEEL THE ENERGY IN THE ROOM. HE PUT ON JUST AS MUCH OF AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AS HE DOES IN HIS MOVIES. HE PERFORMANCES, NOT JUST A BUNCH OF HOOPIN AND HOLLERIN ON STAGE. AND THE DJ'S HE BROUGHT WITH HIM WERE ON POINT. IF YOU WANT CREATIVITY. THIS SHOW IS FOR YOU. MAKE SURE YOUR AT LEAST 25YRS OR OLDER SO YOU CAN RELATE. PEACE

Mos was great, but everything else...

by BDEYE on 8/3/09House of Blues Chicago - Chicago

Opening acts were not very good, and the House of Blues is a seriously uncomfortable place to be when it's sold out. Mos was great, but I had to leave before his set was up because he didn't start until three-four hours after the doors opened. I felt terrible, but I have a life man... I'd love to see him again sometime, but not under these circumstances.

by BMWSpeedRacer on 8/2/09First Avenue - Minneapolis

One awesome show. The mix of blends is un-parrellel. One of the greatest live performances I have ever seen. If you get a change to see Mos Def and Jay Electronica go do it. You wont be disappointed.

Mos Def, great entertainer but a little egocentric

by michy1200 on 7/15/09House of Blues Sunset Strip - Hollywood

Loved the music and the atmosphere--it just takes about 3 hours from the time the door opens for the headliner to come out.

    On a Thursday??

by Meggie123 on 7/13/09House of Blues Sunset Strip - Hollywood

I brought my friend to this show for her birthday. Both of us had to work the next day and ended up missing Mos Def completely because he didn't show up until 12:30. We were really bummed out and I wouldn't go see him again on a weeknight.

    Mos Def is Late

by CleftClips on 7/11/09House of Blues Sunset Strip - Hollywood

Great venue at HOB, as always. Really fun and dynamic opening acts at the Mos Def show in May. Unfortunately, Mos Def either showed up late or just decided to start an hour after the 2nd opening act. The packed crowd even started to boo during the wait. When he finally started his set, he made no mention of the long wait and barely acknowledged the crowd. Of course, the music and his performance were solid but by then it was too late. His lateness and detachment made him come off like a wannabe star which is a shame because the dude is one of the most talented artists working today.

    Waste of Time

by Lala21 on 7/11/09House of Blues Sunset Strip - Hollywood

He made us, his "fans" wait over 2 hours for him to finally come out. Singing songs from new album that honestly, I wasn't feeling. He looked like he was on "something". My friend and I left after 20 minutes. A very disappointing concert. The last time I saw him a few years ago he was great, I don't know what happended??? :(

    i Love Mos Def

by Liizy on 7/11/09House of Blues Sunset Strip - Hollywood

I always love watching Mos Def perform. He is a talented artist. The only gripe I had with this show was having to wait an hour after Supernatural's performance before Mos Def got on stage.

I never miss a Mos Def concert in LA!

by manman84 on 7/11/09House of Blues Sunset Strip - Hollywood

There are only a handful of artists that will pay to see and Mos is at the top of that list! His shows are well thought out and always fresh. As long as he's touring I will be at his concerts!

    Sooo Bad...

by jsay on 7/11/09House of Blues Sunset Strip - Hollywood

I love Hip Hop music but one of the things that's always bothers me is the fact that the majority of Hip Hop Artists think they don't need to stick to a schedule or rehearse their show. They show up 2-3 hours late, they walk out on stage with their crew and all just walk back and forth rapping over each other, screaming out,"You Know What i'm Saying and Where's my N@%#'a's at!?!" I still go to a ton of shows hoping to find the few that put on a well thought out, talented performance. I was SURE Mos Def would be one of those performers. I was WRONG. He came out 3 hours late and when he did he jumped around like he was on Angel Dust, Mumbling and humming parts of his songs. I own almost all his work and I could BARELY make out what the hell he was doing. It was horrible. We left half way through and our other two friends left earlier than that. Horrible. Waste of time and Money. He doesn't need the money so I'd ASSUME he does it for the love of music but that wasn't music. It was garbage. It seemed he thought he was so good that all he needed to do was crank up the reverb and hum songs to earn his money. The only redeeming part of the show was Supernatural. He was awesome and put on a AWESOME show. I was caught off guard by how good he was live. See him if you can. Don't give Mos Def a glance in concert unless he starts to take it serious, like it's his job... which it is! Hopefully artists will one day realize that, considering they don't make money on albums anymore.

    One of the Best...

by cookiemonster on 7/2/09House of Blues - Sunset Strip - Hollywood

I've seen Mos Def about a dozen times and every single show has always been more amazing than the last. He always takes it back to his classic Black On Both Sides and even his Black Star material with suprise appearances sometimes from Talib Kweli. His shows are one of the few hip hop shows that manages to get the crowd excited from beginning to end. I can't wait until he tours again for his new album, The Ecstatic - his best material since his first. HIGHLY recommended!
