MOS DEF / YASIIN BEY IN CONCERT:

As one of hip hop's most revered lyricists, Mos Def never ceases to surprise and impress with his dexterous flow. On stage, he cuts a stylish figure, effortlessly displaying his wordsmithing skills, charismatic energy, and boundless positivity while paying tribute to cultural icons like Mohammed Ali. Whether performing with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli or rolling solo, Mos makes sure crowds are bumped, grinded, and fully educated in the "fundamental mathematics" of his intricate verses, laying it down as only he can on tracks like "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Body Rock." With a highly anticipated new album in the works, Mos will treat fans to another dose of cerebral hip hop on his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dante Terrell Smith, best known by his stage names Mos Def and Yasiin Bey, is a Brooklyn-born rapper, actor, and producer. His hip hop career began in the early '90s with local alt-rappers Da Bush Babees and De La Soul, with whom he collaborated before releasing his debut single "Universal Magnetic." In 1998, he teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the duo Black Star, whose debut LP is considered a contemporary classic and major influence over the "backpack rap" scene. As a solo artist, Mos Def has released four albums to critical and commercial acclaim, firmly establishing his reputation as one of the genre's most stylish lyricists. Reuniting with Talib Kweli for several highly anticipated Black Star shows in 2014, Mos has fans eagerly awaiting more as rumors of new material mount.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"This was a dreamy, uplifting, soul-satisfying, freaky, funky time well spent!"

"I've always wanted to see MOS DEF/Yasiin Bey in concert. He didn't disappoint... Great energy..!"

"Mos is 100% in the moment and his show was an intimate experience with a nearly sold out crowd of true Mos Def fans. Great ambiance, music, flow -- and who knew Mos could step and dance like he did."

    MOS DEF was great!

by definitelycool on 8/19/09House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

This is the best concert I've ever been to. He went on until 1:30 in the morning, in no hurry to get off the stage. He is just a great hip-hop artist. I wish every artist would play at the House of Blues, with it being a small venue, it was a great vibe. Love Mos Def!

    Mighty Mos came through!

by Mahaffdog on 8/19/09House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

I'd never seen Mos Def live in concert, and I though he was great! The pre-show artist, Jay Electronica, was alright, but Erykah Badu stole the set from him in one fell swoop. Mos came on about an hour later and rocked it for about two hours. He had a great segue going with a drum set and he kept working through his set, hitting all his classics and an extended Michael Jackson tribute, ending with a sweet moonwalk up and down the stage. Erykah came in on accompanying vocals a couple of times but stayed mainly offstage. I was expecting some sort of duet but it never happened. That's cool though, because Mos seemed to have his show worked out and he performed real well. I'd also never been to House of Blues, but it was a pretty cool venue.

    Mighty Mos is Most Definite....

by CharlieMcFly on 8/19/09House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

Mos Def killed the stage yesterday. The show was well worth the ticket price. He performed the whole Ecstatic album and hit on every classic from Black Star and his older albums ( Black on Both SIdes, True Magic, etc).

Shoot me in the head was I at the airport

by shitty on 8/4/09House of Blues Chicago - Chicago

I wish it was a more definite start time. I feel sorry for all the people who showed up at 6:30. Why he would come on to stage at 10:00 is beyond me especially on a Sunday night?? I saw him back in 01' at the Metro when he had Black Jack Johnson behind him. Let me tell you that was a great show. I would of just stayed at home and listened to the CD if I knew it was going to be just him and 2 DJ's. Zero stage presence, could of done w/o the Michael Jackson tribute, and needed to play more of his older hits and other album tracks. I like the "close to the edge" song but after Chapplle show I don't want to see it at a show because it's been overplayed. Surprised that he played a Black Star song too.

    Too much anticipation...

by MaJo on 8/4/09House of Blues Chicago - Chicago

I would describe the experience like this: Mos Def was amazing, the concert was bad. After waiting the requisite hour, the first opening act came out - he was good. Then the curtains closed again and we probably waited close to another hour before Jay Electronica came out...and he was certainly subpar. Engaging the crowd is one thing - stoping midway through each song to converse with the audience with idle chatter leaves much to be desired. He must have stopped a song, mid-flow, with "Hold up hold up holdup....Can I ask ya'll a QUESTION?" five or six times. The only question I had by the end was when were we going to get to finally see the reason we had come: Mos Def! After the curtains closed for Jay Elec., we waited another 45 mins again! By this point I felt like I could have been sitting at home for 4 hours starting a curtain and listening to hip hop tracks on my own sound system and had the same experience. When Mos finally came out, he of course ROCKED! He is a top notch performer, an awesome entertainer, and he ROCKED the crowd! But by the time he finally came out, I had lost most of my energy from standing and listening to mediocre set lists for four hours. Thus: Mos Def = amazing, Concert = not so much.

    the mighty mos

by notsure on 8/4/09House of Blues Chicago - Chicago

he is a great entertainer and the show was amazing. I wish he hadn't started so late. he didn't go on til about 10 even though doors opened at 630. aside from that, the only thing that would have made it better is if he performed my favorite of his songs.

    The Ecstatic Tour was excellent

by DJMellyMel on 8/3/09House of Blues Chicago - Chicago

Mos Def's performance was excellent! It was like a big party. Rhymes, good music, dancing...overall great vibe. The only downfall was the long wait for Jay Electronica to hit the stage. There was over an hour between the opening act and Jay. Some wished to hear more rhymes from Def, but he was paying tribute to the legends that influenced him. (Go MJ!) Regardless, the lyrical night was inspiring, entertaining and worth seeing again! Hussein (opening act), Jay Electronica, and of course, Mos Def...great combo!

    Fantastic show

by princessmila708 on 8/3/09House of Blues Chicago - Chicago

i love Mos Def so there is no way that I couldn't go see while in my city no mater how early I had to get up the next day. Jay Electronica was hot. I saw him last year at Rock the Bells, but it was great to see him in a more personal setting such as at HOB. I love the real crowd interaction both artist has. Mos Def has such charisma and not only is he super talented and intelligent, but so beautiful, in and out. One aspect of the event that was a tad irritating was the long wait time in between acts and then seemed as if the acts had such short time :o(. More Mos would've done well for everyone!

One of the best concerts I have attended. He is real and an amazing artist. The beats are electric and makes your body move, even if you don't have rhytm which some of the attendees were lacking. LOL.

by LPChicago on 8/3/09House of Blues Chicago - Chicago

A lot of positive energy. Jay Elect. did a wonderful job getting the crowd hyped up sharing some of his very thought-provoking lyricism. Mos was amazing. So much positive energy radiating from the stage. Very humble and engaging with the crowd. I would mos def recommend seeing him on this tour. Great time, great music! "Enjoy your life-everyday!"

    mos can do no wrong

by jolove on 8/3/09House of Blues Chicago - Chicago

despite the long wait, i love everything that comes out of his mouth...so it was worth it. though i'm pretty sure some fire hazards were perpetuated...the pushing & shoving could be an annoyance, but once you got into what you came for, no one seemed to mind. the show seemed to end abruptly, but i probably could rock with him all week. lol...i hear badu is going soon, that should be hot.

    Mos is beautiful.

by Sy1via on 8/3/09House of Blues Chicago - Chicago

His stage presence was mesmerizing. His songs are wonderful. The rhymes were tight and he showed so much love to the crowd. The last time I seen him live was at Black August 2005 at the BB King Blues Club in NY. This was my very first time seeing him perform alone and I loved it. He performed so many of my favorite songs and he gave us that new music we needed. He paid his respects to the King MJ so this was a complete show for me as lover of hip hop. Thank you black Dante.
