MOS DEF / YASIIN BEY IN CONCERT:

As one of hip hop's most revered lyricists, Mos Def never ceases to surprise and impress with his dexterous flow. On stage, he cuts a stylish figure, effortlessly displaying his wordsmithing skills, charismatic energy, and boundless positivity while paying tribute to cultural icons like Mohammed Ali. Whether performing with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli or rolling solo, Mos makes sure crowds are bumped, grinded, and fully educated in the "fundamental mathematics" of his intricate verses, laying it down as only he can on tracks like "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Body Rock." With a highly anticipated new album in the works, Mos will treat fans to another dose of cerebral hip hop on his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dante Terrell Smith, best known by his stage names Mos Def and Yasiin Bey, is a Brooklyn-born rapper, actor, and producer. His hip hop career began in the early '90s with local alt-rappers Da Bush Babees and De La Soul, with whom he collaborated before releasing his debut single "Universal Magnetic." In 1998, he teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the duo Black Star, whose debut LP is considered a contemporary classic and major influence over the "backpack rap" scene. As a solo artist, Mos Def has released four albums to critical and commercial acclaim, firmly establishing his reputation as one of the genre's most stylish lyricists. Reuniting with Talib Kweli for several highly anticipated Black Star shows in 2014, Mos has fans eagerly awaiting more as rumors of new material mount.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"This was a dreamy, uplifting, soul-satisfying, freaky, funky time well spent!"

"I've always wanted to see MOS DEF/Yasiin Bey in concert. He didn't disappoint... Great energy..!"

"Mos is 100% in the moment and his show was an intimate experience with a nearly sold out crowd of true Mos Def fans. Great ambiance, music, flow -- and who knew Mos could step and dance like he did."

  • AMAZING...but better

by adiyonne on 9/14/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

Mos Def = very talented artist! He put on an amazing show and all but one of his openers were very good. He is passionate about his art and it is apparent. One of the best shows I have been to and the venue was very cool, good bartenders, food, and atmosphere

  • Blackstar reunion - amazing

by Jimmy85 on 9/13/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Seeing them both on stage together was what I have waited for since I got their album. The venue was amazing, and the whole went great, even started on time (though the last break before Mos came on was dragged out).

  • Rather see him with a band!

by abson on 9/13/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 2 out of 5

Waiting until midnight for Mos Def to start his show was extremely annoying especially since the ticket read 9:30 with the venue opening at 7. Mos brought his usual energy to the stage but I've enjoyed him much much more when he's backed by a band rather than a DJ.

  • Mos Def was mos definitely worth the wait!!

by JovIto on 9/13/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

Show was supposed to start at 9pm. Opening acts came on at 10:30pm. Mos didn't come on until 12!!! Everyone was restless, but as soon as Mos got into his set, it was an experience I'll remember for the rest of my life. Monumental. I don't say that much either, but you take it with a grain of salt.

  • Mos Definately Dope!

by Izzy74 on 9/13/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

The whole show was great. Jay Electronica is a beast on the mic and funny as hell. New kid Husein was aslo good, great production on his music. Mos Def was amazing. The man is not only a great mc he's also a one man band!

  • Didn't Show

Mos kept us waiting forever! It was very unprofessional.

  • Hilarious and Late

by RayRay11111 on 9/13/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 3 out of 5

The opening acts were lukewarm at best. the guy who went on directly before Mos Def was terrible. He actually begged for weed from audience members. We would have been better off with the mediocre music the DJ played. Never has the idea of throwing a tomato on stage appealed to me more. Just terrible!!!! Mos Def didn't go on until maybe midnight (almost and hour after his lead in). Mos did a great job after finally making it to the stage although it was obvious that he was flying high, high, high.

  • Mos Def has so much ENERGY

by Ebeban on 9/13/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

The second Mos Def stepped on the stage he performed on the highest energy level of any concert I have ever been to. He rocked every song he played. His vocals are amazing and his drum skills kept me listening all night.

  • Ecstatic about Ecstatic

by JoeyKips on 9/13/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

Last nights show was great. The opening acts ripped it. Medina Green and Hussein u gotta check for those dudes. Jay Elect u owe me a lighter, this dude is peace, comedic and ill with the rhymes...what we need in Hip Hop. Mos...well what can I say...MADNESS. Mos kept it going for about 2 hours..incredible. All his best from Black On Both Sides, New Danger, Ecstatic, Blackstar and he paid homage to the original artists sampled on his albums. Mos didn't have any surprise guests and didn't need any. Def closed it down with Umi Says...5 Stars Def one of the best Hip Hop shows I've hit up in years...shouts to the engineers who had the sound check on point...mics were clear and beats weren't distorted. If u missed it u missed out....

  • Mos Def carried so much energy

AMAZING! A fantastic show!! Energy was alive in NYC!!!

  • Mos def was amazing

by Brooklynbee on 9/13/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 3 out of 5

While mos def was amazing the show on a whole was only fair. Hussein was amazing. That medina person was terrible. I thought they took him off the local Brooklyn corner. Jay electronica talked waaay too much. The breaks between artist were long and unexplained. Mos Certainly made up for the wait to see him but he could have been all alone for only an hour and it would have been a 5 star show.

  • MOS DEF IS AMAZING!!!

  • Mos Def rocks my world!

by phst76 on 9/13/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

Though it was painful to wait for Mos Def to finally come on stage, once he was on, he delivered a great show. He performed about 2/3 of his new album, the estatic, and surprised us with some oldies and samples. Mos also gave tribute to the king of pop with a great performance of Billy Jean. Always soulful in his voice and dance, I experienced a new level of his artistry from this performance.

  • Mos Def at Governer's Island

by BK09 on 9/13/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 4 out of 5

Great show. Great venue. Mos came on pretty late- so bring your standing shoes...

  • mighty mos delivers

    by mosdefinitelyafan on 9/11/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

the warm up act was enjoyable although can't recall his name jay electronica was an embodiment of disfunction- requiring self medication in order to feel at ease- perhaps this is not his calling On a brighter note, Ms. Badu's performance was entertaining while being informative and making a statement. Saving the best for last-Mos Def was in fact mos def; showing a full range of his many talents, enjoyed the salute to Michael Jackson and duet with Ms. Badu.

  • Talib Kweli: Spectacular

by Tlas on 9/11/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

With some fair opening acts and a stunning performance by Kweli, this show was well worth attending. I have few positive remarks to say on the performance of Mos Def - and was disappointed by the lack of interaction between the two. It felt more like solo acts than the infamous Black Star duo.

  • AMAZING

by Chitown2Bosstown on 9/10/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

I expected a great show...and GOT ONE! Big up to J Electronica...he's got Lyrics & stage presence for days! This is my 3rd Talib show...he NEVER disappoints! And MOS DEF...OMG!

  • Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Black Star was awesome

by EliBlackStatFan on 9/10/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The Black Star album has been one of my favorites for years: this was a once in a lifetime chance to Mos Def and Talib Kweli perform together again! They played their own stuff separately and then did a handfull of some Black Star songs together. It was awesome. Then Mos Def did a version of Billy Jean as a tribute to Michael Jackson and a cool rendition of Leaving on a Jet Plane.... Everyone was having fun it was cool.

  • Best alliance in hip byooooooo!

by loob414 on 9/10/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This how was absolutely amazing. I have never seen Mos def live and from the first to last song I was absolutely floored. Mos's live show becomes more of an act that goes along with the music which in turn makes the crowd feel as if something totally amazing is taking place. Talib Kweli also came out strong and then returned for some epic Blackstar tunes which put the crowd in a time machine and it was like the cd had just hit stores. Next time he comes around and your a fan of the music you cannot miss it

  • Amazing show!
