MOS DEF / YASIIN BEY IN CONCERT:

As one of hip hop's most revered lyricists, Mos Def never ceases to surprise and impress with his dexterous flow. On stage, he cuts a stylish figure, effortlessly displaying his wordsmithing skills, charismatic energy, and boundless positivity while paying tribute to cultural icons like Mohammed Ali. Whether performing with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli or rolling solo, Mos makes sure crowds are bumped, grinded, and fully educated in the "fundamental mathematics" of his intricate verses, laying it down as only he can on tracks like "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Body Rock." With a highly anticipated new album in the works, Mos will treat fans to another dose of cerebral hip hop on his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dante Terrell Smith, best known by his stage names Mos Def and Yasiin Bey, is a Brooklyn-born rapper, actor, and producer. His hip hop career began in the early '90s with local alt-rappers Da Bush Babees and De La Soul, with whom he collaborated before releasing his debut single "Universal Magnetic." In 1998, he teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the duo Black Star, whose debut LP is considered a contemporary classic and major influence over the "backpack rap" scene. As a solo artist, Mos Def has released four albums to critical and commercial acclaim, firmly establishing his reputation as one of the genre's most stylish lyricists. Reuniting with Talib Kweli for several highly anticipated Black Star shows in 2014, Mos has fans eagerly awaiting more as rumors of new material mount.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"This was a dreamy, uplifting, soul-satisfying, freaky, funky time well spent!"

"I've always wanted to see MOS DEF/Yasiin Bey in concert. He didn't disappoint... Great energy..!"

"Mos is 100% in the moment and his show was an intimate experience with a nearly sold out crowd of true Mos Def fans. Great ambiance, music, flow -- and who knew Mos could step and dance like he did."

I love Mos and Kweli and excited for this show for months. Kweli did an ok job of working the crowd but Mos Def was pretty boring and basically sang the whole time. Maybe its just that I'm a bigger fan of his older stuff, but it seems the set list contributed to his not being able to work the crowd.....I left early.

  • Mos Def Was Disappointing

by ShauntheDragon on 9/18/09The Electric Factory - PhiladelphiaRating: 1 out of 5

The show was to start at 8:30PM. Ok - we all know the deal, shows start a little later than scheduled. But this one was ridiculous. First, the hype men were on stage for almost two and a half hours- hello? Then Talib came on and he did his thing; it wasn't the best performance but it was feasible. After he finished, we waited for an hour for Mos Def to come on stage, which he did at 12:15AM. Hello? His show was not good, it was wack. He didn't do his popular songs, well i heard he did some Black Star stuff. I left early but my friends told me it wasn't worth staying.

  • The Mighty Mos Def

by JanineX on 9/17/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

Despite the on and off drizzle and the long wait for Mos Def to come out (he didn't hit the stage until after 12) his performance made everything worth it!

  • My Review

by Logic86 on 9/16/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

I'm a big fan of Mos Def of so when I heard about the tickets I think I got them within minutes after. I think he did almost every song off the new album except one. For the performance he gave I think the tickets were worth more... Esp when Talib Kweli came out so that was also a plus. One issue the bartenders didn't seems enthusiastic about selling drinks moving very slow causing you to miss the show. The doors just opened at 7pm, its only 815, whats the problem? The worst experience I've had at a club thus far. I would pay to see it again just definitely not in Boston where you can't smoke(if you know I mean). So you put it together.. but the show no complaints just the location.

  • cold & wet

by rainsand on 9/16/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 3 out of 5

It would have been a decent show, if it had only been Mos and he didn't make us wait 3hrs in the rain for him to come on. The 3-YES THREE-opening acts were all not worth the time it took to set them up and strike them for the next act, MAKING IT MIDNIGHT UNTIL MOS WENT ON. Mos is awesome but my time is worth more!

  • Mos Def. NYC 9/12/09

by Tasiya on 9/15/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 4 out of 5

Mos Def performance was great, his dancing, his song choices and rocking out in the rain...good times. Jay Electronica is a really good host as he has great humor and energy! But there were too long of gaps in btwn performances! Lets take a moment for Mos on the drums....He killed it, he needs to always do the drum thing or have someone play it if he's tired because that brings the performance many notches up easily!!

  • Dope show! Dope venue!

by ATCQ on 9/14/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

Even though it was raining off and on the entire night we had a great time at the show. Sound system was good. Mos put on a hell of show.

  • Mos is always the Most

by bklynbaby on 9/14/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 4 out of 5

the off and on drizzle was the worst, obviously the ferry crew needs a bit more practice with large crowds, and Mos could use a watch, but all told, it was a good concert. Had all conditions been perfect, The Beach seems like it would be a great venue, and Mos always puts it down.

  • Boogie Man did his thing

by Dizhaman on 9/14/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

I have so much respect for Mos Def. Boogie Man showed us why music is magic, the drums the dancing the vibe. God Bless Boogie Man

  • Mos Def

by troc on 9/14/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 1 out of 5

It was not the greatest. Mostly because we had to wait 2.5 hours for him to come out. There was this one MC that was the worst. He rapped about okey dokey??????????????????. The other two opening acts were ok. By the time Mos came out we were over it.

Hello/ Although I appreciate that the Zephyr(VIP luxury liner) staff were quite professional, I was a bit disappointed with the overall experience upon the ship. It would have been nice if there was D.J. on board and I thought that Mos Def was going to mingle (even if for 30mins.) with guests rather than be roped off with family and management. Also, I would have liked to have received a red band prior to de-boarding at Governor's Island. Unfortunately, many of us were rushed through unorganized security check points, received a purple band and sent on about our business. It wasn't until we reached the stage and noticed a sectioned off area for V.I.Ps that we were told to return back to security to receive a red band (in the middle of the show). Due to the rain, it would have been nice to have a tent set up for the audience. Lastly, the wait was a bit over the top, but Mos Def gave a great show and I felt that I got my money's worth with that portion of the evening. I will return to future shows in 2010, but I probably will not pay for V.I.P. tickets again.

  • SO SO SO LATE....

    by HOPE3 on 9/14/09Gouvernors Island - NYCRating: 2 out of 5

Show started at 9:30pm, Mos did not show until 12 Midnight! No need for three opening acts, we are there to see MOS! Jay Electronica talks wayyyyy too much, as he stated just before he started talking wayyyyyy too much! And it was raining...! I have seen Mos a lot and this was one of the worst I have seen him do it. No guest stars, no Talib Kweli. His drum playing was tight. Singing old songs (not his songs, just old songs he liked) was not... We left at 1am to beat the rush to the ferry, many people had already left by 1 am. Venue is beautiful (you take a ferry to the island). Food is cheaper than I expected.

  • Mos Def

Great show, great venue. It's only every once and awhile a hip hop artist music transfers well on to the stage. This was one of those tims. Mos Def was great.

  • DO NOT GO!!!!

by Jaisun on 9/14/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 1 out of 5

One word: HORRIBLE. I always been a fan of Blackstar where Talib Kweli and Mos Def put on great shows back when I lived In Philly. I took my wife to the Mos Def show on Governor's Island for her first Mos Def experience. It was a rainy day and not one for a concert, but we still expected Mos Def to put on a good show. From an operational standpoint, it was horrible. The security staff had no idea what was going on. Mos Def was half an hour late getting started. He only came out for a 10-12 minute set and that was it. He had some other artists come out, but you can notice that they were prolonging their sets because either Mos Def was refusing to come out or just did not want to. We waited from 10:15pm to midnight and he still did not come out again. My wife and I called it quits and tried to take the next ferry off the island. The secuity staff did not know where to take the ferry back or when the next one was leaving. Fortunate for us, there was a normal ferry for tourists leaving. They allowed us to hop on that one, but i am not sure what happened to the rest of the folks still waiting for Mos Def to come back on since the workers informed us that the ferry we were on was the last one off the island. I was going to purchase the VIP tickets, but thank god I didn't since i would have been even more angry. The show all together was a huge disappointment. I am not sure if I would ever go back to a Mos Def show after this experience.

  • Mos Def, a Definate

by Tade on 9/14/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 4 out of 5

I like Mos Def in movies, and know a couple of his most popular singles, really only like 2 songs, but I went to the concert for my best friends birthday who is a real Mos Def fan. I enjoyed every moment of his performance, and I believe that is saying a lot especially if you do not even know any of the songs. Mos Def is a performer, he is charming, funny, and entertaining. He surprised me by playing the drums during his performance as well. He has the whole crowd singing and dancing along with him. This was also my first concert at Governors Island. NYC smartened up by using this amazing space. It is beautiful, good music on the water with the lights of NYC skyline as your background, you really can not beat it!

  • 2.5 hours late is NOT cool!

by ToraGee on 9/14/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 1 out of 5

Show was scheduled for 9:30pm, on an island accessibly only by boat, and his highness shows up at midnight. Half my peeps left at 11:30pm in disgust. At least let people know you're going to be late.

  • Mos Def a good show

by melles on 9/14/09The Beach At Governors Island - NYCRating: 4 out of 5

The Beach at Governors' Island is a really cool venue. Small crowd, felt almost like we were at a private show.
