About

MORRISSEY IN CONCERT:

Stop me if you think you've heard this one before: indie rock hero and consummate dandy Morrissey is back on tour, and fans can expect him to pull no punches as he continues his reign as music's favorite contrarian.  With his outspoken vegetarianism, erudite literary references, and floral self-flagellation, Morrissey became one of pop culture's most notorious and influential figures in the '80s as frontman of beloved alt-rock band the Smiths, and three decades later he's lost none of his piss and vinegar. Whether he's treating audiences to Smiths classics like "This Charming Man," opining on solo favorites like "The Last of the Famous International Playboys," or debuting cuts from 2014's World Peace Is None of Your Business, Morrissey is sure to dazzle with his legendary showmanship and politically-charged sets.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

British-born Steven Patrick Morrissey was an avid consumer of pop and punk from an early age, performing in several Manchester-based bands before forming the Smiths with guitarist Johnny Marr in 1982. After building a considerable following with early singles like "What Difference Does It Make?"  and "This Charming Man," the Smiths released their self-titled 1984 debut LP to a No. 2 spot on the UK Albums Chart. Three more seminal albums would follow, including 1986's The Queen Is Dead, named the "Greatest Album of All Time" in 2013 by NME. Following the dissolution of the Smiths in 1987, Morrissey made his solo debut with 1988's Viva Hate, topping the UK Albums Chart on the strength of hits like "Suedehead" and "Everyday Is Like Sunday." Over the course of nine more studio albums, Morrissey continued to build on the legacy he began with the Smiths, setting expectations high for the 2014 release of World Peace is None of Your Business, his first new album since 2009's Years of Refusal.

    Still the son and heir

    by zatanna on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Morrissey was great and his live band was truly amazing. I was a little disappointed that he didn't play "There is a Light...", but he made up for it with gems like "Ask", "Is it Really so Strange?", and "Cemetry Gates". The highlight for me was "How Soon is Now?". Even thought I've heard that song a million times, they really brought their A game to it last night. The drummer went insane, playing this massive bass drum *and* and gong. Great show!

Morrissey was too short... the show, not him.

    by BoBo31 on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

The show that he did was good, however he was only on stage for 1 hour and 15 minutes, far too short for a concert. The opening act was really good and played for almost as long. I enjoyed what I saw but wished that he had done more. Overall I'm glad I went.

    Great show premature end

    by givemesome on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

I have seen Morrissey solo and with the Smiths many times. Last nite's show was very good and showed a warming to the audience that Morrissey seems to be moving towards. The only disappointment was the security and stage jumping that caused what appeared a premature ending to the show. I also always want more smiths and classic Morrissey as well. Great venue and a very good night...Thank you Morrissey

    It was ok

    by TicosSF on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Morrissey has quite a loyal fan base but I think that he did not perform as well as he has before, he sang for maybe an hour which substantially less time than others. Overall a nice show but not a spectacular show. I was not wowed and am unlikely to ever get tickets to see him again. I'll stick to the records.

    Morrissey was good but underperformed

    by MartinCCC on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

The event was too short and too few of his better songs were played. It was hard to read the dynamic between himself and his band and that tension was uncomfortable. His voice was strong and well-defined, and his personal presence was very evident; however, at the end of the show I felt I had been slightly cheated. I don't attend the events of my celebrated "heroes" to be white-washed by their new stuff, that material is secondary to me, I attend for the nostalgia and sentiment of their more famous, stirring melodies. And those few "classics" that he played were lack-lustre and uncommitted. So, while I was somewhat captivated by the dynamics of the man, his music, and his histrionics, I was underwhelmed, overall.

    Morrisey at Embarcadero

    by DiamondDave619 on 11/20/09Embarcadero - San Diego

I was at the show and it was pretty bad. I was so looking forward to it, being a huge Smiths and Morrissey fan. It was obvious he didn't want to be there and yes, he left early. Very disappointed.

Hope he's in a good mood...

    by vivahate68 on 10/16/09Coachella - Indio

I've been to several of Morrissey's shows(not as many as some diehards) and when he's is in good spirits, he puts on an awesome show...chatting it up with the audience, lots of handshaking with the crowd. But heaven forbid if he has trouble with audio equip, the venue, stage security, or....he smells meat cooking on a BBQ!! He'll cut his set short and leave us bitter, bewildered and truly disappointed! Cheers -M-

    Hope its better this time

    by seasick on 10/13/09San Diego

Last time Morrissey was in San Diego, he was unhappy with the audio and quit. He kept complaining and left the stage. No encore. From what I heard, other concerts in the tour had similar problems.
