About

MORRISSEY IN CONCERT:

Stop me if you think you've heard this one before: indie rock hero and consummate dandy Morrissey is back on tour, and fans can expect him to pull no punches as he continues his reign as music's favorite contrarian.  With his outspoken vegetarianism, erudite literary references, and floral self-flagellation, Morrissey became one of pop culture's most notorious and influential figures in the '80s as frontman of beloved alt-rock band the Smiths, and three decades later he's lost none of his piss and vinegar. Whether he's treating audiences to Smiths classics like "This Charming Man," opining on solo favorites like "The Last of the Famous International Playboys," or debuting cuts from 2014's World Peace Is None of Your Business, Morrissey is sure to dazzle with his legendary showmanship and politically-charged sets.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

British-born Steven Patrick Morrissey was an avid consumer of pop and punk from an early age, performing in several Manchester-based bands before forming the Smiths with guitarist Johnny Marr in 1982. After building a considerable following with early singles like "What Difference Does It Make?"  and "This Charming Man," the Smiths released their self-titled 1984 debut LP to a No. 2 spot on the UK Albums Chart. Three more seminal albums would follow, including 1986's The Queen Is Dead, named the "Greatest Album of All Time" in 2013 by NME. Following the dissolution of the Smiths in 1987, Morrissey made his solo debut with 1988's Viva Hate, topping the UK Albums Chart on the strength of hits like "Suedehead" and "Everyday Is Like Sunday." Over the course of nine more studio albums, Morrissey continued to build on the legacy he began with the Smiths, setting expectations high for the 2014 release of World Peace is None of Your Business, his first new album since 2009's Years of Refusal.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Mad respect for Morrissey - he sounds amazing live... His interaction with the crowd was great, it was my first time and I fell in love with him even more."

    Morrissey still has it

    by mickster12 on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

while the concert was definitely better for those who knew his entire catalogue (including many b sides), Morrissey still demonstrates why he is still relevant.... intelligent lyrics, fantastic rhythms, engaging performance and the band totally rocked. Highlights.... Ganglord, When last I spoke to Carol, why don't you find out for yourself, Don't make fun of Daddy's voice and of course, the smiths back catalogue.

I was happy that he made up for the april show. Hopefully he comes back and does a Fillmore show like he did a couple of years ago.

    Morrissey Seemed Tired

    by SanFran777 on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

I love Morrissey with a passion. But this show lacked energy. He just didn't seem that into it. The crowd was dull, but they did get jumping a bit whenever Morrissey sang an old hit. Unfortunately, he didn't sing many of his hits. Can't blame him if he is tired of singing his hits, but the show suffered by not including them. I've seen him 5 times, but I think I'm done.

    Sort of Short

    by Joliec on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Let it be known, I'm probably over-generous with the rating. I don't know a lot of Morrisey material, don't know any current stuff, so I was hoping to hear a lot of earlier stuff and Smiths, probably only recognized about 4 songs, but he was very entertaining while he was onstage. he seemed in good spirites, and I know he has been ill. He spoke a lot between songs, recognized audience members who apparently follow him around a lot, shook a lot of hands and for the most part the show was really enjoyable. When he left the stagge and came back for the encore, he implied it was going to be a long one ("are we nearly over or are we just getting started" was what I think he said), but after two songs he abruptly just left the stage, and the lights came up a minute later. NOw, a bunch of idiots from the audience kept jumping onto the stage and hugging him and were getting thown back off the stage by security during the encore, and I don't know if it triggered an early end or if he was only planning to do a short encore, but it was a bit disappointing. The entire set was less than an hour and fifteen minutes - probably one of the shortest shows i have ever been too, and I go to a lot.

Old school vibe...you can't miss this! Really.

    by Kaholomua on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Old school Indie punkish vibe with some delectable eye candy on stage!!! He was very friendly and chatty with the audience and reached down many many times to shake hands.

    Mozzer!!!!

    by misha75 on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Sad that it was sooooo short. His vocals were better than I've heard in a while, but he was winded after a couple of songs. Not too surprising considering the circumstances with his health. I hope he does well with the rest of the tour! Tickets were very pricey at $85 for the floor (I would probably pay anything to see him)... Even so, they should have been cheaper as we were in the back below the balcony and it was pretty far from the stage. Also, the Paramount MUST get their bar/drink situation under control. I missed the opening band and stood 45 minutes in line for drinks!!!! I must have a problem.

    Too Short

Morrisey was awesome as usual. But he ended the concert at 1015 PM. Way too short!

    Morrissey at Paramount

    by leedsfan on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Morrissey and the band gave a much stronger performance than at the Fillmore in 2007. The shame is that the Bona Drag album was completely missing, along with the "anthem" sound that many of them would have brought to the event. Otherwise, the set included very creative choices of early Smiths' songs that matched well with his current style and themes. I would never have thought that I would see Charming Man again (first time since 1984).

    by daveo111 on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Morrissey and his fan base have grown up and joined the real world, and the turn, it shake it bend it but most of all LOVE it. Morrissey was at his adult best, His voice and band were flawless his love for his fans was felt everywhere! The sound system or room sound was awful (no bass) but the band shined through any technical boundaries- Blessings- Dave

Morrissey, YES. Fans on Stage, NO!

    by johnyork1 on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

What a great show. Too bad stupid fans had to continuously climb on stage to get a hug (or whatever they were hoping for). Morrissey was understandably gracious, but more understandable is that he decided to cut the encore part of his performance to one song. Who is at fault? Oakland Paramount security? Morrissey personal security? Who knows, at least we got a little over an hour of great music and a tight band.

    Good but too short

    by JessieOm on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Seems like he cut the show off before it was supposed to end. He played a lot of Smiths songs, I wish there were more solo songs.

    Cranky Devil

by missdixie on 12/3/09Paramount - Oakland

Well, what can I say? Cranky, moody, sarcastic- but he showed up! And let's face it, with MORRISSEY, we're lucky to get that. Didn't hit all the notes and only played for an hour, but he did sing some old Smith's songs and that was a treat. Highlight of the show for me was a delighful rendition of "Why don't you find out for yourself". Oh, and it's always hysterical to see his reaction to the fans jumping on stage to hug and paw him. Brave souls. Who would think that's a good idea???? This is not a man filled with Christmas cheer- if anything, he seems more depressed than ever. But it's Morrissey and he's divine. I got what I expected- all's right with the world...

    Moz was...well...Moz!

    by LibrarianInBlack on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Excellent concert. Opening act, Doll & the Kicks, was the perfect complement to Morrissey. His act was lengthy, covered old favorites & many new songs as well. He dealt well with the stage-rushing morons, one of whom tackled him and seven of whom trampled over a security guard in the aisle. He took it all in stride, and did a perfect job of performing his beloved music. Gracious, sincere, and topical in his comments to the audience between songs, I think he made a real connection with those of us in attendance. For those of you who didn't get to see him, you have my condolences! You missed a wonderful show.

    too little

    by fastereddie on 12/3/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Fled the stage, after canceling the last show, without performing most of his best songs.
