About

Moonchild in Concert

With the Los Angeles trio's richly textured blend of jazz, soul, hip-hop, and electronic music, Moonchild occupies its own special galaxy of sound. It's fitting that the group's members — multi-instrumentalists Amber Navran, Andris Mattson, and Max Bryk — started Moonchild not long after spending a night of stargazing together on the West Coast. The music they've made since 2011 demonstrates both their love of exploration and a suitably spacy sort of effervescence, one that suggests the usual laws of gravity do not apply.

Moonchild's three members first forged a musical bond while they were all students in the University of Southern California's jazz performance program. The band was born when they were touring as a horn and woodwind trio — they tried writing original music together not long after that first starry night. The first song they created — "Be Free" — pointed the way forward with its seemingly effortless integration of musical styles, variously evoking ‘60s spiritual jazz and ‘90s acid jazz as well as neo-soul greats like Erykah Badu and D'Angelo. "Be Free" also became the title track for Moonchild's debut album in 2012, which extended the song's casual feel across a similarly gorgeous array of shimmering keys, sunbursts of horns, and Navran's dreamy, sultry vocals.

Many influential stars and tastemakers were quick to take notice. Among the collaborators and tourmates they soon attracted were Jill Scott, India.Arie, Leela James, and The Internet. And Laura Mvula, 9th Wonder, and Tyler, The Creator have all expressed their love of Moonchild, too. The trio's profile in the U.K. got a big boost thanks to endorsements from Jamie Cullum and Gilles Peterson; the acid-jazz pioneer and DJ included the band's 2014 single "The Truth" in his influential Bubblers series. Perhaps the greatest compliment of all was landing a prime slot performing at Stevie Wonder's annual House Full of Toys charity event in 2012 after the singer heard them on Los Angeles station KJLH and liked what he heard.

Released in 2017 after signing to the British label Tru Thoughts, Moonchild's second album ‘Voyager' sees a further refinement of their blend of neo-soul and new jazz. Future travels are bound to be just as smooth.

They were my first concert experience ever in my life. And truly, I’m so grateful they were my first ever. The venue choice was so intimate and their musicality is beyond ethereal. Amber, your voice is honestly one of a kind. Max and Andris, please keep playing those instruments with your hearts and never stop! I love this group so so much. Cheers and love to them!💛🌻💛

    A TRULY BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE

by MARQ on 4/25/22Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta

All I can say is that you HAVE to see them in person and it's worth every penny. We also paid for the VIP and not only got to ask the members questions, but we also got to take a picture with them. The energy is real and unmatched. Just go for yourself.

    Moonchild

by Diva on 4/23/22recordBar - Kansas City

Moonchild is fabulous. I felt they should have been at a more exciting venue. The Starlight or Kauffman would have personified their sound.

    Love Moonchild

    by J. M. on 4/12/22Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta

I always enjoy Moonchild! The show is always well executed. Their April 2022 show was great! I do think their openers could have been scheduled in a different order. They brought about awareness to a special cause in Atlanta. I would have wanted to see that at the top of the show just to keep a constant flow of music. Other than that, their actual show was wonderful as usual.

by Jah on 4/12/22Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta

This is my 2nd time seeing them and just like wine they get better with time. The show was amazing and there aren’t enough adjectives to describe the vibe that was in the building!! We sang along, the instrumentation was on point as always. The VIP experience was personal and engaging. Groups like Moonchild are rare and hard to come by and deserves all their flowers. I am strongly considering seeing them in another city. Thank you sharing your passion with us!!!

    Out of body good

by Dream on 4/12/22Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta

How do I explain how good this band is? Listening to the clear, rich tones of their instruments and her vocals...it was an out of body experience. It was too good. Just learned they're celebrating 10 years as a band. We need this kind of good music and good vibes in the world. I highly recommend you add them to your playlist and get a ticket when they come to your town!

    Prefer recordings over live show

by J on 4/11/22Irving Plaza - New York

In general I liked the crowd and the overall energy of Moonchild… but musically didn’t end up feeling so special to see them live. I think it would help if they could fill out their band more instead of playing over pre-recorded tracks. Love the music, love the vibes, but the live show leaves me not-particularly-impressed.

    Good vibes all around

    by Great Show on 4/9/22

I thoroughly enjoyed the music. Everyone there was really cool. Didn’t know I was gonna be standing the entire time, but the show was good, anyhow. I couldn’t see much, but I am quite short. The opening act was enjoyable. I thought he did 1 too many numbers. I didn’t stay for the second person - she did a lot of talking- I think there was an interview of some sort. Came back in for Moonchild, and they didn’t disappoint. They sounded flawless.

They gave us a great show, the venue was packed, like shoulder-to-shoulder, but it was an overall great show.
