About

Moonchild in Concert

With the Los Angeles trio's richly textured blend of jazz, soul, hip-hop, and electronic music, Moonchild occupies its own special galaxy of sound. It's fitting that the group's members — multi-instrumentalists Amber Navran, Andris Mattson, and Max Bryk — started Moonchild not long after spending a night of stargazing together on the West Coast. The music they've made since 2011 demonstrates both their love of exploration and a suitably spacy sort of effervescence, one that suggests the usual laws of gravity do not apply.

Moonchild's three members first forged a musical bond while they were all students in the University of Southern California's jazz performance program. The band was born when they were touring as a horn and woodwind trio — they tried writing original music together not long after that first starry night. The first song they created — "Be Free" — pointed the way forward with its seemingly effortless integration of musical styles, variously evoking ‘60s spiritual jazz and ‘90s acid jazz as well as neo-soul greats like Erykah Badu and D'Angelo. "Be Free" also became the title track for Moonchild's debut album in 2012, which extended the song's casual feel across a similarly gorgeous array of shimmering keys, sunbursts of horns, and Navran's dreamy, sultry vocals.

Many influential stars and tastemakers were quick to take notice. Among the collaborators and tourmates they soon attracted were Jill Scott, India.Arie, Leela James, and The Internet. And Laura Mvula, 9th Wonder, and Tyler, The Creator have all expressed their love of Moonchild, too. The trio's profile in the U.K. got a big boost thanks to endorsements from Jamie Cullum and Gilles Peterson; the acid-jazz pioneer and DJ included the band's 2014 single "The Truth" in his influential Bubblers series. Perhaps the greatest compliment of all was landing a prime slot performing at Stevie Wonder's annual House Full of Toys charity event in 2012 after the singer heard them on Los Angeles station KJLH and liked what he heard.

Released in 2017 after signing to the British label Tru Thoughts, Moonchild's second album ‘Voyager' sees a further refinement of their blend of neo-soul and new jazz. Future travels are bound to be just as smooth.

    A must see!

by Nikki on 4/17/23Duling Hall - Jackson

Moonchild put on an amazing performance! Amber, Matt and Andris are super talented multi-instrumentalists, and to be just 3 people in the band, with an added drummer, they sounded like more people on stage. I had the VIP Meet & Greet package, and it was worth every penny to meet them up close and personal. I'd pay it again, because their show was mind-blowing!

    Great Experience!

by MS DIVA Q on 4/17/23Duling Hall - Jackson

Show started promptly at 8pm. The venue and ambience was appropriate. Austin Antoine was a really good opening act. Even the slight mishap, but the flow was seamless. Moonchild was awesome. All of them are multitalented, but Amber Navran was amazing. It's really an art to sing and play different instruments interchangeably. The audience was dope as well. It was a great experience; I'll definitely attend another Moonchild concert.

    Moonchild…AMAZING!

by Bunny on 4/14/23Mercury Ballroom - Louisville

The Venue’s Staff were amazing! There were some hidden cost that were not advertised like a $35 extra cost if you wanted a seat upstairs. We payed for VIP and the time for VIP was not advertised and we missed it. We were given our VIP merchandise.

    Moonchild goes beyond the stars!

by The Ceej on 4/14/23Mercury Ballroom - Louisville

Seeing Moonchild was one of the best experiences to start off my concert calendar! Listening to their fusion of R&B, Soul, Electronica and other amazing styles during the pandemic, I was ready to experience them in person after the “pause.” I wondered if they would have a following in Kentucky. After meeting the group during a VIP session before the show, it was evident this group is truly hungry and want to make their place in music history. But watching the Mercury Ballroom fill up with various demographics, I was shocked so many were captivated by their music. Amber’s distinct, breathy and soulful vocals meshed with the talented instrumentalists Max and Audris…these three gave a show that could rival some of your faves! I was so impressed at the way they would jump from clarinet, flute, trumpet, saxophone and go right back into singing as if it were nothing. They crowd including myself loved every minute of it! If you love good music, especially with instrumentation and good vibes, Moonchild is for you! See them and get to know this band that’s going beyond the moon and stars with their music.

    Revolution Live First Timer

by LaLa on 12/7/22Revolution Live - Ft Lauderdale

From the time I got there until left I had an amazing time. The line was long yes but I've been waiting for this concert for a long time and it was so worth it. Met a few folks, had a few drinks, enjoyed the opening group. Moon Child sang every song I knew on all their albums. Had a blast. Would do it again!

    Ummmm

by Flowerchild on 12/7/22Revolution Live - Ft Lauderdale

Moonchild was great!!! The venue, not so much. The acoustics were terrible! You had to be standing behind the sound guy to make out the artist’s words. For a jazz band, they had way too much bass

This is my second time seeing Moonchild this year and it was amazing. Music farm was also a really nice and organized venue. I did this concert solo and was comfortable, it wasn’t too crowded and an overall awesome show.
