About

Moonchild in Concert

With the Los Angeles trio's richly textured blend of jazz, soul, hip-hop, and electronic music, Moonchild occupies its own special galaxy of sound. It's fitting that the group's members — multi-instrumentalists Amber Navran, Andris Mattson, and Max Bryk — started Moonchild not long after spending a night of stargazing together on the West Coast. The music they've made since 2011 demonstrates both their love of exploration and a suitably spacy sort of effervescence, one that suggests the usual laws of gravity do not apply.

Moonchild's three members first forged a musical bond while they were all students in the University of Southern California's jazz performance program. The band was born when they were touring as a horn and woodwind trio — they tried writing original music together not long after that first starry night. The first song they created — "Be Free" — pointed the way forward with its seemingly effortless integration of musical styles, variously evoking ‘60s spiritual jazz and ‘90s acid jazz as well as neo-soul greats like Erykah Badu and D'Angelo. "Be Free" also became the title track for Moonchild's debut album in 2012, which extended the song's casual feel across a similarly gorgeous array of shimmering keys, sunbursts of horns, and Navran's dreamy, sultry vocals.

Many influential stars and tastemakers were quick to take notice. Among the collaborators and tourmates they soon attracted were Jill Scott, India.Arie, Leela James, and The Internet. And Laura Mvula, 9th Wonder, and Tyler, The Creator have all expressed their love of Moonchild, too. The trio's profile in the U.K. got a big boost thanks to endorsements from Jamie Cullum and Gilles Peterson; the acid-jazz pioneer and DJ included the band's 2014 single "The Truth" in his influential Bubblers series. Perhaps the greatest compliment of all was landing a prime slot performing at Stevie Wonder's annual House Full of Toys charity event in 2012 after the singer heard them on Los Angeles station KJLH and liked what he heard.

Released in 2017 after signing to the British label Tru Thoughts, Moonchild's second album ‘Voyager' sees a further refinement of their blend of neo-soul and new jazz. Future travels are bound to be just as smooth.

    Imagine my Disappointment

by Momster33 on 4/2/22Paradise Rock Club presented by Citizens - Boston

I was so excited to see Moonchild. I have listened to them for over 2 years after learning of them from Tiny Desk back in 2019. I am a huge fan of their music and i was excited to introduce them to a few friends. Imagine my disappointment when the band chose to use their concert to promote a social justice platform that, while interesting and potentially valuable, had no place in a nice escape “night out” with my hubby. I was asked to sit through an interview with a local activist who used incorrect statistics to make his case about black youth incarceration and then spouted what needs to be done in his simplistic view to ameliorate the issue but which provided no real solutions just complaints in the end. And I realize that for the majority of young adults at the venue this was par for the course and a normal occurrence for them - social justice has been spewed at them for years. But it was stunning how ineffective this prostelizatizn is to actually achieve results. Then at the end of a concert where the lead singer, whose ethereal voice was incorrectly mixed for the entirety of the evening, decided to tell the crowd that we needed to “spend our privilege” and donate -monthly- to the organization she had hand picked for us (they guy who was interviewed). What was funny is that there was no place where deets for this organization were disseminated, nor specifics details of where to contribute so it just reinforces my belief that this is “lawn sign” activism at its best and that our upcoming generations lack not only an understanding of liberal society, they have no idea how to actually invoke change to systems that actually work. The concer was a huge disappointment. I am sad that a musical act that I absolutely loved has given me reason to hesitate recommending them in the future not to mention I will always reflect on this show and my view of the band will always have a pallor. I hope people see the utter nonsense for what it is. And go back to just playing music that unites people of any walk of life instead of pointing out someone’s Privilege and white supremacy. How awful

The energy flowing thru the event was epic. I have to see Moonchild and Keifer again. My husband enjoyed himself as well. I play the flute and my husband plays the saxophone. We love that they all play instruments. Epic show.

    It was just exceptional

by Anais on 10/27/19Center Stage Theater - Atlanta

Didn’t know Kiefer was opening for them sooo... that was mind blowing. They allowed someone to come on stage and propose which was ... yeah. Then to top it all off, they made an announcement about standing in the fight To end violence against black and brown people... oh okay. Y’all are clearly revolutionary and I love it. Plus, they sound EXACTLY like their recorded music. It was crazy! Wish I could relive the experience.

    Great & Unexpectedly "Woke" Show

by DJ Lou Styles on 10/27/19Center Stage Theater - Atlanta

Devin Morrison and Keifer were a great compliment to Moonchild. The music was fantastic and the crowd was engaged. The lighting for Moonchild was insufficient (spotlights were non-existent and the stage was too dark for most of the show) and Amber's mic could have been louder but great show overall.

    Nothing short of Amazing

by Ki on 10/27/19Center Stage Theater - Atlanta

This was one of the best shows I have went to. This group is UBER talented, not only are they amazing with playing several instruments throughout their sets, the lead singer kept the crowd actively engaged. Great transitions between songs as well. I was bombed that it ended. I will definitely recommend Moonchild to anyone looking for a EAR-gasmic experience.

    Fantastic Show!

by Rob D. on 10/21/19Brighton Music Hall presented by Citizens Bank - Boston

Brighton Music hall is a great venue; it's not too big, not too small, and practically every spot in the house is a good one. Moonchild is an absolute delight to see live. This is my second time seeing them perform live, and I definitely want to do it again in the future!

    My new favorite band

by T. H. on 10/15/19Brighton Music Hall presented by Citizens Bank - Boston

One of the best concerts I've ever been to. Moonchild is amazingly talented, not only are they an incredible act as a singer and two keyboardists but they each played at least 1 brass or woodwind instrument during the show, and the lead singer managed to get her hands on a sax, a clarinet, and the keys herself throughout the course of the night. I was absolutely blown away.

    Just like the record

by M. D. on 10/15/19Brighton Music Hall presented by Citizens Bank - Boston

solid band very tight, sound just like the record, live drummer was best part, wish she stopped moving away from the mic when singing but it’s part of her sound...no interest in seeing them again
