Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour
Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.
Monty Python's Spamalot Background
Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.
Fantastic show. Great artists and stage production. I can quote the entire Holy Grail movie and wasn't disappointed. So blessed i got to see this show before it ends.
The musical was well done and so hilarious! Loved every minute of it!
The show was performed very well and was really funny, I've owned the soundtrack for years so I knew most of the songs and had to consciously stop myself from singing along. The only detractor is that you can tell it was a play written eight years ago based on a movie that's almost 40 years old, some of the satire (particularly Lancelot's song) was out-dated and overdone.
Wife & I enjoyed it immensely from beginning to end. We initially had concerns that it was "so 1980's", but our concerns were completely unfounded. A wonderful, funny, show, music was great, acting was appropriately outrageous. Go see it.
This show is timeless. It was as funny as the first time i saw it. What a shame that this was the last show of the tour. I hope they start it up again in the furture. This is a show for the ages, but not all ages.I saw to many young people under the age of 12.
This was an amazing show. Even better than I had hoped. I grew up watching Monty Python so was very familiar with some of the characters. It's sad the show is ending its run. I was surprised how many young children were there and believe the show was not appropriate for those under 14 years of age.
Wow, what an incredible performance!! I loved the skits from the original as well as the songs!! Thank you for a great evening!!
I had so much fun seeing Spamalot. This musical is full of jokes that will keep you laughing from beginning to end.
If you love slapstick and really corny jokes - you will love Spamlot! I saw the original production on Broadway, and this one is just as good. Some jokes are real groaners! My husband and I recommend Spamlot! A very enjoyable show.
We don't know of others of our friends and family who may have seen this but, as a longtime fan of Monty Python, I viewed the performance as a wonderful homage. Very highly recommended.
Very funny! Similar but different from the Holy Grail movie.
I was really looking forward to seeing this. It was my first time having missed it several times in the past. The production was amazing and the performers were top knotch. I walked out of the theater with a huge grin and couldn't stop whistling all the way home. This was the last show of this tour, but I'd go again anytime I could to see this magnificent and funny show.
A delightful show that kept a smile on my face the whole time. If you are a Python fan, you will definitely enjoy the show. Although kids may also be entertained, there are several crude words and some crude gestures in the show. I thought the only weak point of the show was the dislays projected onto the clouds or castle doors were not that clear. Also, at one point, you could easily see one of the stage hands in a red shirt & slacks moving some of the set designs during the action. (I much preferred it instead when the stage help were actually dressed as a knight or monk instead.
As always - I enjoy anything Monty Python - the singing was good, the acting was good - I will note that yes - it was the last day of performance and a matinee, but it seemed like they were rushing the lines a bit - but beyond that - it was a good show.
Took my two young adult kids. We all liked Monty Python-Holy Grail, It is "silly". SPAMALOT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. We sat in the balcony...the views and sound were wonderful. I am sorry that this is end of the tour. I missed several other visits to Washington. Glad we got to see this one. ALOTBSOL
We laughed and forgot the cares of the world during this delightfully funny show.
Bloody brilliant as us Brits say. "Thoroughly enjoyed it and the accents were very well presented. Loved it all !!
Lots of laughs. Enjoyed the show. Lots of one liners that were very funny!
The show was hilarious and very entertaining. I would definitely recommend it!
Spamalot was absolutely hilarious! I had actually never seen the movie in its' entirety before and so wasn't familiar with most of the songs, but I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Great production!
