Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.

Monty Python's Spamalot Background

Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.

This was a last minute event for my husband and I. He's always been a huge Monty Python fan. This didn't disappoint.

I have seen Spamalot 8-9 times and it is absolutely one of my favorites. I think the time I saw it was at the Hershey Theater. Just wish they had more touring dates cause I would go again.

  • For the Python lover

Brought back great memories of watching M.P. on the local public channel on Friday nights. The end was a bit sappy, but that might have been sarcasm.

  • The show was absolutely amazing!

    by T. K. on 2/5/19Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Everything from the casting, to the great Spamalot songs, were spot on! My only possible complaint was that no casting could possibly be as good as the casting for Sara Ramirez.

Hershey theatre great venue! We have enjoyed many shows at this theater. Spamalot is extremely funny and entertaining. Saw the show on Feb 1. Lady of the Lake stole the show !

  • Spamalot was superb! Great raucous fun!!!

    by E. on 2/4/19Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

The show was what we need more of, feel good, light hearted comedy! The Donald Trump line in the show really should be scratched, as this is what we all need a break from. This has no relevance in this show. A poor choice...... however, the show was delightful from every other standpoint.

  • 5/5 Fish slaps!

    by J. on 2/4/19Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

The music was great. The songs were hilarious. The cast really seemed to enjoy their roles. We had a slight issue seeing everything because our seats were all the way to right side, but I don’t hold that against the performance. It was great!

  • Enthusiastic performance

  • Well done!

First time in the Hershey Theater. Beautiful facility. Show was well done, great costumes and sets. Cast and crew and orchestra get 3 thumbs up each. Love live theater - seeing the Black Knight's leg come disconnected early made it even more real. Nice job.

  • GOOD CAST - WORKED WELL TOGETHER

by Tom on 2/2/19Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

THIS SHOW CAN BE A CHALLENGE - AS MUCH OF THE (BRITISH) HUMOR ONLY WORKS WELL WITH PERFECT TIMING AND A SOMEWHAT DRY DELIVERY - BUT THIS TEAM OF PERFORMERS - WORKING WELL WITH EACH OTHER BROUGHT THE FULL POTENTIAL FROM THE SCRIPT. THE LADY OF THE LAKE WAS EXCEPTIONAL - AS WAS KING ARTHUR'S ASSISTANT - WHOSE NAME ESCAPES ME. GOOD ORCHESTRA AS WELL - AND THE HERSHEY THEATER IS JUST A PERFECT VENUE!

  • It was an amazing show!!

by Fawn on 1/29/19Scranton Cultural Center - ScrantonRating: 5 out of 5

The stage actresses and actors were superb!! The talent was just amazing. The anount of talent that went into the whole production was great. I loved how the audience participation was toward the end, also. Inwould see it again! This was a Chriatmas present for my Fiance and we were not disappointed.

  • Great show!!

by Kaz on 1/29/19Scranton Cultural Center - ScrantonRating: 5 out of 5

True to the Monty Python comedy, mostly based on the Holy Grail but bits from the TV show as well - and even a subversive touch of topical fun as well. Wonderfully talented cast - all in all, just a wonderful dose of silliness and a much-needed boost in these dark times!

  • Funny, good but not great

by Comedy fan on 1/29/19Scranton Cultural Center - ScrantonRating: 4 out of 5

Lot of laughs. Only thing that was a little disappointing was the ending.

  • Spamalot

by Reviewer1900 on 5/20/13Theatre under the stars (TUTS) - HoustonRating: 1 out of 5

In summary a second rate production, at best. Let me be specific. The set was well done. Very few of the cast were actually "Good". The rest (Including Arthur) could not hold it together some of the time visibly and where in and out of character rest of the times. Some cast members simply forgot their lines all together. It was like watching a rehearsal sometimes. Act 1 was ok, Act 2 an entire waste of our time even for sitting orchestra center. The first time that we felt our money in Houston had gone to waste. Also this appears to be yet another overt and blatant patronage to our good friends the "members of the tribe". As one myself, I was embarrassed to be there. Such a shame to spoil a perfectly good plot with such nonsense of political and religious agenda.. Neither is welcome in theatre of this sort. Spring of 21013 Houston TUTs production. The last time this family will patronize such a place.

Spamalot is simply amazing and hilarious. While true to the HolyGrail movie, it is a great stage adaptation. And the songs .... the best.

Not just a repeat of Monty Python material (although there is plenty of that) - they added more that was on the same par as the original material
