Montreal Canadiens History

With an NHL-record 24 Stanley Cup Championships, eight conference championships, 24 division titles, and a Hall of Fame contingent of more than 50 players and more than a dozen coaches and executives, the Canadiens have an unrivaled pedigree.

The team, founded in 1909 as part of the National Hockey Association (forebear to the NHL), won its first Stanley Cup Championship in 1916. Behind legendary center Howie Morenz, Montreal added championships in 1924, 1930 and 1931. The latter two titles came at the Montreal Forum, the arena they would call home for 70 years. In 1942 the league was reduced to six teams; the Candiens were selected as one of the remaining teams to form the “Original Six” and the foundation of the league we know today.

With eventual Hall of Fame right wing Maurice ("Rocket") Richard anchoring the "Punch Line" with Elmer Lach and Toe Blake, the Canadiens won a Stanley Cup Championship in 1944 and '46. Blake would return as head coach in the next decade, piloting them to five consecutive Stanley Cup Championships between 1956 and 1960. The Canadiens won four more Stanley Cup Championships in the 1960s (three under Blake).

Sparked by future Hall of Famers such as Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden and Larry Robinson, the Habs earned six Stanley Cup Championships in the 1970s — five with Scotty Bowman at the helm. Bowman would go on to become the winningest coach in NHL history.

The Canadiens won six division championships and three conference titles and made the Playoffs every year in the 1980s, adding one Stanley Cup Championship to their resumé when they defeated the Calgary Flames to close out the 1985-1986 season behind the goaltending of rookie Patrick Roy. They returned to the Finals in 1993, again behind Roy, to beat the Los Angeles Kings.

    Disappointement

by Josianne on 9/28/22Centre Bell - Montreal

Very disappointed about how you decide to sale the tickets. First, we were suppose to find a code in IGA but the majority of them was not inform or include in this process. Then, 1909members should have been able to buy tickets before others. The date, that they announced the opening at the exact time, I was on the website and NOTHING, the open presale start 24h after… Of course, only very high tickets places were available… why did you call it « exclusive presale »?

a friend of mine was brought to her first Live Hockey Game. despite her being a Toronto Maple Leafs Fan, she loved attending the game. as much as i wanted to try and point out everything about the players and arena, i did the best i could to be quiet and watch the game as well.

    Free food

by Randy on 12/12/21Centre Bell - Montreal

I waited the whole second period to get the free food in Desjardins club seats. The line didn't move:(. I would have rather just paid for the food. Very disappointing. Oh, and the Habs suck too. lol

I have high expectations for hockey in Montreal ...

by Andrew of Dunedin on 11/12/21Centre Bell - Montreal

Centre Bell is not the old Montreal Forum. So what? The ghosts of past championships aren't as evident except maybe in the banners denoting prior successes and the people who made them. BUT we pay to watch the current team in action, and the staff and facility are first rate to do that. The staff in the street outside are helpful and courteous (I could use those words a lot for every step along the way). Fast and efficient validation of vaccination status (mandatory in just about everyplace I've entered in Montreal and Toronto), security so quick that it almost - ALMOST - didn't seem like we stopped to do it - and a quick ticket scan (although I DO miss paper tickets ... 50 years of ticket stubs rendered obsolete, but I digress ...) I visited 2 souvenir shops and 1 food kiosk (twice), again, crowd control was great and staff was most helpful and friendly. On ice product ... well, the Canadiens are off to a slow start, but the two teams were evenly matched which made it an entertaining game. (Except for the 2nd period, when neither team seemed able or even eager to gain their offensive zone). The visiting Kings won in OT, which meant we got some bonus hockey for our money.

    Fun Knight!

by Trish on 11/9/21Centre Bell - Montreal

I went to 3 games in Canada and this was the best venue of the 3. Gorgeous facility, perfect location. Restrooms are pretty far apart but there are at least 25 in each one so you’re not waiting forever. As a fan of the opposing team, we got some boos but overall, the fans were great. Lots of food choices. And their pregame was entertaining, not as good as Vegas but which one is?

    My First Game!

    by R on 11/1/21Centre Bell - Montreal

I had an amazing time at the Bell Centre. This was my first time watching in person and it was absolutely amazing. Aside from the results of the winning game, the atmosphere and organization at the centre was perfect. I can't wait for my next visit!

    Bad food experience

by Julie w on 10/26/21Centre Bell - Montreal

The hockey game was fabulous and everything concerning specials effect and entertainment was perfect. The problem was that my brother is vegetarian and lactose intolerant so he checked on the bell center website before going to the game and it was supposed to have two concessions with vegetarian options and there was none once there. For my part I paid 40$ for a burger with fries and a poutine and everything was cold.

    Disappointing

by Flopo on 10/22/21Centre Bell - Montreal

Tired of paying that much to watch player who don’t want to play. There was no ambiance at all.
