MJ Lenderman is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Asheville, North Carolina. Blending indie rock and alt-country sounds with plainspoken lyrics and deep sports references, Lenderman has developed his own style across five solo albums starting with his 2019 self-titled debut. After collaborating with Karly Hartzman on Wednesday’s 2018 EP How Do You Let Love Into the Heart That Isn't Split Wide Open, Lenderman joined the band full-time in 2020. He later appeared on Wednesday projects like 2021’s Twin Plagues and 2023’s Rat Saw God. In his solo career, Lenderman gained prominence with 2021’s Ghost of Your Guitar Solo and 2022’s Boat Songs, then followed his 2023 signing to ANTI- Records with the live album And the Wind (Live and Loose!). In 2024, Lenderman unveiled his fifth album Manning Fireworks, led by the singles “She’s Leaving You” and “Wristwatch.” As a musician, Lenderman has backed artists such as Indigo De Souza and Waxahatchee; for the latter, he contributed guitar across the Grammy-nominated 2024 album Tigers Blood and vocals on its lead single “Right Back to It,” which became his first Billboard-charting single.

I saw MJ Lenderman and the Wind with openers Nap Eyes at the Moore in Seattle. I saw MJ at the Salt Shed in Chicago last June. Both shows were great with great performances and sound, and both venues are super cool. The show at the Moore was amazing because the sound was killer and I could actually see the band really well from my spot in the General Admission section. The Moore feels intimate and the crowd was energetic and positive. Highly recommend.
MJ makes good music, but I felt like they shouldn't be playing big spaces. Just felt like a high school talent show. MJ came out and said feel free to stand, and then just paused waiting for people to stand up. It wasn't really an option. Which is fine if the show is going to maintain that energy. But it was just sleepy and boring and now we're all having to stand up with less visibility unless you're in the front. I've seen him 3 times now and the two previous times were at smaller places and great. They just don't have the stage presence for a theatre. But people will keep paying and showing up regardless because the music is good. So who cares, let MJ make the money. Just don't waste yours if he's playing a >1000 capacity venue.
MJ Lenderman and the Wind were amazing. Can’t recommend enough to see them like
This is a great venue!! The sound was amazing. The building is super cool and the vibe is just generally good. It was easy to enter, get food and get quickly to the bar. Plenty of staff helping people navigate out to various modes of transportation at the end. Unfortunately, since I am 5'3"and was in general admission for most of the show I could only see about half of the lead singer's head and sometimes could see the lead guitarist on the side of the stage. I'm from out of town so had no way to know about sightlines in advance. MJ Lenderman and the Wind were so good- I have tickets to see them in September in Seattle so I am super excited to see them again. Went to other shows on this trip where the acts were elevated on stage. If the Salt Shed has done that, it would have been a pretty perfect show.
Wasn’t sure what to expect, ended up being a great show. Glad I went!
Such a good show and I love you MJ Lenderman this review has to be 50 characters so I am typing random words now
MJ Lenderman makes beautifully messy music about messed-up, beautiful things. Highly recommended!
