Miss Saigon on Tour

The latest touring production of Miss Saigon evolved out of West End and Broadway revivals celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Tony Award–winning musical's 1989 London debut. Arriving amid fevered conversations around the topic of immigration, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg's translation of Puccini's 1904 opera Madama Butterfly to the Vietnam War is timelier than ever. The French playwrights' extravagant "popera," conceived between their celebrated Les Misérables and Martin Guerre, has aged equally well on an artistic level. Director Laurence Connor brings realism and immediacy — and, of course, a scene-stealing helicopter — to this tense and tender tale of a Vietnamese mother who chooses to make the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of her son.

About Miss Saigon

Miss Saigon begins on April 29, 1975, the night before the United States essentially ends the Vietnam War by surrendering South Vietnam's capital city. The colorfully amoral pimp, fixer and survivor known as the Engineer (Red Concepción) sells the poor yet virtuous country girl Kim (Emily Bautista) to an American soldier (Anthony Festa), who is forced to abandon her after a night of passion. Three years later, Chris, now married, reunites with Kim and their child in Bangkok.

Reviewing the show's 1991 Broadway debut, New York Times critic Frank Rich lauded Miss Saigon's lush melodies and praised it as "a gripping entertainment of the old school (specifically, the Rodgers and Hammerstein East-meets-West school of South Pacific and The King and I)." With its revival, audiences can again swoon to gorgeous ballads like "You Will Not Touch Him" and "If You Want to Die in Bed," which reflect Kim's transformation from a naive victim of circumstance into a steely conduit of fearless maternal resolve. The musical's contemporary relevance later reaches its apex in "The American Dream," in which the Engineer fantasizes about the supersized life he will lead when he finally moves to America, where the Vietnam War's lessons are still being learned.

My wife and I were amazed at the high level of performance in all aspects from acting and singing to set design and orchestra musicians. Worth every cent. We would see it again in a heartbeat!

    What a Production

by BeeGal on 1/14/20Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San Antonio

I wasn't quite sure what to expect, I had never seen Miss Saigon before so I do not have anything to compare this production to, but WOW! The play turned out to be much more than I had expected. Definitely for adults, definitely enjoyable.

    Outstanding Performance but..

by M. on 1/13/20Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San Antonio

The performance far exceeded my expectations! Unfortunately, my view was obstructed by individuals coming and going during performance even got foot trampled on as one person exited the row. Restrooms are not adequate for the amount of people using the facility. Stood in line during entire intermission. Fortunately, the performance was excellent!

    Saigon

by j.c. on 1/13/20Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San Antonio

Did not care for Miss saigon. I am not a prude or easily offended, however the strong sexual opening scene was definitely not family oriented. There were a number of young kids in audience. There were a lot of empty seats around us after the intermission. A warning or notice about the sexual themes would have been appreciated. I had been looking forward to this play for some time and was surely disappointed. Also most of the dialog and singing was not understandable.

    My favorite.

Such a beautiful, heart wrenching story of love and loss. A glimpse into what we left behind in many ways. This play always makes me think long after. The music is haunting and will stay with you forever.

    Disappointing

by Pdiddy on 1/12/20Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San Antonio

Play was raunchy, upgrade and not suitable for family viewing. We took our teenage daughters thinking it would be a nice experience. Worst play we have seen in the past two years.

    A nice revisit

by Highlanddad on 12/26/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

It had been over 20 years since I first saw this musical. It was a nice reminder with a few twists, or things I just did not remember from when I first saw it.

Sound in Orchestra Section Was Terrible!

by Chaslp on 12/16/19Music Hall Kansas City - Kansas City

We paid for premium seats in Row Y Orchestra and could at best understand 60 percent of the dialogue! I don’t know if this the the venues fault or the sound crew for the production. Just very disappointed to pay $250 for a play we couldn’t hear.

We had a wonderful is evening.

by CLW on 12/15/19Music Hall Kansas City - Kansas City

Miss Saigon was tremendous! The acting, music, and sets were remarkable. The only negative comment would be that some of the singing was too loud, which made the words hard to understand.

    Much different from London

by International Executive on 12/13/19Music Hall Kansas City - Kansas City

The singing was solid as was the orchestra. However, this rendition was CONSTANTLY taking the name of our Lord in vain and singing it made it even more obnoxious and blasphemous. Also, there should be an age restriction for children. I noticed a number of parents taking young elementary school children to see a musical where signs read "Super Pussy" to describe whore houses in Thailand. Not good parenting but also this needs to be warned to parents.

This was my 5th time seeing Miss Saigon.

by Vicki Rae on 12/13/19Music Hall Kansas City - Kansas City

I was disappointed that they added the raunchiness - not necessary to tell the story. Missed “Now That I’ve Seen Her”. Singing was beautiful but if I hadn’t know the lyrics, I would have had a hard time understanding them at times. Still enjoyed it but felt like the producer took the musical down a step. Kim should have taken the last bow not The Engineer.

    Good show (not great)

by Pilot on 12/13/19Music Hall Kansas City - Kansas City

This was the 4th time I have seen the show, 2 times on Broadway. Overall it was a good performance. The Engineer screamed at times and was difficult to understand. The language was rougher than other shows. I didn’t care for the new song Ellen sang in room 317. I thought “Now that I’ve seen her” was a much better song an fit the scene. The venue in Kansas City, Music Hall, was very cold, no heat. People were wearing their coats. That distracted from the show some. Overall a good performance. I would see it again.

    Exceptional

    by Mark Jeffcoat on 11/28/19

Don't believe all of these older people and their stupid reviews. this musical is incredible and exceptional. sometimes the venues have sound and seating issues but that has nothing to do with the Music and Talent of the cast. GO SEE IT.

    Well-Crafted and Heart Touching

by Mrs B on 11/22/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

This play was all that I expected. Although the strong language and simulated sex in the bar scenes might be off-putting to some, they provided a sense of reality that could not have been better shared. The performers were wonderful and gave us a sense of how ethically the entire Vietnam war and its aftermath affected nations.
