Miss Saigon on Tour

The latest touring production of Miss Saigon evolved out of West End and Broadway revivals celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Tony Award–winning musical's 1989 London debut. Arriving amid fevered conversations around the topic of immigration, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg's translation of Puccini's 1904 opera Madama Butterfly to the Vietnam War is timelier than ever. The French playwrights' extravagant "popera," conceived between their celebrated Les Misérables and Martin Guerre, has aged equally well on an artistic level. Director Laurence Connor brings realism and immediacy — and, of course, a scene-stealing helicopter — to this tense and tender tale of a Vietnamese mother who chooses to make the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of her son.

About Miss Saigon

Miss Saigon begins on April 29, 1975, the night before the United States essentially ends the Vietnam War by surrendering South Vietnam's capital city. The colorfully amoral pimp, fixer and survivor known as the Engineer (Red Concepción) sells the poor yet virtuous country girl Kim (Emily Bautista) to an American soldier (Anthony Festa), who is forced to abandon her after a night of passion. Three years later, Chris, now married, reunites with Kim and their child in Bangkok.

Reviewing the show's 1991 Broadway debut, New York Times critic Frank Rich lauded Miss Saigon's lush melodies and praised it as "a gripping entertainment of the old school (specifically, the Rodgers and Hammerstein East-meets-West school of South Pacific and The King and I)." With its revival, audiences can again swoon to gorgeous ballads like "You Will Not Touch Him" and "If You Want to Die in Bed," which reflect Kim's transformation from a naive victim of circumstance into a steely conduit of fearless maternal resolve. The musical's contemporary relevance later reaches its apex in "The American Dream," in which the Engineer fantasizes about the supersized life he will lead when he finally moves to America, where the Vietnam War's lessons are still being learned.

    Miss Saigon

by D. S. on 3/5/19Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

Excellent story and cast. Very disappointed in the sound system. We were seated in the upper balcony area and couldn’t clearly hear all the singing. Especially when more than one person was singing.

    Great show! Until the end...

by Missy on 3/5/19Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

I cried, I laughed, I had goosebumps all the way to the end! Then the ending... After everythig she did, how strong she was through it all and for what? I think it was the wrong message for the messed up world we live in. Disappointed.

    Phenomenal!

by Jenn on 3/5/19Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

The show and performances were so good! I forgot home much I loved this show - I saw Kim's understudy but it didn't matter. Such a great production - cast was great. Some of the lyrics have changed since the last time I saw the show, I have the music from the original Broadway company so I noticed a difference but no one around me did. The changes really didn't matter - the song that Ellen sings after she meets Kim in the hotel changed, that was my only disappointment but that is only because I have always loved that song it had nothing to do with the performances. Go see it!

Great show but acoustics need improvement

by M. S. on 3/5/19Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

The show itself was very good and the actors were excellent but the acoustics were bad. This is the 2nd time this season I have attended an event at Shea's and it is hard to understanding the actors when they are singing.

    Performance Was Excellent

by DeniseR on 3/5/19Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

Miss Saigon was an excellent production and story. My seats were pretty high in the balconey, which made it really hard to hear the words of the performers. I believe the best experience would be on the main floor (orchestra) to fully enjoy.

    What did they say??

by Margie68 on 3/5/19Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

The show was epic. The choreography was fantastic. The content was moving. But.... the sound was awful. Half the time my husband and I could not understand what was being said/sung. We thought it was because we were in the balcony but family and friends on the floor had the same problem.

    Good show, unnecessarily raunchy

by Rob on 3/3/19Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

I’ve seen Miss Saigon twice in the past, and I don’t remember the brothel scenes and language to be overtly raunchy as they were in this performance. Unnecessary and distracting to the otherwise very good performance of a beautiful love story, both between man and woman and mother and child.

    Still My Favorite Broadway Show

by Godiva on 1/30/19DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The updated version is just as great as the original. The cast is so talented and amazing! Wonderful singing! I love the music! "Movie in my Mind and They're Our Children Too." Wow! I cried from beginning to end. This show has everything to appeal to all audiences: drama, sex, murder, intrigue, violence, and a slight touch of nudity. The only thing I missed was the original helicopter scene in which we saw the blades overhead and felt the wind from the blades. My memory has the helicopter coming down from the ceiling and then flying over our (the audience's) heads. This show is not for children. When you go, remember to look for the guy with the whip. Love! Love! Love this show!

The cast had amazing voices , the choreography was on point , and the sets were incredible . That being said , and I’m no prude .... but it was a bit odious . I was lucky enough to to see it on broadway , and it was obviously changed . I would still recommend it .

History of a terrible time well done.

    by T. D. on 1/29/19DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I thought the story told the ugly history of Vietnam without being unduly negative, harsh, or judgmental.

    Miss Saigon

by Jerry on 1/29/19DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

This first time we saw Miss Saigon was in 2005. It was great then but they took it to a whole new level with this performance. The cast brought the story to life in such an inspirational and emotional way. We had first hand experiences with the fall of Saigon in 1975. It was a very powerful re-enactment by a very professional cast. Wow!!!!

    Great show!

by Penelope's mom on 1/29/19DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I loved "Miss Saigon!" The singing for the most part was great, the acting and costumes were great! The set design, lighting and special effects were out of sight! The helicopter scene was particularly over-the-top!

    passion even in the nosebleeds

by Maria on 1/28/19DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

We had already bought tickets to a few other performances, and I could only swing the top tier seats for this show. Even up in the nosebleeds you could feel the emotions coming off of this cast! I've been fortunate enough to see three other productions, and Emily Bautista is quite possibly my favorite Kim ever. I don't typically cry during Movie in My Mind, but I had tears rolling down my cheeks almost immediately, and as the show went on they just kept coming. I will say that this director opened up on the "beaucoup amour" in the Heat is On in Saigon, and The Engineer was more violent than I remembered, but it makes the entire story seem more realistic and that much more tragic. This is not a production to miss, and I hope it continues touring and will make its way back so that I can get better seats!

    A bit disappointing

by momof7 on 1/27/19DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I'd seen this show on Broadway many years ago! I was excited to see it again. The show was well done but the sound was not good. Several of the performers could hardly be understood and I have great hearing. My husband had never seen it before and had a lot of trouble understanding what was being said/sung.
