About

Minnesota Timberwolves History

The Timberwolves joined the NBA in the 1989 expansion that also brought the Orlando Magic into the league. The Wolves struggled during their first seven seasons, but the arrivals of first-round draft pick Kevin Garnett, general manager Kevin McHale and head coach Flip Saunders signaled a turnaround. The franchise earned its first playoff berth in the 1996–97 season — the first of eight straight years in the postseason — and its first winning record a year later.

In the 1999–00 season, led by Garnett and rookie Wally Szczerbiak, the Timberwolves posted their first 50-win season, the first of three straight years they reached that milestone. But it was not until the last year in that streak that they advanced past the first round of the playoffs.

With guards Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell joining the Timberwolves for the 2003–04 season, the team won their first division title and first two postseason series, eliminating the Denver Nuggets and the Sacramento Kings. They ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Lakers in the conference finals.

After Garnett was traded away in 2007, the team rebuilt around all-star Kevin Love, but failed to make the playoffs during his tenure in Minnesota. They ended a 13-year drought without a playoff appearance by finishing 47-35 in the 2017–18 season, good for second place in the Northwest Division.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Target Center

As the Minnesota Timberwolves play their fourth decade at Target Center, the arena is much-changed from the building that first hosted the young franchise in 1990. The Target Center has undergone three significant renovations over the years. The last round of upgrades were unveiled at the outset of the 2017–18 season, with a newer exterior and a three-story atrium over a new entrance, home to the iconic statue of George Mikan.

    Hometown vs Nowtown

by lilmamma on 10/15/09Target Center - Minneapolis

    I'm an Chicagoan and I was looking forward to this game. I enjoyed myself even if it was preseason. The fans were terrific and the game was intense. It was worth it and i'd go again and again if i could. I just wish they would acknowledge the fans in the upper levels. They are important to but are never involved in the free give aways or any of Crunch's fun power throw t-shirt give away's. That would really be a treat if they did that. Overall it was an exciting event and i'd tell a friend/ family...Which i did:}

    Wolves v Da Bulls!

    by Zippy0616 on 10/15/09Target Center - Minneapolis

The Wolves started slow, but got themselves in there. It was a fun game and my kids had a lot of fun. The seats were actually pretty good. We weren't court side but that's what you get with upper deck.

Twolves preseason game against the Bulls

by Anonymous on 10/15/09Target Center - Minneapolis

This game was pretty lively. The score was close, the crowd was energized and both teams played a great, competitive game of basketball for the crowd. Crunch was entertaining as always and was so good with the kids who came up to him. My step-daughter was able to get 3 pictures taken with him and she (3 year old) had a blast at the game as well.

We had fun but it was because of who we were with!

    by Stars3 on 10/15/09Target Center - Minneapolis

We had a fun time at the Timberwolves game but it was because of the the people we were with. We have a great time almost every where we go. However the game itself was not that exciting. I suppose winning makes a game more fun (And we were down the whole game.) but there didn't seem to be any excitement with the team. MN needs a good team but also needs an attraction player. One that everyone talks about and wants to come see. We need another Garnett.

    Timberwolves preseason

by Golfcat on 10/15/09Target Center - Minneapolis

The seats we got were very good for the price. It was good to go see all of the new Timberwolves and see how they might do this upcoming season. With the very reasonable ticket prices, I was able to take a co-worker to the game who had never been to one before. I think we created a new fan.

    Up Temple Fine But?

    by Soncar3 on 10/15/09Target Center - Minneapolis

The speed of the game was good but trying to find the right fit needs some tuning. Some players need to work on their freethrows also. I thought at times the REF's were replacement REFs for some of the call's. But overall the kids & I liked what we saw. Thanks for a good game wish we had won.

    No Expectations - Not Disappointed

    by NYLady7 on 10/15/09Target Center - Minneapolis

This was my son's first basketball game, and he had a good time. We all had a good time since the adults didn't expect anything from the game. The last time we saw the Bulls play, it was worse than pre-k basketball with kids who'd never seen a ball before. My beau was embarrassed by my yelling and calling out the Bulls for their terrible play. My only recommendation is to NOT get the hot dogs at the Target Center. They're terrible. Stick to the pretzels and cotton candy. Also, don't bring any large umbrellas, as they're considered weapons and you won't be able to bring them in. A very nice young woman in the Administration offices took our umbrellas for us to retrieve after the game. Target Center is a great facility.

    Wolves showed some flash

    by dl3mk3 on 10/15/09Target Center - Minneapolis

Team started out kind of slow, had a good halftime adjustment and made up a 15 point deficiet. Turned out to be an exciting game and with some playing time the team looks like it can be competitive.

    DEFENSE

by sebrington on 10/15/09Target Center - Minneapolis

They took too long to come back, and wasn't paying close attention to the ball. Should have got more rebounds.

We left at halftime. There was no energy to the game. Not fun at all for the family. I wouldn't go again... and I even had free tickets this time!

    T-Wolves New Era Begins

    by majerle9 on 10/15/09Target Center - Minneapolis

Well, this my first Wolves game in the Post-McHale era. The next couple of years should be interesting, but hopefully fun to watch as Kurt Rambis builds the Timberwolves the way he wants to. I enjoyed it, for a preseason NBA game it wasn't too bad.
