Miami Hurricanes Football History

The Miami Hurricanes are a college football powerhouse with five national championships, nine conference titles and over 40 bowl game appearances, including six high-profile Orange Bowl wins. Founded in 1926, the Miami Hurricanes were independent for much of their existence until the team joined the Big East in 1991. Since 2004, Miami has been a part of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Hurricanes rosters have featured future Pro Football Hall of Famers such as quarterback Jim Kelly, wide receivers Michael Irvin and Andre Johnson, center Jim Otto, safety Ed Reed, linebacker Ray Lewis and defensive tackles Warren Sapp and Cortez Kennedy. Miami has also fielded two Heisman Trophy winners, quarterbacks Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Torretta in 1992. Several of Miami's most successful head coaches, including Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson, went on to coach in the NFL.

The Hurricanes have played in several of college football's greatest games. On New Year's Day 1984, Miami cemented its first of five national championships by defeating the heavily favored Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Orange Bowl. The team secured their second national title in 1987 with an undefeated season that culminated in the Hurricanes dominating the Oklahoma Sooners in the Orange Bowl. In November 1991, Miami won the “Wide Right I” game against Florida State after the Seminoles' kicker missed a game-winning field goal and advanced to the Orange Bowl, where they shut out the Cornhuskers.

The Hurricanes have in-state rivalries with the University of Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles as well as heated intra-division opposition from Virginia Tech. The feud between Miami and Florida State, which dates back to 1951, has been particularly fierce since the ’80s, as the two teams have taken turns spoiling each other's championship aspirations. During seasons when all three Florida teams play against one another, the squad with the most wins takes home the Florida Cup.

  • Bad experience

by Brunosimba on 9/20/11Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 2 out of 5

I took my family to the game. There were more disrespectful drunks at this game than I had ever seen. The levels of alcohol consumed outside the stadium were insane. No place to take a family. My daughters heard more foul language in one night than they will ever hear in their lifetime and the drunks very very disrespectful. If this is a reflection of our society, no wonder we are heading down the drain. To top it off, my car was towed from the spot I parked (no one told me not to park it there and I was just following the flow of traffic) because it was blocking the flow of traffic. No one bother to notify of this and I spent two hours searching for my car. Is that the service you get for $30 parking. I will never take my family to a game at that Stadium again. The prices of everything are making it impossible for the average american to watch sports live.

It was great to see the Hurricanes blow the Buckeyes away! Glad I was able to find tickets through ticketmaster. Was well worth the money for the sports entertainment.

  • Miami fans were pitiful

by mdinos on 9/19/11Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 1 out of 5

It was embarasing how poor of sports many of our Miami fans were. Yelling obsenities, throwing beer cups, starting fights... That bunch of no class thugs will keep me and my family away from any more home games. I'll stick to televised games at home and make a few road trips to out of state games.

  • Way toooo much $$$$ to put with Obnoxious Drunks!

Took my teenage daughters and all we experienced was what drunken jerk UM fans are! Would NEVER consider going to another UM football game!

  • I would be embarrassed to be a Miami Fan!!

by MIAMIFANSHAVENOCLASS on 9/19/11Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 1 out of 5

The Miami fans at this event were awful. I was with my children, (son and two daughters). Multiple fans shouted obscenities and made us feel very unsafe and unwelcome after the game. If I were a Miami graduate I would be totally embarrassed by how the fans acted. Totally no class. I did run into one nice Miami fan at the tailgate. He said when he went to Columbus, although he was cheering for Miami, he was treated with respect, dignity and everyone had a great time. This was not the case in Miami. Again, these fans have no class.

These turned out to be great seats for the game. Go Canes!

Lets start the home win streak anew. Go for the record and don't look back.

  • Great game, but overall cost is ridiculous

    by nomoneyleft1001 on 9/19/11Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

Of course it is always great to see a Canes football game. SunLife stadium is impressive. But, $30 parking is ridiculous. Game ticket prices are also too high. Cheapest tickets were $70. So, two tickets, parking, food, and drinks surpasses $200. Are you kidding me? One game a year is good for us.

  • Go Canes!!!!

    by DANNIC2005 on 9/19/11Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

I am a diehard Canes fan. If we would have lost the game, I wouldn't recommend it to a friend.

  • Fabulous time in SunLife Stadium

by MarvinTheTheatreGoer on 1/17/11Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

UofMiami versus VA Tech football. Miami lost but it was a fabulous game. Seats on south side of stadium so no sun in our eyes. Great tailgating in the parking lot. Gotta come early.

  • Canes game

by sulock on 12/4/10Sun Life Stadium - MiamiRating: 2 out of 5

It was so slow and the announcer was BORING, the game did not get into gear until the 3rd quarter. Unfortunately they (canes) lost, but you still want to support them.
