Miami Hurricanes Football History

The Miami Hurricanes are a college football powerhouse with five national championships, nine conference titles and over 40 bowl game appearances, including six high-profile Orange Bowl wins. Founded in 1926, the Miami Hurricanes were independent for much of their existence until the team joined the Big East in 1991. Since 2004, Miami has been a part of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Hurricanes rosters have featured future Pro Football Hall of Famers such as quarterback Jim Kelly, wide receivers Michael Irvin and Andre Johnson, center Jim Otto, safety Ed Reed, linebacker Ray Lewis and defensive tackles Warren Sapp and Cortez Kennedy. Miami has also fielded two Heisman Trophy winners, quarterbacks Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Torretta in 1992. Several of Miami's most successful head coaches, including Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson, went on to coach in the NFL.

The Hurricanes have played in several of college football's greatest games. On New Year's Day 1984, Miami cemented its first of five national championships by defeating the heavily favored Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Orange Bowl. The team secured their second national title in 1987 with an undefeated season that culminated in the Hurricanes dominating the Oklahoma Sooners in the Orange Bowl. In November 1991, Miami won the “Wide Right I” game against Florida State after the Seminoles' kicker missed a game-winning field goal and advanced to the Orange Bowl, where they shut out the Cornhuskers.

The Hurricanes have in-state rivalries with the University of Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles as well as heated intra-division opposition from Virginia Tech. The feud between Miami and Florida State, which dates back to 1951, has been particularly fierce since the ’80s, as the two teams have taken turns spoiling each other's championship aspirations. During seasons when all three Florida teams play against one another, the squad with the most wins takes home the Florida Cup.

This game was amazing and a true depiction of old school Miami football back on the rise. Th e venue for the hrricanes is tremendous and the parking and access is fantastic. I miss the mistique of the Orange Bowl, but the crowd in here blows it away. I truly enjoyed the ability to purchase these seats on line through ticket master as a b day gift for my son and his brother for this game. Funny thing is, they are Seminole fans big time, but out of respect for Dad they held it down for me since I live 4 hrs away in palm coast,fl. Thanks for the convenience and availability to seats ,see you at the Oklahoma Game

  • Tech vs. Miami

by pbgtechfan on 9/19/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 1 out of 5

We showed up. Too bad Tech didn't. Tech seemed unprepared and out of shape. What is wrong with Nesbitt? I thought our offensive line was experienced. Where was the Tech band? One thing that was not a surprise was how obnoxious the Miami fans were! And $25 to park your car!!!

  • Awesome game!!

The game was awesome. Picking up tickets was difficult so I'd recommend having them sent to you and avoid the will call lines.

Definitely one of the best UM games I have seen and I've been going to UM games since 1975! The stadium is a wonderful venue with comfortable seats, no obstructed views, and great food! The jumbo screens are amazing and the music choices during the game were fantastic! Everyone should experience a UM football game!

  • Miami vs Ga Tech

by FormerSeasonTicketWally on 9/18/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 1 out of 5

Pro - Great Game - good end zone seats buying /printing tickets on line easy and painless Con - why not recommended outrageous parking $25 all tickets overpriced - end zone tickets $65 each with fees no one will sit in the club zone for $360 each (best available) costs too much for college football, especially to see UM vs Duke, FAMU and other weak teams UM had better get a better deal for its fans or it will lose them; better yet build stadium on campus

  • Incredible Night

by FPToledo on 9/18/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 5 out of 5

Great seats; Excellent Event. I couldn't have asked for more.

  • Canes Emerge

by Canesguy on 9/18/09Land Shark Stadium - MiamiRating: 4 out of 5

Many positives from the Canes come out of this game but the most significant are (a) stopping the vaunted GaT running attack & (b) keeping the GaT defense & its big DE sackless.

  • CANES are BACK!
