About

Brooklyn experimental rockers MGMT released their self-titled third album in 2013 while continuing to play headlining concert dates and festivals all over the world. Fans scooped up tickets to hear songs like "Kids," "Electric Feel," and "Congratulations." The band's singular style of psychedelic noise-pop, which integrates plenty of electronica elements, was forged beginning in 2002 by founders Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden when they were freshmen at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Their debut album, Oracular Spectacular, was released in 2006, and MGMT started gaining fans with the help of their opening sets for trend-setting acts like Of Montreal, Radiohead, and Beck. By 2009, MGMT could count Paul McCartney among their growing stable of fans, and they landed a spot opening for the ex-Beatle at Boston's Fenway Park. On tour, the five-piece group has been known to augment the flower-power vibe of their music by projecting repeated colorful, kaleidoscopic images and other random visuals on a backdrop behind the stage.

    INCREDIBLE!!!

by mgmtlife on 4/13/10The Fillmore - San Francisco

I have been following MGMT for over 4 years now, and I've never been able to catch a live show. And trust me, it was everything I expected. The crowd wasn't overwhelming and I was able to get dead center at the barrier (right in front of Andrew!) as soon as I walked in. I've never loved a band as much as MGMT, and although I had to wait over three hours to meet the band members (which kind of did suck), it was worth it. Amazing music. <3

Good show, new material a little wacky...

by Devinoch on 4/13/10The Fillmore - San Francisco

MGMT's new material is certainly less accessible than their older stuff, but the show was good, and we had fun on the whole.

    MGMT at the Fillmore

by caliban on 4/13/10The Fillmore - San Francisco

Saw them last night, I believe they are playing tonight as well. A fun show, but with some caveats: They played a relatively short set, ending right around 10. The last song that they played was "Kids," which is a good one to go out on, but they sang it to a prerecorded track. Weird. When I saw them at Treasure Island a few months ago, they had a much better lead guitar player. That show was amazing. This time around, while it was an enjoyable evening, was not as good.

    Fun show

by troutgal on 4/13/10The Fillmore - San Francisco

A lot of fun. Great crowd. Appreciated that all the music was live, no canned sound. The bass sound was overbearging compared to the rest of the musicians. I'm glad I made the show. Every member gave a great performance. I don't expect to see them in this type of venue again for a long time - they'll most likely be orbiting around the world in much bigger venues. My regret, I could not make their show at Cafe du Nord a few months ago. MGMT GOT TALENT! As always, The Fillmore's staff is AWESOME!

    Lackluster

by tvham on 4/13/10The Fillmore - San Francisco

Lackluster, going through the motions, bordering on boring. That was last night's MGMT show at the Fillmore. This was the second time I've seen them in a smaller venue and both times were forgettable. On the other hand, both times I've seen them at festivals they've put on a much better performance. My suggestion would be to skip them at a smaller venue or be prepared to be disappointed.

MGMT played an awesome show in Prospect Park. All in all the show mixed with the venue was absolutely a great time. I feel that I spent my 25th birthday in the best possible conditions. Great band....great place!

by Rakem5 on 7/4/09Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - New York

Venue is great, lots of cops though, good food doors schedule to open at 5 3- and did but MGMT didn't play till 9 and of course only like for 50 mins. not a lot of songs, so it was a long wait and the opening bands were pretty bad worst moment was when they lip sang KIDS for some reason the band stood up and left all instruments and just lip sang that tune..weird!

    MGMT was eh...

by kish on 7/2/09Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - New York

I saw MGMT a few months ago opening for Beck at united palace theatre in Harlem. That was a decent show with good sound. They played almost every song off their album except for "Kids." I was a little annoyed after that because it seems like if you're a new band, with one album out, you should play your biggest song on that album. Anyway, I thought I would give them another chance so I saw them last night at Prospect Park Bandshell where they were headlining. Well, that wasn't really worth the $40. They did play "Kids" this time. They also played several songs that weren't on Oracular Spectacular, but none of those were very good. They didn't have much stage presence and didn't seem that into it. They were much more entertaining when they opened for Beck, at a seated venue. Overall, I would have thought it was a decent show for $20 or so. It definitely wasn't worth the $40 and I doubt I'll ever go see MGMT again in concert...

    for the love of brooklyn...MGMT

by meri on 7/2/09Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - New York

this concert was incredible, even considering the less-than-adequate opening band, whose set was entirely too long. great weather, good people, great sponsors too! the bandshell was a nice location, we were right next to the stage and it wasn't so crowded to be claustrophobic for a sold out show. MGMT was, of course, unreal...

    MGMT in Brooklyn

by SBdreams on 7/2/09Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - New York

This was my first time seeing MGMT ... after some contact with the band members, Andrew especially and listening to the tunes... I was blown away at the creative sounds and the direction of the band After joining several fan sites, checking out interviews on Youtube and performances I took a chance to do something priceless, fly from Santa Barbara to New York for the show and a chance to visit the sites At the show I got a chance to meet and talk with Andrew, ben and Will... all VERY cool and down to earth guys As for the show, if you have not ever seen MGMT... I highly recommend to see them perform live... Being somewhat a skeptical person, this was by far one of the MOST amazing times and shows I have ever seen! Check them out! ... and if you can't wait fly to see them like I did

    MGMT not so great live

by mna513 on 7/2/09Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - New York

I usually love concerts at the bandshell, but the sound at this show was off, and the band didn't have much energy on stage.

    MGMT was breathtaking

by KristinD021 on 7/2/09Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - New York

I have always loved listening to MGMT but had never experienced them live. My expectations were low as I've been disappointed by a number of concerts in the past. This was certainly not the case with MGMT. I have never said this about any band but they are actually better live than they are on my iPod.

    MGMT entertains its Brooklyn friends

by VicEdee on 7/2/09Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - New York

a beautiful setting - MGMT in their "hometown" Brooklyn, playing to their "hipster" crowd of locals, presented a very competent set of their "hits" and a few new songs. The 3 biggest favorites ("Time to Pretend", "Electric Feel", and "Kids") were well played, and VERY well received by the crowd. unfortunately, their new material, and related "psychedelic" sound does not play well live, and left much to be desired. NOT sure if these guys are "3-hit wonders" or not - BUT they could really work to improve their Live perfromances (especially playing larger/festival-type venues), and their apparent love of "psychedelic sound" is unfortunate, since their "inspired" 80's-style pop sound was so brilliant!
