About

Mesquite Championship Rodeo Live

The cowboy adjusts the hat atop his head, pulls up his boots and boom! The bucking chute flies open and he's holding on for dear life as a bull furiously jumps and shakes in an attempt to toss the rider. That eight-second quest to hang on is what separates the champions at the Mesquite Championship Rodeo in Mesquite, Texas. Since 1985, the 5,500-capacity Mesquite Arena has played host to the event every Sunday from June to August. There's much more than bull riding going down, with each night featuring bronc riding, multiple roping events, steer wrestling, and the like. There's even rodeo classics for kids, like Mutton Bustin', where children ages four to seven do their best to hang on to a woolly sheep, and the calf scrambling chase for kids under 12. The upgraded Mesquite Arena offers luxury suite options and premium seating right in front of the action, along with Dollar Dog nights and the annual Father's Day Rodeo. There's a Fan Zone on the dirt floor where families can head down before the Rodeo for pictures, plus cowboy and cowgirl meet and greets, bull riding how-tos, and pony rides. On a warm Texas summer night, the Mesquite Championship Rodeo is a quintessentially Southwestern activity for all.

Mesquite Championship Rodeo Background

Right off I-635, Mesquite Arena has been the home of the Mesquite Championship Rodeo since 1985, and it has maintained the strong tradition that started in Mesquite in the mid-1940s. Hundreds of thousands of fans attend the Rodeo every summer, and the renovated facility even features a Convention Center, an Exhibition Hall, and a Hampton Inn & Suites. Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars owner Tom Hicks bought the Rodeo in 1999, before selling it to Camelot Sports & Entertainment in 2009. Camelot has continuously improved the facility to include digital video boards over the bucking chutes and the private 8-Second Club restaurant.

    Yee-haw Good time

by Pastor Duane on 6/18/19Mesquite Arena - Mesquite

Our entire family absolutely had a BLAST at the Mesquite Rodeo. Before the event our kids were allowed to go on the arena floor and actually ride the ponies, pet the sheep and a texas Longhorn Bull. Truly a night they will talk about forever. This was on our vacation to Texas from Indiana and was the highlight of the trip!

    It was fine

    by s. on 6/4/19Mesquite Arena - Mesquite

Concert was good, the rodeo was fair. More of a tourist place not the feel of going to a fun small town rodeo. Feel like I'm at the circus and then being indoors also makes it not so fun but appreciate it when it's hot or rainy out I guess. Wouldn't care to go again. Went years ago when it was an outdoor rodeo and it was so different back then and fun.

    Enjoyed it

by PSM on 6/4/19Mesquite Arena - Mesquite

Overall very good, one of the venues wasn't ready 30 minutes after doors opened. Very upset that they threw away snacks I brought for a 2 year old. Can't believe you won't allow toddler to have a few snacks. I had to keep her from throwing away his water bottle. You need to rethink snack thing for toddler in his diaper bag.

    Fun time

    by J. R. on 1/1/19Mesquite Arena - Mesquite

Loved all of the demonstrations and shows that a rodeo can bring! I felt that the seating can be improved and cost was on the high side, but it was fun !

The rodeo was exceptional as usual. We have been attending the final night for several years and it has always been amazing.

    So so...

by NotToHappyCustomer on 8/28/18Mesquite Arena - Mesquite

The show was ok, not sure it was worth the $100 I spent for one adult and 4 kids to attend. The food was not good. Spent $30 something on 2 nachos, chicken strips and a hotdog meal. Stale nachos, cold/hard fries. Seemed like they prepared everything hours prior. Was very disappointed in that. I’ve been a few years back and we enjoyed everything about it but this time was different. The clown that had a mic kept making jokes about being drunk and the cops pulling him over. Not sure that was appropriate at a family event. Don’t think I’ll be going back to another show.

    Family Entertainment

    by BRHS1965 on 8/8/18Mesquite Arena - Mesquite

It is a good event to introduce kids, family, friends, to western rodeo. For the most part, it is wholesome entertainment for all. The clown did say some risqué jokes. Hopefully those went over the younger kids heads and not upset others who took offense. Personally, I don't know why they even did those jokes. It is reasonably priced. The event was kept moving along; not like professional football, basketball with all their commercials and timeouts and baseball's stepping out of the batter box, trips to the mounds, etc. The BBQ buffet for $20, which includes drink (non-alcoholic) is a good bargain but the food itself is unremarkable. The arena is easy to get around but be careful of the slopes on leaving the grandstands to the concession stands. Parking was easy but we did arrive early for the pony ride (no big deal but the granddaughter liked it and that is all that counts); however, getting out was a mess. For a $10 parking charge, you'd think that traffic controllers should be available to direct traffic out.

    The rodeo tradition lives on

by RodeoGrammaw on 8/7/18Mesquite Arena - Mesquite

My daughter's family was driving through Dallas on their way to Ohio so we met them at the Mesquite rodeo. I had to get 4 more seats at the last minute but we were fortunate that they were available. We sat on the very first row so my 2 year old and 4 year old grandsons could see the horses and cattle up close. If you like rodeos, this one is always fun. All the normal rodeo competitions plus the calf scramble and mutton busting for kids. It's good clean fun with a long western tradition. How can you not love it!

    Not quite the same.

by jmutt on 8/7/18Mesquite Arena - Mesquite

Seems that the rodeo is not as exciting as it used to be. Not as many competitors as there used to be. Plus the price of the regular tickets is way to high for the type of seating available.

    Mesquite Rodeo so fun!

    by Loosh45 on 7/24/18Mesquite Arena - Mesquite

We went with 3 generations, all had fun. The audio was WAY to LOUD! So if you have sensitive ears, be warned... Not sure why it needed to be so loud. It lasts for approximate 2 hours. Have the kids wear sneakers as they get to chase a calf around the half way mark. Lots of food and drink options. Fun show and great place to bring out of towners for that "Texas" feel.

I used to come to the Mesquite Rodeo as a kid when I lived in town. Now that I'm in Chicago, I don't get much chance to head out to watch any bull riding or calf roping on a Saturday night, but I guarantee that I would be there regularly if I still lived in town. Everything I enjoyed as a kid was still there... and I loved it as an adult.

    Too short

by jmutt on 6/12/18Mesquite Arena - Mesquite

The events were great but they could have been more of them. One event only had 2 contestants in it.
