Great show, great mix of German songs and American classics like from Cole Porter. Max Raabe does it all. Fantastic orchestre which plays an equal role in the show. Always worthwhile to see, especially next season when there will obviously be a change to an even larger location. His lullaby at the end of the encore makes you weep "Auf Wiedersehen". Interesting to watch the audience - mostly emigrants from Germany or Austria, or there adult children that at least seem to understand the German "Gassenhauer" of pre-war Europe... Max Raabe is an Ambassador of the New Germany. Even Mel Brooks feels so and congratulated Raabe after the show, isn`t that something special...
My lady and I feel that this was the best show we've seen in years. Mr. Raabe, with his perfect 20s affect was exceptional in his mode of host and lead singer, and each of the musicians had complete command of his/her instrument(s). And, of course, UCLA's Royce Hall provided the perfect ambiance.
I have been waiting for Max Raabe & Palast Orchester to return to Southern California. I grabbed the chance to see him. He did not dissapoint. A fantastic stage presents and wonderful voice. The Orchester are all top performers of their craft. A wonderfully fullfilling evening.
This is the fourth or fifth time we have attended a concert with Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester. Not only is Max totally entertaining but his orchestra is top notch. Most of the musicians have been with him for more than 10 years. They perform the fabulous music of the 1920's and 30's with a humorous twist. Even though Max sings primarily in German, his droll explanations in English make knowing German unnecessary. The audience was wildly enthusiastic as was I and the orchestra came back for three encores. The music has truly stood the test of time and the big band sound of the Palast Orchester makes you wish there were still dance halls around where you could fox trot, waltz, tango, paso doble and swing around the room. We will be at Royce Hall next year to see him. Be sure to bring Max and gang back. P.S. We first heard Max at a private concert about 10 years ago, when Yvonne Jurmann, widow of the late and great songwriter, Walter Jurmann, brought Max to LA to introduce him to US audiences. Thank you, Yvonne! Max sang several of Mr. Jurmann's hits on Thursday night - Veronica being one of my favorites.
The quality of musicianship, theatrical presentation, and bold originality of concept all exceeded expectations.
What a fun and highly talented group. I love the blend of suave sophistication and self ironic humor.
This event was marvelous. Classy, distinguished, and humorous. Any time Max Raabe comes into town from now on I will be buying tickets!
This is the second time we have seen Max Raabe at the Paramount. I recommended it to friends who went with us this year and loved it. Max has a fabulous voice and the orchestra has extremely talented musicians. Not to be missed.
Music was really incredible and in the perfect venue. Hope they keep coming back each year - something to cherish.
