    Best Concert Ever

by GalleryGuy on 4/8/17Balboa Theatre - San Diego

I have viewed numerous youtube videos of the orchestra, and I have most of their CDs and DVDs, but being there in person was absolutely amazing. The Balboa Theatre in San Diego is a wonderful venue. I just hope that they return to the area, because I'll be first in line!

Once again Max Raabe and the Palast Orchestra were delightful and we enjoyed another wonderful evening listening to timeless, amazing music. They are the best. Sadly we will have to wait another long year until their return.

Max Raabe - An Evening Extraordinaire

by Schtiehne on 3/5/12Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

For 2 hours Max Raabe and his Palast Orchester mesmerized us. His unique and witty style to announce every song is a treat in itself. Can't wait until his next visit to Los Angeles.

    Max Raabe & Palast Orchester

by Sylf on 2/28/12Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

They are a class act and incredibly funny. Just such a joy to watch and listen to. Max Raabe's banter between songs was super amusing; his vocals unbelievable, the band wonderfully talented and the classy 1920s - 1930's tongue in cheek humor delightful!!! They got 2 or 3 standing ovations from the audience. This was my second time seeing him at the Royce Hall and I might go again...

    Raabe/Orchester are wonderful again

by nbrownlaw on 2/28/12Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

This was our third or fourth time seeing this amazing vintage act, and they are always very entertaining. It's not just a throwback to big bands in Weimar Gemany, but a group of fine musicians with talent, wit and showmanship. Raabe is always the epitome of reserved class while his beautiful voice fills the hall. Save your pennies, because our LA Phil subscription package just came in the mail, and they're playing Disney Hall next year! Mind the directions from UCLA; the 405 widening project definitely impacts traffic around Westwood and the Sunset ramp. Come early!

    Max-imum Entertainment

by StoryTroy on 2/26/12Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

For sheer musicianship, Palast Orchester earned five stars on its own. But with Max at the helm, I've granted the ultra-rare phantom sixth star to this review. Can't see it? Try looking at the screen at an angle. Still nothing? Then track down this act at once and see for yourself IN PERSON why I rave. Max's charming commentary added context to many of the group's selections in a delightful way. His introduction to "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" quite nearly had me on the floor -- not that Max's dry-witted delivery would indicate that he cared how it registered. Top-rate musicianship, lovely vocals by Raabe, and his original "One Cannot Kiss Alone" was a treat to see live.

    Max Raabe does it again

by Anonymous on 2/26/12Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

Raabe and his Orchester are fabulous. His new presentation is continuous with the last -- fabulous 20's and 30's cabaret and popular songs with a great orchestra of superb musicians. The German numbers are fully understandable and amusing because the songs and his manner convey the meaning. The sensational group numbers with extraordinary harmonies and his heart-melting falsetto made me cry. Whenever he comes around, do not miss him!

    Ach. Mein. Gott!

by FraninCA on 2/25/12Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

You see Max and the Orchester on PBS and are delighted! Then you see them all live and there are no words, German, English or Text-ese! He has SO much presence; the group has such amazing and unforced musicianship; and wit? AMG! AMG! I always love the "Lulu" song with the bell-ringing, but when the percussionist did his schtick with the chimes right before Intermission, I had new Max-favorites! I'm already looking forward to the next time they come to town!

Herr Raabe, Come Back Soon, Please!

Thoroughly enjoyable evening. Max and the orchestra were in top form. There were several well-deserved standing ovations that night.

    Transported!

by Sarini on 2/25/12Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

Max Raabe and his Palast orchester was nothing short of magical. His voice was like honey. There were several moments where the entire audience was transfixed under his melodic vocal spell and not a sound could be heard. With over half the songs sung in German, I felt as if I was transported back to 1930s Berlin. The entire orchester was delightful and so talented. I laughed, I cried and didn't want the night to end. After two or three standing ovations, I came home dreaming a little dream of Max Raabe and his Palast Orchester.

Max Raabe was outstanding. I enjoyed the old orchestrations and characterization of the 30s music. I don't understand German but it was wonderful just to listen to Maz Raabe sing. Hope they do another concert soon!
