I'll start by saying that prior to this show, I have seen Jethro Tull in concert 26 times over the last 40+ years. I've been an avid fan and supporter, owning every band and solo album. I will also say that, as much as I've enjoyed seeing and meeting the band, the shows from about 2000 on have been disappointing. The musicianship has been superb and Ian Anderson is an unquestioned genius in my opinion. However, his vocal range and power have been so greatly diminished that it's been sad and at some times painful to watch his performances.
So, I go to see Martin Barre's band this week, and I felt all that excitement and joy I remember from years ago! Martin is as sharp and skillful as he was in the heyday of the band, absolutely ripping out iconic JT solos, and introducing new and exciting arrangements of familiar songs that rocked HARD!
The band featured Martin on lead guitar. Dan Crisp on rhythm guitar, amazinging good and clear vocals, and a recorder on one song. Alan Thompson did a great job holding everybody together on bass and some backing vocals. Darby Todd was amazing on Drums, reminding me very much of Barrimore Barlow in his prime. And as a special treat, the legendary Clive Bunker joined the band on drums and various percussion during the second set. I thought two drummers might overwhelm the room, but the band was flawless and the show was amazing!
I told my buddy that it was the best Tull show I've seen in twenty years and I felt like I was 25 years old again. Really, a top notch performance and at 76, Martin hasn't lost step. He's great!
