MARK KNOPFLER IN CONCERT:

From his days fronting iconic British rock group Dire Straits to his multi-platinum solo career, Mark Knopfler has remained a celebrated songwriter and guitar god beloved for his melodic sense and unique fingerpicking style. Knopfler has been touring regularly since the late ’70, and the decades of experience show – his concerts are dynamic, career-spanning affairs that take audiences on a hit-filled musical journey anchored by his world-wise voice and subtly executed riffs. Whether he’s performing Dire Straits favorites like “Money for Nothing” or singing solo cuts from 2015’s Tracker – several of which were inspired by a trip with Bob Dylan – Knopfler always brings the house down with his electric energy, virtuosic guitar playing, and time-honored showmanship.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, where he was inspired by his musician uncle to take up the guitar as a child. He formed several bands in his teens, and at age 16 he made his first TV appearance performing as a duo with a schoolmate. After receiving a degree in English from the University of Leeds he relocated to London, where he worked as a lecturer at a local college while moonlighting as a guitar player in various bands. In 1977 he formed Dire Straits with his brother David, and the following year the band released their self-titled debut album to a Top 5 spot on the UK Albums Chart. Their next two albums were equally popular, but it was their fifth album -- 1985's Brothers in Arms – that really established them as international superstars. The album topped charts around the world, selling more than 30 million copies and earning the band their first US No. 1 with “Money for Nothing”. After touring in support of the release the band went on hiatus while Knopfler pursued other projects. The band reunited in 1991 to release one final album On Every Street before breaking up again for good in 1995. Knopfler made his solo debut the following year with Golden Heart, a critically acclaimed collection that was followed by a string of well-received albums in the ‘90s and ‘00s. In addition to his rock output, Knoplfer is a respected film composer who has scored more than a half dozen films including The Princess Bride (1987) and Wag the Dog (1997). In 2015 he released his ninth solo album Tracker, drumming up excitement among fans for his next round on the road.

One of the best concerts I have ever attended.

by Chathambound on 9/28/19Madison Square Garden - New York

I love MSG, it is the best venue for concerts. Mark Knopfler and his band were incredible. In my opinion he is the best guitarist today, even better than Clapton... I would see him again in a New York minute... it was brilliant!

    Very few hits

by Ken on 9/28/19Madison Square Garden - New York

Bonnie Raitt was actually better. She had great song selections, kept her stories and band intros shorter. I love Knopfler, and I’m taking nothing away from his amazing talent. But as a paying customer I would like to hear his best known songs. Whenever I see a show, especially at a large venue like MSG, I have little patience for the esoteric. I paid to hear more from Dire Straits, not from his unrecognizable recent ventures. And like I said, it’s not that the stuff he chose to play wasn’t good - but imo had he stayed more mainstream it would have made me happier.

    It was just ok

by Nadine on 9/28/19Madison Square Garden - New York

It was just okay for me. In all honestly I really went for Bonnie Raitt I have loved and admired her for over 30 years. Her performance was less than an hour without an encore. This was very disappointing for me. Mark Knopfler seems to have drawn a big crowd however we left early as he was not on my top hit list.

    This IS a trumpet-playing band!

by Kilkenny on 9/28/19Madison Square Garden - New York

I am not sorry I went but was disappointed that the classics were mostly ignored. A lot of talking, not enough playing. Introducing 11 band members was over the top. 42 instruments? No wonder Sultans of Swing was not performed.

    Ensemble Heaven

by p. d. on 9/28/19Madison Square Garden - New York

Mark assembled an 11 piece band, all virtuosi, and proceeded to explore his British/Scottish folk roots draped in beautiful electric (and acoustic) guitar. Just having visited the Met's Play it Loud special exhibit last week the night's offering was the perfect segue. Quite the valedictory effort. Tx M.K.

    Mark Knopfler is a legend!

by nancy on 9/27/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

Good concert! GREAT music! Thought the instruments kind of drowned Marks songs out. Also thought there would be LARGE projection screens up high on both sides of the stage. Impossible to see Mark or the others. So, good to close eyes and just listen.

Thank you Mark Knopfler and band

    by Scott_Tucson.az on 9/27/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

The set-list included several Dire Straits classics and a beautiful assortment of his solo songs. they did some subtle and a few more distinct variations from the original arrangements and instruments; Spectacular renditions of all! A great group of fantastic musicians!

    All you want and More

    by Sidetrack43 on 9/26/19Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

Mark played for 2 hrs and 30 minutes almost straight through. we were greedy and wished we got a half hour more, but no complaints. The depth of Dire Straits material he played off of Communique was a great surprise. Outside of Romeo and Juliet, I never thought I would here some of those songs live. Once upon a time in the west was a great surprise. we arrived as he had already played a couple of tunes. I may have missed a couple of favorites, but with a catalog so large, he couldn't play everything. It was a concert I wanted to see and have a bucket list item scratched off with this one. The band he has comprised is nothing short of amazing and the venue, it never gets better than the Greek in Berkeley. Truly unbelievable night. Thank you Mark for all the great music.

They don’t make em like they used to.

by JFISH on 9/25/19Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

Can’t speak highly enough about this gig. A mix of some his solo material which is great - and Dire Straits songs, all played by an incredible band of players. The musicianship was “other level”. My only axe to grind is that I wanted a couple of favs (Mans too Strong, Bros in Arms, Telegraph rd) and they never appeared.

    Don't go for the hits...

by M.T. on 9/25/19Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

If you are going to the Mark Knopfler show expecting some Dire Straits hits you will be disappointed. While he did play four Dire Straits songs the only recognizable ones were Romeo & Juliet and Money For Nothing. Noticeably missing was also anything from his Tracker album which was quite good. That all said, the musicianship and the Greek Theater made up for this as we did enjoy the show and Mr. Knopfler sounds better than ever.

Mark Knopfler was good at the Greek Theatet

    by M. O. on 9/25/19Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

Knopfler performed mainly his new album. The songs overall were good. The best part were the oldies like MTV at the end of the program. I wanted more Dire Straits tunes.

Mark Knopfler shows signs of what made him great

by D. on 9/25/19Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

Supported by a large band, Mark gave a good rendition of many of his recent songs but failed to thrill this reviewer who expected more. Of course, Mark is getting on in years and seemed to be having a good time even if he looked tired.

Mark Knopfler and his band were GREAT!!!

    by D. C. on 9/25/19Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

I was not aware of Mark Knopfler except as a Dire Straits member. Only went to this concert because of a casual yet strident comment at another concert by a Knopfler fan. I did not know the library of his works. Well, after about every song, my wife would wonder which "album" THAT SONG was on!!!! We are now HOOKED, HOOKED, HOOKED on Mark Knopfler!!! We do not know the names of the songs he and his AMAZING band played but, who cares??? Anything we add to our playlists by him will be well worth listening to!!! The evening concert in the beautiful Greek Theatre bowl, on a starry, starry night, with the music virtually jumping off the stage at us, only served to enhance our Knopfler experience!!! GO SEE MARK KNOPFLER when he comes to your area!!! Also, go to a concert at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley!!! Wonderful experience!!! Oh, and bring a thick, soft pad to sit on!!!

Mark's mike was too low. He was hard to hear.

by cls on 9/25/19Comerica Theatre - Phoenix

Oddly enough, the sound checks weren't through enough. Mark Knofler was hard to hear. The other mike's were set correctly, maybe the guitars were a little loud. You simply couldn't hear Mark's lyrics, which is the best part of going to see him.
