MARK KNOPFLER IN CONCERT:

From his days fronting iconic British rock group Dire Straits to his multi-platinum solo career, Mark Knopfler has remained a celebrated songwriter and guitar god beloved for his melodic sense and unique fingerpicking style. Knopfler has been touring regularly since the late ’70, and the decades of experience show – his concerts are dynamic, career-spanning affairs that take audiences on a hit-filled musical journey anchored by his world-wise voice and subtly executed riffs. Whether he’s performing Dire Straits favorites like “Money for Nothing” or singing solo cuts from 2015’s Tracker – several of which were inspired by a trip with Bob Dylan – Knopfler always brings the house down with his electric energy, virtuosic guitar playing, and time-honored showmanship.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, where he was inspired by his musician uncle to take up the guitar as a child. He formed several bands in his teens, and at age 16 he made his first TV appearance performing as a duo with a schoolmate. After receiving a degree in English from the University of Leeds he relocated to London, where he worked as a lecturer at a local college while moonlighting as a guitar player in various bands. In 1977 he formed Dire Straits with his brother David, and the following year the band released their self-titled debut album to a Top 5 spot on the UK Albums Chart. Their next two albums were equally popular, but it was their fifth album -- 1985's Brothers in Arms – that really established them as international superstars. The album topped charts around the world, selling more than 30 million copies and earning the band their first US No. 1 with “Money for Nothing”. After touring in support of the release the band went on hiatus while Knopfler pursued other projects. The band reunited in 1991 to release one final album On Every Street before breaking up again for good in 1995. Knopfler made his solo debut the following year with Golden Heart, a critically acclaimed collection that was followed by a string of well-received albums in the ‘90s and ‘00s. In addition to his rock output, Knoplfer is a respected film composer who has scored more than a half dozen films including The Princess Bride (1987) and Wag the Dog (1997). In 2015 he released his ninth solo album Tracker, drumming up excitement among fans for his next round on the road.

This concert had it all... the best lyrics...best musicians, complex instrumenting...and a strong, strong, strong performance. We will still be talking about this performance days and weeks after.

Every band member is an amazing power unto themselves. These guys put on a great show without some of the usual showiness of some concerts.

    Knopfler - Smokin'

by GPDX on 4/11/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

Once again, Mark Knopfler shared his stunning body of work. From the more explicit early work of Dire Straits to the more complex and intricate Celtic melodies, including a wonderful piece not yet played before, Knopler was a Master. Combined with other masters playing with him, as he described them, Knopfler deftly played his series of guitars and warmly integrated the lyrics that provided a warm, smoky feel - like a good wine. Last evening was like having a longtime friend play for you personally. He is beloved and I hope that he keeps coming out to play for a very long time.

Like a fine wine, Mark Knopfler gets better with age. Last night was just magical, we really enjoyed the show and the venue. There was a nice range of musical style on display and all of just outstanding in execution. Great show...if you like Knopfler, a live show is a must...

    Knopfler at his very best!

by PDXBOB on 4/11/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

My wife and I are unabashed Knopfler fans and have been all the way back to the Dire Straits days. We've seen him in Memorial Colisuem (1980's), the Schnitz (a couple of times) and now the Kellar Auditorium. Mark was at his very best last night. New tunes, old tunes, all great songs with an amazing group of musicians. The Kellar did him justice.

Missing the Happy music of Mark Knopfler

by csoul on 12/2/09Red Rocks Amphitheater - Morrison

Lets start writing that I am a huge fan of Mark Knopfler and also of course of Dire Straits. I know that when a guy get separated from his/her original band in this case Mark He has the right to develop his own style but everybody knows that the style of Dire Straits was almost 100% Mark Knopfler... I paid for every new Mark's CD (without Dire Straits) giving the opportunity to listen and enjoy his music BUT I really think that almost all his new music is very sad, slow and I miss the happy Mark with his style in Walk of Life or Money for nothing for example. In the concert (Red Rocks, Colorado) last year the concert obviously focus on his new career and new music. I have no problem with that but again the music is a little bit boring. In fact I use his CD "Kill to Get Krimson" to sleep... is good music! don't get me wrong! but not the one I am going to enjoy in my car in a happy moment like I did with Dire Straits with Sultan of Swing and Walk of Life. When I take a look again to the Dire Straits concerts Mark looks very happy, funny and alive. With his concerts as solist he look tired and sad. And don't tell me that is about his age! because there is several guys older than Mark that still show a lot in their concerts (Rolling Stones for example!). My video of the concert in youtube was banned by the company that represent Mark Knopfler... this is another negative point because I don't use my video to sell anything and is the only banned video of the tons of concerts that I have on youtube of other artists (recorded with my own camera).
