MARK KNOPFLER IN CONCERT:
From his days fronting iconic British rock group Dire Straits to his multi-platinum solo career, Mark Knopfler has remained a celebrated songwriter and guitar god beloved for his melodic sense and unique fingerpicking style. Knopfler has been touring regularly since the late ’70, and the decades of experience show – his concerts are dynamic, career-spanning affairs that take audiences on a hit-filled musical journey anchored by his world-wise voice and subtly executed riffs. Whether he’s performing Dire Straits favorites like “Money for Nothing” or singing solo cuts from 2015’s Tracker – several of which were inspired by a trip with Bob Dylan – Knopfler always brings the house down with his electric energy, virtuosic guitar playing, and time-honored showmanship.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, where he was inspired by his musician uncle to take up the guitar as a child. He formed several bands in his teens, and at age 16 he made his first TV appearance performing as a duo with a schoolmate. After receiving a degree in English from the University of Leeds he relocated to London, where he worked as a lecturer at a local college while moonlighting as a guitar player in various bands. In 1977 he formed Dire Straits with his brother David, and the following year the band released their self-titled debut album to a Top 5 spot on the UK Albums Chart. Their next two albums were equally popular, but it was their fifth album -- 1985's Brothers in Arms – that really established them as international superstars. The album topped charts around the world, selling more than 30 million copies and earning the band their first US No. 1 with “Money for Nothing”. After touring in support of the release the band went on hiatus while Knopfler pursued other projects. The band reunited in 1991 to release one final album On Every Street before breaking up again for good in 1995. Knopfler made his solo debut the following year with Golden Heart, a critically acclaimed collection that was followed by a string of well-received albums in the ‘90s and ‘00s. In addition to his rock output, Knoplfer is a respected film composer who has scored more than a half dozen films including The Princess Bride (1987) and Wag the Dog (1997). In 2015 he released his ninth solo album Tracker, drumming up excitement among fans for his next round on the road.

I was absolutely blown away by the talent of not just Mark Knopfler but his entire band. I was also very impressed with Bonnie Raitt and her band. Great concert!
Excellent concert with Bonnie Raitt opening and getting a standing ovation before ceding the stage to Mark Knopfler. Great backing musicians playing (at Knopfler’s count) 49 instruments across the 14 or so players. They made for a powerful instrumental final encore. Just as powerful was the encore duet Knopfler played with Raitt on slide guitar. Very enjoyable evening’s entertainment.
Having waited for more than an hour for Bonnie Raitt to finish her set( she was brill) we were eager for Mark to arrive on stage. We had already seen him on his world tour in Dublin in May so we knew it was going to be good and he dident disappoint , opening with " waye aye man " the performance was electric , particular highlights were the Dire strait songs but new tracks were played with gusto as welll. The band were extremely talented and played an array of instruments that amazed me. All in all a fantastic night that i hoped woud never end. Please Mark dont wait 4 years again for a world tour , at least every 2 should suffice . ROCK ON !!!
Absolutely phenomenal show! Mark is one of the best guitarists of all time. The fact that he was joined by the ABSOLUTE GREATEST slide guitar player, ever, Ms. Bonnie Raitt, was a huge bonus!
Great show, amazing 11 piece band! Guitar master Knopfler at his best. Bonnie Raitt opened the show with a wonderful band of her own and did a terrific set. I haven't been to MSG in quite a while and they have done many improvements to the venue. Ushers were very helpful and friendly. Overall an outstanding experience.
MSG needs to install screens so that viewers who enjoy seeing musicians faces and expressions can do so.
There were 11 really talented musicians onstage playing multiple instruments. The music was mostly very mellow. The compositions were really well done and resembled a blend of Celtic, Jazz and Rock colorings. While the music was good my own expectations were somewhat disappointed as I thought he might intermingle more of his Dire Straits music into the evening, in particular his more uptempo material. Like Robert Plant, older performing musicians feel the need to grow and perform newer more diverse material than the hits for which they are known. Still an enjoyable evening.
Bonnie Raitt saved the evening for me. A passionate performance with stellar vocals. Being open about my bias, I’m a Dire Str8’s fan who hasn’t been drawn to Mark Knopfler’s solo recordings. In spite of owning a few of them. It goes without saying that he is a ground breaking guitarist. He also has assembled talent musicians. But sorry, for me it lacks the spark of Dire Straits. Too mellow an affair to hold my interests.
Amazing time! Especially love the opening of Bonnie Rait. Felt like had two amazing concerts with one ticket.
Great night of music performed by truly gifted musicians.
This was definitely one of the best shows we have ever seen! If you haven't seen Mark Knopfler perform, go soon! Bonnie Raitt wasn't too shabby either. I loved that at the end Mark called her out to play with him. All the musicians were fabulous and so talented. I also loved Mark's little stories about how he wrote the songs. A not to miss show! Cannot believe how many people have never heard of Mark Knopfler.
All was perfect. The artist, the place, the city...
I’m and my wife are very happy after this event...Mark its best
Seeing Mark Knopfler was a dream come true. It was another off my bucket list.
great band and loved seeing Bonnie Raitt. She has always been one of my favorite artists..and so has Mark Knopfler. His band was outstanding.
Mark is a great guitarist - one of the best, and a terrific songwriter. Enjoyed every song even though I wish there were more selections from his years with Dire Straits. The band was awesome!
The talent this guy has is inexhaustible. No matter what type of music he plays, rock, celtic, jazz, it all sounds great, and his band is amazingly talented as well. Glad I was able to see him on likely his last tour, but his music will live on for me as long as have ears to hear it with.
Fabulous concert! Bonnie was spot on and Mark, he’s just amazing.
The musicians in Knopfler’s band had awesome solos. Knopfler was as good as he’s ever been. Wish the sound was better balanced for some songs. Bonnie Raitt was a surprise to me. She is as strong as ever. The duet at the end was wonderful.
