Marianas Trench in Concert

Multi-Platinum selling progressive pop band Marianas Trench has been big news in Canada for years, and they caught on with US audiences in a major way following their acclaimed 2015 album Astoria, a slick collection of larger-than-life pop masterpieces that showcased their playful lyrical sensibility and knack for anthemic choruses. In concert, Marianas Trench is a whirlwind of emotion and attitude, rocking the stage with adrenaline-filled performances that put their tight musicianship front and center. Frontman Josh Ramsay is a born performer, and his energy is completely infectious as he sings his heart out on upbeat jams like "This Means War" and "Celebrity Status." The rest of the band keeps pace with lively performances that always leave fans thoroughly rocked and ready for more.

Marianas Trench Background

Marianas Trench was formed in Vancouver in 2001 by Josh Ramsay, a singer-songwriter and guitarist who previously fronted the group Ramsay Fiction. He joined forces with Matt Webb (lead guitar), Mike Ayley (bass), and Ian Casselman (drums), and Marianas Trench made their debut in 2002 with a self-titled EP. In 2006, the band released their full-length debut album Fix Me on 604 Records, which they supported with extensive touring across Canada. The album went gold in Canada, but its success paled in comparison to the band's 2009 sophomore LP Masterpiece Theatre, a Top 5 hit on the Canadian Albums Chart that established them as pop royalty virtually overnight. Their third album Ever After was equally well-received, cracking the Top 10 and earning a prestigious Juno Award nomination for Album of the Year, and earning the band the title of Juno Award winners for Group of the Year in 2013. Their fourth album Astoria earned them a 2016 Juno nomination for Group of the Year and unleashed the power ballad Who Do You Love. It also opened up Marianas Trench to the European market where the band toured twice in support of Astoria. Currently in the studio, Marianas Trench is hard at work putting the finishing touches on their 5th album set for release in early 2019.

    Amazing concert!

by Heather on 9/10/19Baltimore Soundstage - Baltimore

Marianas Trench puts on an awesome concert! Their energy on stage is incredible, and their sound is mindblowing. Josh interacts with the audience and actually goes into the crowd while singing. It's a nonstop 90 minutes of fantastic music, great musicians and a band who really appreciates their fans. I've seen Marianas Trench twice and love them and wish they would tour more often because I can't get enough of their music!

by Dia on 9/10/19Baltimore Soundstage - Baltimore

This show was absolutely incredible. I haven’t seen a live band this good in a really long time. Josh Ramsay’s vocals are seriously spellbinding. The venue was very intimate and the openers were also incredible!

by Megan on 9/10/19Baltimore Soundstage - Baltimore

Aside from Soundstage’s technical difficulties, Marianas Trench still put on an AMAZING SHOW!!!! Even in my fifth time attending one of their shows, it was just as magical as the first time. The Unlikely Candidates And George Thoms as their openers were also incredible and really got the party rocking. PLEASE COME BACK AGAIN!!! I’LL BE WAITING FOR THE PRESALE!!!!

    Best first concert ever!

by Jojo on 6/19/19House of Blues Anaheim presented by Cricket Wireless - Anaheim

At first I felt a little out of place but after a while I was able to enjoy myself. There performance was just stunning! I did not expect Josh to get down from the stage, the way he was able to control the crowd, pausing the song to connect with everyone. It was an experience I can never forget, I'm so glad I was able to enjoy my first ever concert with Marianas trench!

    Love them!

by Kat Morgan on 6/9/19House of Blues Anaheim presented by Cricket Wireless - Anaheim

I love this band and they always put on an amazing show. Couple that with The House of Blues' amazing sound system and you get heaven. They might have shone light directly at our faces a little more than I prefer, but it wasn't enough to detect from the overall experience. If you like this band or are looking for a good time, these wonderful people are definitely worth your while.

    Great band, better show!

by Chris C on 6/8/19House of Blues Anaheim presented by Cricket Wireless - Anaheim

I realized how little a fan I was when seeing other fans and their reactions. The band interacted with the crowd, both through sing-a-long and actually walking around the entire crowd. They took pause, every few songs, to remind the fans of how important their following was to the success of the band. The music was incredible, the band's passion and performance was exceptional, and the House of Blues staff did a great job of organizing the whole thing.

I’ve seen Mariana’s Trench every time they come to California, and let me tell ya: they never disappoint!! Josh is one of the best singers I’ve ever heard in concert. His range is INSANE! The guys are super sweet as well and always meet fans after the shows. Love them so so much. 10/10 would recommend.

    Great Venue, Incredible Talent

by Maggie Murphy on 6/8/19House of Blues Anaheim presented by Cricket Wireless - Anaheim

I saw Marianas Trench at the old House of Blues in 2015 and was so excited that they returned to the new location! The venue was fun, spacious, and really easy to navigate. The staff were also kind and helpful, especially the security guards who chatted and joked around with all of us who were waiting in line for a long time beforehand. The opening act was DJ George Thoms, who also happened to be the band’s stage manager. He was fun and energetic, and did a good job of catering his music choices to the audience. We loved that he mixed the vocals of modern rap and r&b songs with the instrumentals of classic 80’s alternative hits. Marianas Trench themselves were incredible. I can honestly say they are the most talented musicians I have ever seen live. All of them play their respective instruments passionately and skillfully—and at the same time every single member sings to create the band’s signature, lush four part harmony. Josh Ramsay, the lead singer, had been battling sickness that week while performing back to back to back shows, and incredibly demanding shows at that (the band’s repertoire requires him to regularly belt all the way up to F and G5, and sing in falsetto even higher). But he handled the situation very professionally and intelligently. He shared some of the load of vocals with the other members of the band, especially guitarist Matt Webb, who shone singing solo as much as he does providing tight harmonies. Josh also made thoughtful decisions to hold back and “mix” some of the high notes instead of belting, saving his voice to make the really big moments where he did belt spectacular. His pitch and vocal control were solid throughout, showing he’s a vocalist who truly understands his instrument and knows how to adapt to difficult circumstances. The band also does a great job of engaging the audience, and showing how much they appreciate the support of their fans, both old and new, who enabled them to travel all the way from Vancouver to Anaheim and still play for a packed audience, and who helped this indie band from Canada manage to debut their latest album at #1 on iTunes. At the same time, they were humble and didn’t overindulge in the love and praise of the fans, but kept the show first and foremost about the music, which brought all of us together in the first place. They played all but a few tracks off their new album, Phantoms, eerily haunted house themed and bursting with infectious vocals and instrumentals that sound like modern synth, but are practically all created by Ramsay and Webb using guitar pedals. They also mixed in plenty of fan favorites from their previous four albums. All in all it felt like the audience had an amazing night listening, dancing and singing along, and the performers genuinely had a great time sharing their talents and making the music happen.

    Always fantastic

by Stefanie R on 6/8/19House of Blues Anaheim presented by Cricket Wireless - Anaheim

This show was better than amazing. From their opener DJ George Thoms he got the crowd hyped with a great mix of throwbacks and current hits. He got everyone excited for the boys of Marianas Trench. Marianas Trench is that band that sounds just as good live as well as on their album. They put so much heart and energy into their shows that it’s magnetic, you will find yourself jumping, dancing and singing along. If you ever get a chance to see these dudes GO! You will not regret it!

    Charming

by Adam on 6/8/19House of Blues Anaheim presented by Cricket Wireless - Anaheim

The House of Blues Anaheim was a great place for this concert. The venue was smaller so no matter where you were in the room you were within easy sight of the stage. The band was exceptional live, they sounded no different than their recordings with the exception of some vocal flares Joshua Ramsey would include. The band had tremendous stageside manner and made the audience feel welcome and included. Probably my favorite concert that I’ve been too, and I have been to a lot of concerts.
