MARCUS MILLER IN CONCERT:

Bass guitar legend Marcus Miller has lent his fast-fingered session skills to everyone from Miles Davis to Michael Jackson, but lately it's his solo work that's been bringing the heat. Taking the stage with an unparalleled group of jazz musicians, Miller holds down the groove for the duration of his marathon sets, soloing in turn with his bandmates at shows that often top two hours. Just to give you an idea of how committed these guys are, their encores often extend for up to 45 minutes — a perk fans can expect as the band hits the road for their 2014 tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brooklyn-born Marcus Miller was raised by a musical family that included his church organist father and jazz pianist cousin. By 13, he had mastered multiple instruments and begun penning his own tunes, becoming a sought-after session musician just a few years later. As a session player, he worked with a veritable laundry list of legendary artists, including Herbie Hancock, Mariah Carey, and Frank Sinatra, concurrently playing bass for Luther Vandross between 1981-2007. He formed his own band in the early '80s, making his solo debut with 1983's funk-inspired Suddenly and releasing a score of albums over the ensuing decades. Ever the multi-talent, Miller also acted as a producer on numerous Grammy-winning recordings for artists including Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, and Miles Davis. Back on the road in 2014, Miller and co. are sharper than ever, setting high expectations for their upcoming tour dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Funky and tight, Marcus' band tore through 2 sets that had everyone in the audience smilin', clappin', and rockin' in their seats."

"Marcus Miller and his band were awesome! The drummer, keyboardist, horn section, and guitar all were amazing. Loved the solos."

"Great show and a great band accompanying him. A three hour show, even the encore was 45 minutes. Not a disappointing minute from beginning to end."

  • Marcus, Sweet Marcus!

by DASMAN on 12/14/18Variety Theatre - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Funky and tight, Marcus' band tore through 2 sets that had everyone in the audience smilin', clappin', and rockin' in their seats. As a musician, writer, arranger, and producer, Marcus has made us smile from Michael Jackson to Herbie Hancock to Wayne Shorter to McCoy Tyner to Aretha Franklin to Elton John to Luther Vandross to LL Cool J to Me'shell Ndegé Ocello and indelibly gracing Miles Davis last several recordings. This night was no different. Bravo, Marcus, I wish you a speedy recovery from the November 25, 2012 bus accident in Switzerland and hope to see you back in the states soon. Regarding the venue - I prefer assigned seating, but it was great to see the band in a small theater.

  • Marcus Miller is the best!

by HippieForLife on 5/9/18Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time ever hearing Marcus Miller. I was constantly thrilled, amazed, and awed by how great a musician, composer, arranger, conductor, band leader, and entertainer he was! Just see him, words can not begin to describe just how good he is. He is in a class by himself. The only other bassists I would say that about are Jacco Pastorious and Stanely Clarke.

  • Marcus was amazing!!

    by Williamson14 on 5/9/18Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

First time at the Birchmere and it did not disappoint. Very nice place for music lovers. Marcus Miller continues to amaze. I’ve been a fan since the early 80’s. Awesome experience! We really enjoyed everything.

  • The best bass player ever!

by crunchshredder on 5/9/18Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Marcus Miller is not only the best bass player ever, he is a consummate musician. He may also be one of the best bass clarinet players as well. He can play all genres of music, including jazz, funk, rock, and even classical. His solo of "I'll Be There" where he played the bass as if it were a classical guitar was amazing and shockingly original. His concert was simply breathtaking and the musicians in his band were awesome as well. He also is not snobby in that he plays fun funk and pop in addition to more complex jazz to make the night a really fun night.

  • Marcus Miller and his crew put on a show!!

    by Dug182 on 5/9/18Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

What a great show! These guys give you more than what you pay for! I went to the show with my Uncle and we were blown away! Marcus is a bad dude and he know’s it, yet humble at the same time. We’ll definitely catch him again when he’s in the DMV. Excellent!

  • Class Act.

by CUatnextcoolevent on 2/24/18cruise - waterRating: 5 out of 5

Just got off the smooth jazz cruise. A true humble , pleasant, sweet guy with loads of talent. He is good looking too and crazy about his music. Its hard not to enjoy what he has to say about music and equally hard not to watch and listen with pure pleasure. Play that funky bass man!!!!!!!! So proud of his excellence which is consistent. I will see him locally, its worth another treat and I'll be back on smooth jazz cruise 2020. Not to enjoy him means you just don't know your music. I am a piano player and music was my minor in college. It was fun ending the cruise with "Da butt."" (created by Marcus Miller among , only God knows how many songs he has written.) :0)

  • Marcus Miller - An Absolute Experience

    by Kakkie1 on 4/11/17Berks Jazz Fest - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

If you want an enjoyable, memorable experience, go to a Marcus Miller concert. I call it an "Experience" because with each selection, it's almost like a crescendo, not in loudness, but in the music you're experiencing and enjoying. You're not just listening, per se, but you find yourself engulfed, with each selection getting better and better, in it's own way. This was my first time seeing Marcus Miller, but I can honestly tell you, it will not be my last. As a plus, the musicians on stage backing him up, are top-rated as well. Do yourself a favor. If you ever see tickets for his show, buy them immediately. I can almost guarantee, you will be going back for more -- just like I will be doing as well.

  • Marcus Miller turns it out - again

by jessej on 4/11/17Berks Jazz Fest - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

I was surprised to hear that this was Marcus Miller's first time to the Berks Jazz Festival but i am sure it was not his last. It was a fantastic show with an appreciative crowd that bought in back out for an encore featuring Detroit, then melded in with Blast. Marcus highllighted the significance of 2 of his songs, with the story of his father and the dedication of Preacher's Kid almost bring him to tears as well as most of the audience. Funniest moment of the show was in the Mowtown set when he said the father of his drummer was not even born when Papa was a Rolling stone first came out. Marcus is doing what Miles did for him, he has a young band of fantastic musicians, who are aprrencticing in the world of Jazz, Saxophonist Alex Han has been with him at least 3 years, but I think all the other band members are relatively new. Everyone shuld check him out when he tours near you.

On a rare occasion you might think that you are in the dead of night.... But the sun is shinning bright and you can feel the warmth of it's rays.... That was exactly what happened at the Marcus Miller Concert at the Berks Jazz Fest. I drove over two hundred miles and every mile driven was worth it....
