MARCUS MILLER IN CONCERT:
Bass guitar legend Marcus Miller has lent his fast-fingered session skills to everyone from Miles Davis to Michael Jackson, but lately it's his solo work that's been bringing the heat. Taking the stage with an unparalleled group of jazz musicians, Miller holds down the groove for the duration of his marathon sets, soloing in turn with his bandmates at shows that often top two hours. Just to give you an idea of how committed these guys are, their encores often extend for up to 45 minutes — a perk fans can expect as the band hits the road for their 2014 tour.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Brooklyn-born Marcus Miller was raised by a musical family that included his church organist father and jazz pianist cousin. By 13, he had mastered multiple instruments and begun penning his own tunes, becoming a sought-after session musician just a few years later. As a session player, he worked with a veritable laundry list of legendary artists, including Herbie Hancock, Mariah Carey, and Frank Sinatra, concurrently playing bass for Luther Vandross between 1981-2007. He formed his own band in the early '80s, making his solo debut with 1983's funk-inspired Suddenly and releasing a score of albums over the ensuing decades. Ever the multi-talent, Miller also acted as a producer on numerous Grammy-winning recordings for artists including Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, and Miles Davis. Back on the road in 2014, Miller and co. are sharper than ever, setting high expectations for their upcoming tour dates.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"Funky and tight, Marcus' band tore through 2 sets that had everyone in the audience smilin', clappin', and rockin' in their seats."
"Marcus Miller and his band were awesome! The drummer, keyboardist, horn section, and guitar all were amazing. Loved the solos."
"Great show and a great band accompanying him. A three hour show, even the encore was 45 minutes. Not a disappointing minute from beginning to end."

Supburb musicians. The featured solos are as good as it gets. Marcus is fantastic up close and personal at the birchmere. And if that weren't enough...EU joins for Da BUTT as an encore!
Outstanding enjoyed to the fullest I always try to see my favorite bass player
excellent as a bass player for 50 years i ordered a bass my marcus
As usual he put on an excellent show and it was wonderful to see how he allowed the other musicians to shine during the performance. He spent time talking to and responding to the audience throughout. The band took a 20 minute well deserved break and came back on to finish off the night. It's been a few years since I had seen him perform and I'm glad that I took the time to see him here as he chose to include Atlanta once again as one of his tour dates. 5 star (Amazing) rating from me!
This was my first time attending an event at the Variety Playhouse, and I must say it was a wonder experience! The performance was GREAT! The audience was perfect for this venue. Great Crowd, Great Drinks and an even GREATER PERFORMANCE. i will attend future events and recommend to others.
Hope he comes back tomorrow, I will be there. First time I have seen him, but it won't be the last.
Every musician in the band displayed complete mastery of his instrument. My boyfriend and I concurred that this was by far the best concert we had seen in a very long time. We are still amazed at the excellence of what we witnessed. They absolutely jammed.
I'm a very big Marcus Miller follower and he continues to amaze me. His talents are unmatched. What I've admired about him over the past few years, is that he has brought younger talents into his camp. The previous album Renaissance was recorded with your musicians and they toured with Marcus to promote their talents and the album, and this year he has released another album which features your guys. But what I love about the new album is that it reaches back to his Roots and fast forwards to todays events.
Marcus and team truly put on an amazing show. The first set was new stuff, the second set old stuff. The latter ending with Blast. Then for an encore they performed Frankenstein. Both featured ridiculous solos by Marcus. He was obviously having a great time. He told us a few times how much he loved seeing the crowd get into it and that it reminded him of playing back home in NYC. Also, the way he and Alex played off of each other was outstanding. Please come back soon!
This bank is the best I have seen in 15 years. Each member of the band is a star in their own right. Can't wait to see them again.
I was afraid that I wasn't going to get a good seat the line was wrapped around the building. But, to my surprise I felt I had the best seats in the house. Even the ease of getting into the building was great. Marcus Miller and his band were amazing, I couldn't ask for a better night. If ever he comes to your city please check him out.
This was my first time seeing Marcus Miller live. The man is truly an amazing musician. HE MAKES LOVE TO THE BASS GUITAR!!!
Traveled to Atlanta specifically to attend the Marcus Miller concert on Labor Day Weekend. He joined a fabulous band of musicians that kept the pace jamming for hours. A great mix of new material and favorites, some improvised sessions and jazzy versions of other great artists. The venue was good, very intimate, roughly 650 people, general admission, great acoustics. Only down side was parking is a major challenge at this location, be sure to arrive EARLY or be prepared for a long walk after scouring for a parking spot among the neighborhood streets. But back to the concert, Marcus performed a nice selection of lively and soulful tunes and unselfishly showcased the young musicians that he had brought along. Alex on Sax was a master! I Look forward to our next chance to see Marcus perform!
This was one of the best concerts I've attended. Marcus Miller is such a talented musician and a musical genius. His compositions are meaningful and heartfelt. He surrounded himself with the best young musicians anywhere. Every single person in his band was marvelous. I cannot imagine going to a better concert anywhere.
great band, great music. marcus did music mostly from his afrodeezia and renaissance albums. one problem, which seems to be consistent at variety playhouse, is that the sound was way too loud. noticed several people wearing ear plugs. will wear them myself next time I go there.
Marcus is the truth. And that sax player!!!! You will regret not seeing him state side! Such a rare treat! He seems rejuvenated with his new cast of players. I've been waiting on him and it was well worth it! Don't deny yourselves. You will regret it! GO SEE MARCUS MILLER!!!
Marcus blew my mind. As a bassplayer myself, it was a revelation to watch the man live with his ACE band. Everybody in the band was beyond gifted. I love how he gave each person in the band a solo in just about every song, and did his bass solo in most songs. What a talent, he combines, slap bass, tapping, fingerstyle, thumb style and some other things that have no name, and does it all. I like his slap forays, but in all honesty, I like the parts where he lays back under the solos as well. My only minor gripe- he had the drums mixed a bit loud, and from my own band experience too loud drums, mean you lose some of the low-end bass guitar clarity. Oh and MM- Bernadette is the best Motown bassline! ;)
MM is a must see. I missed Coltrane and Miles, but I saw Marcus. This show demonstrated why MM has played with icons of the music world. He was more than just a showman he was a virtuoso/maestro/conductor combined. He relates well with the audience on how his travels inspires his songs. His talent and that of the band is far superior than most I've seen and I've seen quite a few shows from jazz to pop to classical. My wife and I were thoroughly impressed.
OMG!!! Marcus Miller is just as exciting to watch in person as he is watching him on YouTube. I thoroughly enjoyed his show. He did several tunes from his new CD and a medley of funky Motown basslines. It was AWESOME. I can't believe he's never been to Houston before. Looking forward to him coming back.
