MARCUS MILLER IN CONCERT:

Bass guitar legend Marcus Miller has lent his fast-fingered session skills to everyone from Miles Davis to Michael Jackson, but lately it's his solo work that's been bringing the heat. Taking the stage with an unparalleled group of jazz musicians, Miller holds down the groove for the duration of his marathon sets, soloing in turn with his bandmates at shows that often top two hours. Just to give you an idea of how committed these guys are, their encores often extend for up to 45 minutes — a perk fans can expect as the band hits the road for their 2014 tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brooklyn-born Marcus Miller was raised by a musical family that included his church organist father and jazz pianist cousin. By 13, he had mastered multiple instruments and begun penning his own tunes, becoming a sought-after session musician just a few years later. As a session player, he worked with a veritable laundry list of legendary artists, including Herbie Hancock, Mariah Carey, and Frank Sinatra, concurrently playing bass for Luther Vandross between 1981-2007. He formed his own band in the early '80s, making his solo debut with 1983's funk-inspired Suddenly and releasing a score of albums over the ensuing decades. Ever the multi-talent, Miller also acted as a producer on numerous Grammy-winning recordings for artists including Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, and Miles Davis. Back on the road in 2014, Miller and co. are sharper than ever, setting high expectations for their upcoming tour dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Funky and tight, Marcus' band tore through 2 sets that had everyone in the audience smilin', clappin', and rockin' in their seats."

"Marcus Miller and his band were awesome! The drummer, keyboardist, horn section, and guitar all were amazing. Loved the solos."

"Great show and a great band accompanying him. A three hour show, even the encore was 45 minutes. Not a disappointing minute from beginning to end."

  • Marcus....unbelievable as usuaual

    by Jazzam52 on 9/26/12Howard Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

For anyone who loves bass, this is one of the premier bassist alive today. Just as he had been brought up when he was young, he now brings a group of young guns into the fold and does not disapoint. Nasty bass. just nasty!!

  • Marcus Miller continues to deliver,jazz/world funk

by ivechi on 9/25/12B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Marcus Miller continues to impress with his jazz/funk fusion, technical brillance and a funky./jazz time for those from all walks of life. He reaches out to the past including mentioning Miles and playing his standard version of "So What", plays his jazz world fusion, bringing along fine young talent and making sure we know who these young lions are, with a closing nod to Michael Jackson playing as an encore "I'll Be There". Marcus is a joy, a charmer, a story teller, and brings people together. I enjoyed sharing the table at the B.B. King Supper Club with some fine, fine people, including a couple from Hartford. I was there from Amherst, MA, for the night. Then I went off to Small's on W. 10th - another super fine hot spot.

  • Marcus Miller and his band were fabulouse

by julualpo on 9/25/12B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent musical show with very talented musicians. Would see them again. The stage celling (roof) needs to be fixed as there was a large driping leak of water on the left side near where the keyboards and the trumpet and sax players were. Check it out!!!

  • Marcus Miller better than ever with new band

by mstclair on 9/25/12B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

great new songs, plus expert musicianship - especially Adam Agati (guitar) and Alex Han (sax) and incredible band tightness between bass + drums (Louis Cato). All of the band were great.

  • Marcus Miller is the best!

by Anonymous on 9/24/12B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

One of the best concerts that I have ever seen! Marcus Miller is always wonderful but he was even better last Saturday night at BB Kings! The lions share of the concert was devoted to music from his newest album, Renaissance . I have his entire catalog and I think this is his best work. And these new, young cats that he is playing with really rise to the occasion. They are exceptional players. All in all a great evening of music. We happened to be seated next to a couple from Rio who were experiencing Marcus' music for the first time. It was fun watching them enjoy it. They had never heard anything like it.

  • Its Miller Time.

Amazing show! First off BB Kings NYC is a great place to see a show. I sat on the sides and the sound was still near perfect. Marcus basically played songs from the new CD. Which is great. He did the new CD and show with all fresh players. Which he attributed to Miles and Tutu. Great solos and special guest Gretchen Parlato vocals on Septembro was fantastic. Great show. Go see Marcus Miller. All great songs start with the bass!

Marcus at the Howard Theatre was truly amazing. He rocked the house with his new album "Renaissance". It wasrefreshing and soothing jazz.. Marcus introduced his master skills in producing an atmosphere that ignites passion, thrills and romance all in one setting. Marcus took us down memory lane and back to that place called "MESMERIZED". I love watching Marcus entertain us while he's playing his instrument. Marcus is a 1st Class Performer who really knows how to connect with his audiences.

2-1/2 hour set with fresh new music and a couple oldies. Young band of lions surrounding their leader, on it!

  • Marcus Live!!!

by Sotherngirl on 9/21/12Howard Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I took my husband, a bass player, to this concert to continue his birthday celebration. The performance couldn't be more stellar. Marcus Miller is always at his best when he is live, interacting with the audience. I loved how he told the stories behind each of his songs; it gives the music more dimension. I can't wait until he comes back to town, we'll definitely go to see him again!

  • Superior!

by BlazinBryan on 9/21/12Howard Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Marcus Miller's show was top flight from top to bottom. Im a musician myself and had the night off so I decided to take my son to see this performance. My son is a drummer and he was very excited to see this. We were fortunate enough to be allowed backstage to meet Marcus and took pics. He gave my son all kinds of advice and was ultra down to earth. The show was spectacular and every musician he had on that stage was incredible. The Howard Theatre was very nice. Food was great, sound was superb, service was just fine. The only complaint I have is that there are no restrooms on the main floor. Also they made an announcement saying "no flash photography" very clearly. I assumed that meant that you can take pictures but you can't use a flash. Well I think everyone assumed the same thing and immediately began taking photos. A well dressed gentlemen quickly went around to everyone telling us "no pictures" and he was bombarded with responses explaining the "no flash photography" announcement. He didn't care and was quite rude about it in my opinion.

  • Marcus is the greatest bass player

Event was great and you could even shake his hand at the end of the concert, take a photo or get an autograph. Cool guy !

Terrific Marcus show in Buffalo NY. HIghlight had to be the extended uptempo version of "Blast" with solos throughout.
