MARCUS MILLER IN CONCERT:

Bass guitar legend Marcus Miller has lent his fast-fingered session skills to everyone from Miles Davis to Michael Jackson, but lately it's his solo work that's been bringing the heat. Taking the stage with an unparalleled group of jazz musicians, Miller holds down the groove for the duration of his marathon sets, soloing in turn with his bandmates at shows that often top two hours. Just to give you an idea of how committed these guys are, their encores often extend for up to 45 minutes — a perk fans can expect as the band hits the road for their 2014 tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brooklyn-born Marcus Miller was raised by a musical family that included his church organist father and jazz pianist cousin. By 13, he had mastered multiple instruments and begun penning his own tunes, becoming a sought-after session musician just a few years later. As a session player, he worked with a veritable laundry list of legendary artists, including Herbie Hancock, Mariah Carey, and Frank Sinatra, concurrently playing bass for Luther Vandross between 1981-2007. He formed his own band in the early '80s, making his solo debut with 1983's funk-inspired Suddenly and releasing a score of albums over the ensuing decades. Ever the multi-talent, Miller also acted as a producer on numerous Grammy-winning recordings for artists including Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, and Miles Davis. Back on the road in 2014, Miller and co. are sharper than ever, setting high expectations for their upcoming tour dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Funky and tight, Marcus' band tore through 2 sets that had everyone in the audience smilin', clappin', and rockin' in their seats."

"Marcus Miller and his band were awesome! The drummer, keyboardist, horn section, and guitar all were amazing. Loved the solos."

"Great show and a great band accompanying him. A three hour show, even the encore was 45 minutes. Not a disappointing minute from beginning to end."

cannot describe the outstanding performance of mm and his incredible band. his showmanship is one of being able to draw the audience into his music and make u feel as if he was in your living room just visiting with old friends. all the band members were also top notch musicians as expected. i was sorry the bass ? clarinet? didnt work for him but he was smoth enough to just go on bass and allow his sax man to take over for awhile.it worked great.

  • Marcus Miller At The Tralf: Buffalo, NY

    by DaddyJay69 on 9/17/12Tralf - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

This Marcus Miller band and tour are a little different from what we are used to. He put this specific band of younger players to mentor for a specific project revisiting the Miles Davis album "Tutu". He then wrote music specifically for this band to record and perform. This is Marcus' latest release "Renaissance". All of these musicians are outstanding talents and shine on their own, but when placed together in a band led by veteran talent Marcus Miller they gel into one very cohesive unit. The music is outstanding and performed flawlessly. As for the location- it is one of the greatest venues to see a show like this. The Tralf is a small venue that holds only several hundred people. The sound is amazing and there is not a bad spot for viewing.

Marcus is without a doubt one of the best musicians in the entertainment field. His mastery of the bass is comparable to the late Wayman Tisdale. Mr. Miller make the bass talk in a rythm that the most boring of listeners would have to sit up and take heed. If you miss this concert you missed one of the best yet presented at the Tralf.

  • Best concert ever!!!!!

I had such a great time at this concert and I'm so glad that I went. Marcus Miller is a great bassist. He is a true professional and you can tell that everyone in the audience had a great time. He definitely deserved the standing ovation that he got.

  • Phenomonal

by Shagagunga on 9/17/12Jazz Cafe At Music Hall - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Marcus (and his entire band) was on fire from the start. Every song was amazing, every musician was hot, every solo was smokin'. It's so fun to watch musicianship of this caliber. A true joy to watch and listen. And to take the time to do meet and greets after both shows exhibits a lot of class. I can't wait until he comes back again.

  • The Bass Maestro!

by DetroitMusic on 9/17/12Jazz Cafe At Music Hall - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

There are a lot of major players in the "bass game"--Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Bootsy Collins, Verdine White, Larry Graham. Marcus is definitely to be counted among that elite crowd. The show was very well executed--the musicianship of all the players was extremely high. Marcus mainly showcased the music from his new CD "Renaissance", another phenomenal entry in his discography. The show was high energy and the venue was a great place to have an intimate concert.

  • Marcus Miller--Magnificent

by kbsdancer on 9/16/12Jazz Cafe At Music Hall - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Marcus was funky, smooth, cool, humble, knowledgeable, approachable. He had the small intimate venue rocking and folks on their feet. I appreciate that Marcus loves to share with us WHY he wrote the songs, WHAT he felt when he wrote it. And his young band was awesome. He is mentoring...always. If you have never seen Marcus, go see him. A CD is great but you gotta SEE him feel the music.

  • Awesome & Awesome & Relaxing Feeling

    by HazelEyes01 on 7/19/12Hollywood Bowl - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

This Concert was so Awarding to Miles Davis of whom I think was proud upon looking in from Heaven and seeing so many paying such a tribute and honor to him as a musician considering the fact that Miles mentored and left so many to carry on in his absence. I enjoyed this Concert immensely and Marcus Miller was amazing with ALL the instruments that he so proficient with operating. I really like him and he's goo---ooood looking.

Opening the show was Jimmy Cobb's So What Band playing Kind Of Blue in its entirety.By far this was the highlight of the show.Hearing these incredible musicians play this American classic under the stars was unforgettable. Next up was the Miles electric band. Led by Miles' nephew and fronted by the great Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Miles' groundbreaking work fom Bitches Brew was featured. Finally Marcus Miller tested the Bowl's infamous volume restrictions with a thundering set highlighted by Tutu.

  • Celebrating the Genius of Miles

by JforJazz on 7/2/12Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome! Would have loved to see Herbie Hancock join one of the groups for at least one number. He was great as MC but what a tease just having him present. Love the camaraderie of fellow concert-goers. Everyone chatting about the show, sharing food and wine. Simply outstanding.
