MARCUS MILLER IN CONCERT:

Bass guitar legend Marcus Miller has lent his fast-fingered session skills to everyone from Miles Davis to Michael Jackson, but lately it's his solo work that's been bringing the heat. Taking the stage with an unparalleled group of jazz musicians, Miller holds down the groove for the duration of his marathon sets, soloing in turn with his bandmates at shows that often top two hours. Just to give you an idea of how committed these guys are, their encores often extend for up to 45 minutes — a perk fans can expect as the band hits the road for their 2014 tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brooklyn-born Marcus Miller was raised by a musical family that included his church organist father and jazz pianist cousin. By 13, he had mastered multiple instruments and begun penning his own tunes, becoming a sought-after session musician just a few years later. As a session player, he worked with a veritable laundry list of legendary artists, including Herbie Hancock, Mariah Carey, and Frank Sinatra, concurrently playing bass for Luther Vandross between 1981-2007. He formed his own band in the early '80s, making his solo debut with 1983's funk-inspired Suddenly and releasing a score of albums over the ensuing decades. Ever the multi-talent, Miller also acted as a producer on numerous Grammy-winning recordings for artists including Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, and Miles Davis. Back on the road in 2014, Miller and co. are sharper than ever, setting high expectations for their upcoming tour dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Funky and tight, Marcus' band tore through 2 sets that had everyone in the audience smilin', clappin', and rockin' in their seats."

"Marcus Miller and his band were awesome! The drummer, keyboardist, horn section, and guitar all were amazing. Loved the solos."

"Great show and a great band accompanying him. A three hour show, even the encore was 45 minutes. Not a disappointing minute from beginning to end."

Great show and a great band accompanying him. A three hour show, even the encore was 45 minutes. Not a disappointing minute from beginning to end. Played mostly from his new album, but did a nice version of Tutu towards the end.

by Groov on 10/2/12Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Marcus Miller and his band put on one of the greatest live shows I've seen in a very long time. Great musicianship and he connected with the crowd from start to finish. His encore performance was 30 minutes long. Who does that???? I would see Marcus perform again and again. The venue was great and the sound was on point.

  • Marcus Miller and band were Incredible!!!

by Ailex on 10/2/12Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

From the start, Christian Scott and his trio were great. I thought it honorable for Christian to keep referring to Marcus as the Great Maestro. When Marcus came on, he came out with a bang and from start to finish we grooved to the sounds and talent this guy displays so effortlessly. Can't wait to see him again! He was awesome!

This was my fourth time seeing Marcus and I am now an even bigger fan. I think it is wonderful that Marcus is now touring with younger musicians that he can mentor. The entire band was top notch. This is truly a must see show!

  • would have been amazing!

by LincolnHigh on 10/1/12Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

The music was excellent! What kept this from being rated higher (amazing) was the tardiness of each group's entry on stage. There's no excuse for the amount of time the group kept the audience waiting for each performance!

  • This show was sensational!

    by Prettyblack1 on 10/1/12Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

As fellow musicians, we understood the delay in the start of the performance, as it seemed there was a slight problem with the sound system. This theatre has an empecable reputation and we knew everything would be correct before the artists would be allowed to step on stage! Once the concert began, it was awesome!. As the Durham audience embraced Mr. Miller and his accompanying musicians, the theatre "rocked" from beginning to the end as evidenced by the clapping, the numerous standing ovations, the bobbing of heads and rocking of bodies. Young, gifted and highly favored-the gentlemen performed amazingly!. Thus the title of Mr. Miller's new CD, Renaissance, spoke for itself. So happy that we were able to make the trip to hear this performance from this talented group. Can hardly wait for his next visit to the Bull City!!!!

  • Great show!!!

I was wonderfully surprised! I didn't expect so much from a bass player. Marcus exceeded what I could ever imagine!

  • good show

    by Steve9000 on 10/1/12Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

Marcus is the agile and athletic virtuoso he's been since I first saw him with Miles in '82. Amazing vocabulary of sounds and techniques: mellow and kind of pseudo-upright when stroking with his thumb; then there's his aggressive Jazz Bass fingerstyle sound; and of course his trademark slapping and popping. He himself was notey and loud, but what the hell: it's his band and we came to see *him*. At one point he did a fine testimonial to Bernie Worrell's classic synth bass line from "Flashlight." Very definitely in the pocket all night, and he moves well, too. He comes off as firm and watchful but amiable with his young band. Fine drummer; exceptional keyboardist whose lyrical acoustic piano owes a lot to Herbie Hancock, but he played some muscular and precise "organ" and other electronic keys as well, where Herbie's influence was not so audible. Guitarist looked a little like the singer in Radiohead (maybe it was the haircut): I wasn't overwhelmed. Good trumpet player. The alto player at first sounded like Maceo, but as the show progressed he revealed a much broader range in addition to that fine foundation: very strong. Lots of nice two-horn unison lines that reflected the Miles mid-sixties quintet sound along with the piano, but over a mostly harder funk backbeat (with twists).

  • Marcus Continues to Smash It

by Bassbygrace on 9/30/12Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Marcus never fails to deliver. This is my second concert of his, and my second concert at the Carolina Theater this yr. I think that the venue is perfect for artist's like him. The concert was awesome! They had a few sound issues at first, but it worked out. I like the variations they incorporated into many of the tunes, including the encore jam of "Blast". Alex Hann and Louis Cato were my favs for the night. That groove was LOCKED, and Alex's solos were just musical bliss. I thoroughly enjoyed it. He and the band were very congenial after the performance, which was icing on the cake.

  • Marcus Miller Renaissance was Awesome!

by GSutton on 9/30/12Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Marcus Miller and Christian Scott were Phenomenal!!!! The entire concert was superb. Christian Scott and his band opened the show, right from the first note I was captivated . I'm a Jazz fan, love the late Miles Davis, there will never be another Miles but never fear there is a new kid on the block, Christian Scott ! Man can that dude blow! And Marcus, wow, wow, just wow, his Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde , you had to be there. The man is a guitar genius! I loved every moment of the entire concert, every band member and props to The Carolina Theatre for bringing such great jazz musicians to North Carolina.
